I cannot get my head around this at all, a bookshop should be the last place to find censorship

They will go bust - and that the first time I think I’ve ever said that about a bookshop with a smirk.

littlbrowndog · 17/02/2019 10:32

Omg they support that sisters uncut crew
Says it all
And they curate speaking events in case somebody says something hurty
Jeez
Wonder who is funding them
And the word curate. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

littlbrowndog · 17/02/2019 10:29

Yeps idiots an£ very privileged people
Where is the book shop?
Most shop owners stock what people want to read and what sells

They are shop keepers nowt more

RunningWild12 · 17/02/2019 10:21

They issued a proclamation against Women’s Place Uk during the radical book fair they organise. Calling the organisation the usual names. I think (need to check) they were against Trotskyists and communists coming along too. So god only knows what books they stock. Avowedly feminist? I
So many over privileged young people in Edinburgh... Really, I have to work alongside those in community development work and arts workers. In the main over confident and arrogant and have swallowed post modernist trans ideology hook line and sinker. One of them told a friend, at work, that her thinking was old fashioned and believing there were just 2 sexes was like being racist. They are fools.
Mind you, they are not saying anything different to our political representatives. Nicola Sturgeon thinks our concerns around self id are misplaced.
Thank god for all the women now meeting in real life to organise against this pernicious ideology.

Or maybe they have a copy of 1984?

Doublethink

The keyword here is blackwhite. Like so many Newspeak words, this word has two mutually contradictory meanings. Applied to an opponent, it means the habit of impudently claiming that black is white, in contradiction of the plain facts. Applied to a Party member, it means a loyal willingness to say that black is white when Party discipline demands this. But it means also the ability to believe that black is white, and more, to know that black is white, and to forget that one has ever believed the contrary. This demands a continuous alteration of the past, made possible by the system of thought which really embraces all the rest, and which is known in Newspeak as doublethink. Doublethink is basically the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.

I’m rather looking forward to my next trip up north. I quite like engaging verbally with idiots. It’s fun to see them flustering, blistering and getting all hurty.

Horsewithnom · 17/02/2019 09:58

So as a woman who is a feminist who knows full well that men can't actually become women I am unwelcome at their shop.

It is so ridiculous, obviously I bear no ill-will towards transgender people, but a transwoman is not the same as a woman.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 17/02/2019 09:55

we recognise myriad vectors of oppression exist in our society, based on race, gender, sexuality, class, physical ability and neurological divergence….and that they are interrelated.

So the ‘explicitly feminist bookshop’ doesnt recognise sex as a basis for oppression? Did a man write that?

feministfairy · 17/02/2019 09:51

It is not “shutting down the debate” if we refuse to discuss, for example, whether trans women are women; to hold such a debate would itself be immoral

Grin They haven't read many books have they?

They might do well to ponder on Benjamin Franklin's words:
whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freeness of speech

Horsewithnom · 17/02/2019 09:44

So will they remove ALL of Germane Greer's books from the shelves?

Juells · 17/02/2019 09:43

an intersectional and inclusive radical bookshop

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

It is not “shutting down the debate” if we refuse to discuss, for example, whether trans women are women; to hold such a debate would itself be immoral.

Transwomen are transwomen, and are entitled to be transwomen and have all their human rights, just like the rest of us.

Yes Gods! Such flummery.
