(Apols if there’s a thread already, I couldn’t see one)

Billy Porter wore a gown to the Oscars and I am LOVING his rationale as described in the Vogue article. Challenging gender stereotypes all the way. “I’m a man in a dress.” Bloody brilliant.

uatu

Thats the pictures!!!!! I dont like the shirt...do love the necklace look

UatuTheWatcher · 26/02/2019 12:49

Aw! Shit! My apologies both.

You are right mrsbertbibby. DH and I were having a conversation the other day about the actors that could play Panther and we both favoured Chiwetal and was getting myself muddled up, so sorry. He actually played Mordo in Dr Strange so obviously couldn’t play the Black Panther. Sorry to confuse everyone.

IDoN0tCare · 26/02/2019 12:32

Chiwetel Ejiofur isn't Black Panther! That's Chadwick Boseman!

Oh FFS! I could count on one hand the number of actors names I know, don’t confuse me any more. 😁

MrsBertBibby · 26/02/2019 12:26

Chiwetel Ejiofur isn't Black Panther! That's Chadwick Boseman!

IDoN0tCare · 26/02/2019 12:05

Ahh that makes sense, UatuTheWatcher I kept comparing photos and thinking how completely different he looked in the film. I’m crapnwuth faces, I mean really really crap, as in I could meet you a couple of times but still wouldn’t recognise you in the street. Very embarrassing. I could see the difference, but kept thinking it was my facial blindness. 🤣

UatuTheWatcher · 26/02/2019 12:03

Sorry the only pictures I can find of him after the Oscars without the tuxedo bit were in the Daily Fail. It gives the dress a completely different vibe.

I adore Glenn Closes reaction when she spots her friend Grin

UatuTheWatcher · 26/02/2019 11:53

IDoN0tCare, Billy Porter was in the stage musical of Kinky Boots not the film. The guy in the film is Chiwetel Ejiofor the gentleman who plays the Black Panther in the Marvel films.

Floisme · 26/02/2019 10:31

Pink I'm responsible for calling you out. It was a complete accident - I was genuinely wondering aloud where you were - but I then compounded it by making it into a joke. It was really stupid of me and potentially reckless too. Believe it or not, I'm normally pretty careful what I say on here. Many apologies.

JudgeRulesNutterButter · 26/02/2019 10:25

For me, it’s because it’s rare in this current climate to find people who “smash the gender binary” in a way that I’d recognise as gender critical

Agreed

Just read that Olivia Colman's gown had pockets...

The two questions with clothing are, I think, whether the socially acceptable choices are constrained according to your sex, and whether what is acceptable and available in female sizes and fitttings is as functional.

On a catwalk, high heels (provided you can walk in them) and a frock may be more 'functional' than a bland tux.

On a day out with small kids, a full skirt may be as functional as trousers, but footwear choices may determine whether the child can fully participate in all activities.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/02/2019 09:16

Hot pink highlights, and blackout curtains, Rufus.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 26/02/2019 08:25

I did worry that it was hot pink Grin

She doesnt sleep well at the best of times she'll need a sleep mask!

glitterbiscuits · 26/02/2019 08:22

The concept reminds me of early stage Eddie Izzard when he used to bang on about "total clothing rights"

PreseaCombatir · 26/02/2019 08:21

Rufus
No, I get you,
it’s not by any means rampant, but I do think there’s an element.
As I be said, I’ve noticed people being picked up on it a lot more now!

Re the pink, hmmm
Dd says she has ‘two favourite colours’, pink and hot pink. So maybe the hot pink is the woman pink. You’ll need sunglasses in there 😂

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 26/02/2019 08:16

morris

The shirt is a false front

I preferred the bare look with a necklace but I can't find a picture

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 26/02/2019 08:15

presea

I dont think there would be one single person who says that hasn't happened

I took offence to (probably my interpretation) that everyone on the FWR board slags off women in dresses

And ive seen many comments on other boards on mumsnet that are attributed to feminists when the poster concerned has said whether they are or not...or has actually said they aren't

Anyhoo

Dd wore her snow white dress out all the time when she was 2/3, couldn't get her out of it at one point...people still say they remember it Grin

She wants her bedroom redoing but doesnt want baby pink, she wants woman pink. I really must try and work out what she means

MorrisZapp · 26/02/2019 08:11

Amy looks slick, effortless and comfortable. Good job Amy.

MorrisZapp · 26/02/2019 08:10

Never heard of this bloke but blimey that's a strong look. Huge kudos to the designer too.

Buuuuuut

Is it just me who can't help wondering what's under there? I know what women look like under dresses. Does this guy have shirt tails tucked into y fronts? I have a mental picture :)

ImFineThankYouSusan · 26/02/2019 08:07

Much preferred Amy Poehler's outfit. I think she looked stunning.

Hell yes Billy Porter
EweSurname · 26/02/2019 08:03

Why should we give a shit what a man wears to the Oscars?

For me, it’s because it’s rare in this current climate to find people who “smash the gender binary” in a way that I’d recognise as gender critical: wear what you want, play with what you want, have interests and mannerisms of your choosing but recognise that you can’t change your sex.

When people like Eddie izzard who used to be gender non conforming are now coming out as trans, it’s refreshing to see people refuse to stick to roles/uniforms that society proscribes without claiming this makes them a member of the opposite sex.

I think this helps with an acceptance of rejecting gender, which is what helps oppress a lot of women, and why I think it’s being hailed as a positive on a feminist board.

PreseaCombatir · 26/02/2019 07:53

I’ve definitely seen little girls being sneered at on here for ‘performing femininity’.
Tends to be along the lines of ‘I’ve taught my dd to be into climbing trees and loving dinosaurs and rockets, not that pink shit’.
I notice it because I have a dd who LOVES ‘that pink shit’, and it’s nice to see them getting their arses handed to them, pink & sparkly, and traditional ‘girls’ hobbies and not inherently ‘inferior’, and my dad is not somehow lesser than a tomboy.
I will say though that it gets picked up on a lot more now than it used to, which is refreshing.

Anyway, back to the thread, good on him.
It’s so nice to see a man embrace ‘femininity’ without thinking it makes him a woman. I agree with the comment there’ll will be hoards who think he’s secretly trans with ‘internalised transphobia’.

Lamaha · 26/02/2019 06:08

I guess I am too old (67) to be really impressed by so-called "radical" statements by anyone, including breaking gender norms. It always seems to juvenile to me; like the extreme rebellion I had when I was 18. Since getting past that I've never cared about gender norms or stereotypes or breaking them or not. I was a stay at home mother. So what. I don't wear make up or high heels. So what.

Limpshade · 26/02/2019 03:42

Has anyone on here who's ever worn a dress in public been accused of "performing femininity" while wearing said dress? Genuinely asking as I really struggle believe that anything like that happens in real life and is the kind of crap that keeps me away from Twitter and the Feminism board

InionEile · 26/02/2019 03:38

I noticed quite a few women in suits and men in skirt-like clothes - a full on ball gown in Billy Porter’s case - at this year’s Oscars and, hell yes, I’m here for it, as the young folk say on Twitter.

Wish we could go back to the good old days of gender bending and radical clothing instead of this current trans mindset of ‘male-bodied person in dress = transwoman’, pronoun-policing nonsense.

SignMeUp · 26/02/2019 03:27

My reaction is rather "so what?"

But can someone explain this to me:

Putting on those heels made me feel the most masculine I’ve ever felt in my life.
