Transgender man becomes pregnant after IVF wants baby to be declared motherless on Birth certificate

This is also covered in the Telegraph but I cannot access their article.
We have a similiar case in NZ, and I've put the links below. Scout had a baby girl just before Christmas. I am glad that everything went well for Scout and their daughter, but the denial of biological reality by Scout (especially in the Spinoff article) and the transgender parent in the Mail article is really sad. The media in NZ hasn't helped either by its decision to report Scout's story on Scout's own terms. In real life Dads don't get pregnant and have babies, at least human ones don't.
Other transgender parents in the UK have recorded themselves as the mother apparently, so it will be interesting to see where this goes.

That poor child.

Illyria47 · 13/02/2019 19:06

Finally read the article in Spinoff about Scout. Words fail me.
Biological females give birth not men. Being a parent, ie mother or father figure is quite different, I am not a mother(biologically speaking) but could mother a child.
We're living in an alternate universe here and it makes one's head spin, one just has to keep repeating the facts, using logic over and over again. Channel Mr Spock!

NothingOnTellyAgain · 13/02/2019 12:30

Was typing earlier but had meeting

What I was trying to say badly was this

'If you argue that men can get pregnant and give birth and that vaginas can be male, then by the same logic, why can't mothers be male?'

Mother means person/ animal that grows and births a baby.
It has been extended in some circs to others but this is what it means.
It's not' gendered ' at heart, by definition, although of course it gets a load of gender expectations on it.

But it means growing and having a baby.

Yes by the logic it should mean that men can be described as mothers

But I don't think that will end up anywhere good for us or for children either

What of mens language is being eroded in this way?

BorneBackCeaselesslyIntoThePas · 13/02/2019 10:41

As I understand it, children born from artificial insemination or adopted children have the right (where practical) to find their father/parents. This is done in the interests of child welfare, but here we have a case bought in the interests of the parent! What next, banning Mother’s Day because it’s triggering, maternity wear modelled by Brian Blessed?

(On an unrelated note I’m thinking of crowd funding a colony of Mars with entrance restricted to those that answer

“And finally we just need to confirm your gender”

With

‘Sure, where do I get undressed”

Extra points awarded for thinking ‘optics’ are the things you find over a bar and ‘woke’ is what happened to Sleeping Beauty

UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, Articles 3 and 7.

Someone needs to tell them "This. Is. Not. About. You"

Telegraph link

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/02/12/transgender-mans-fight-child-motherless-opposed-government/

This is all kinds of wrong.

There has been a crazy shift in the culture since I was young. Everything is about rights - what happened to responsibilities? The responsibility to the child this person chose to bring into the world?

FeedMeBooks · 13/02/2019 09:38

So cruel to the child. Not every child has a mother currently present in their life but they have a mother as part of their dna, their life story (not always happy) but this child would have no mother.

The biological mother is trying to erase the child's primary relationship. Such a self-centred move.

That's it exactly. My head is completely bent out of shape by the logic of this one. Undermining their own argument!

StrangeLookingParasite · 13/02/2019 09:29

article, not articlae

Also, link

StrangeLookingParasite · 13/02/2019 09:29

This person also wrote an articlae about how offended they are by the expression 'barking mad' because they suffer from acute mental illness; psychosis.

reallybadidea · 13/02/2019 09:24

If you argue that men can get pregnant and give birth and that vaginas can be male, then by the same logic, why can't mothers be male? On the one hand this individual is arguing against pregnancy as being gendered, but for some reason doesn't want to say that mothers can be male or female, which would be consistent with their logic.

Which is the whole point really, it isn't that this is a principled stance based on logic and reason, it's about wanting society to bend to your beliefs whatever they are, even if they're illogical.

Putitdownnow · 13/02/2019 09:12

They gave birth because they are a woman. Women give birth, not men.
Women are mothers when they give birth.

It ain't difficult

ForgivenessIsDivine · 13/02/2019 08:47

Then the birth certificate could have parent one and parent 2 (optional).

ForgivenessIsDivine · 13/02/2019 08:46

Quote: 'Pregnancy is understandably but frustratingly gendered.* Talk about needing to have the system flag show Scout as female in order to access maternity services... geez. .

Surely we can come to a sensible conclusion and have sex and gender options on all forms / systems: female 'dudes' (their word) and male 'dudes' and female 'chicks' and male 'chicks' with the gender field being optional.

I would identify as a female gender neutral, Scout could identify as a female dude.

happydappy2 · 13/02/2019 08:46

I really hope the courts rule in the interests of the child. Legal documents should never support a fiction. If the parent is not honest, how are they going to explain to the child where they came from? Will the child be expected to believe their Mother abandoned them? This has huge implications for the child.I don’t understand why some trans people feel the need to obliterate the facts of their past.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 13/02/2019 08:41

It is also a further destruction of words bringing to women.

Mother means someone who grows and births a baby.

The situation with surrogacy where the woman is seen as nothing whatsoever to do with the baby she grows inside her, because genetics (an extremely male view) and this situation where the child will be told, and potentially legally, that they have no mother is unprecedented. Who is looking out for the interests of the child here?

NothingOnTellyAgain · 13/02/2019 08:38

It's a fact of life that all babies, all mammal babies, have a mother.
To say that now we have babies that have no mother, it's a very basic lie.

It feeds into a lot of current news that can only go badly for women.
The framing of surrogates as gestational carriers has a similar feel.

Then we have this thing about trying to get men to 'chestfeed' by taking lots of hormones.

The only thing we have that men could never take, and that drove them mad, was the fact that we are the ones who get pregnant, give birth.

The role of a father is not exactly the same and that is fine.

If and when men can obfuscate and claim that pregnancy and birth are not a wholly female matter, we will face some major issues, and I do not think things will go in our favour.

OldBrownShoe · 13/02/2019 08:31

I struggle to understand this. My uncle is a transsexual (female to Male, had full surgery in the mid 90s) and is disgusted by/absolutely rejects every female part of himself. He won’t even tolerate old photos or memories of when he was female.

For someone to feel so uncomfortable in their female biological sex, then do the one thing that is the most female thing anyone could ever do by gestating and birthing a child, surely that’s one mixed up person who has no real reason to claim gender dysphoria.

andyoldlabour · 13/02/2019 08:30

"What about the babies right to a relationship with it’s mother?"

Trans "human rights" always trump those of mere mortals dontcha know.

andyoldlabour · 13/02/2019 08:29

"Ok I'm confused. If they believe themselves to be a man then why would they want to use their "wrong parts" to create a child?"

Yes, the ultimate act of misgendering oneself Grin

nevernotstruggling · 13/02/2019 08:25

The mother is using the birth certificate as a validation prop for themselves. That’s not Ok.

Exactly this

Floisme · 13/02/2019 08:25

Bowl on the money as usual. Whose birth certificate is it - the child's or the parent's?

Melanippe · 13/02/2019 08:24

The response to this will be dictated by whether one believes that a birth certificate is there to validate the feelings of the adults involved or to accurately document the birth of a baby. If the former, then this will be all super, smashing and great, if the latter, then it will be utterly ridiculous. I am of the latter persuasion.

Fazackerley · 13/02/2019 08:23

The child will need to educate itself.
