"Because once the medical community accept this as a treatment for cis-women with uterine infertility, such as congenital absence of a womb, then it would be illegal to deny a trans-female who has completed her transition.

"The most important step is the harvesting from the donor as great care is required to avoid damage to the arteries and veins supplying the uterus.
Trans females have a much narrower pelvis than cis-women of the same height, but there would still be room for them to carry a child.

“Supplemental hormones could be taken to replicate the changes that occur in the body when a woman is pregnant.

And what happens in case of miscarriage.

Usually the foetus is expelled . Women get 2 scandal unless complications arise

Are they going to scan weekly the entire time and hope they don't bleed out into the uterus on the mean time ?

PutYourShirtOnMartin · 08/02/2019 23:03

You know what? Yes.. do it..let's let 'trans women' have the babies. They can gestate them for nine months...experience all the shit we deal with..weight gain, high BP, discrimination at work, tooth loss, stretch marks. And then all the crap after...being berated for saying at home/ having a job. Not promoted because 'they will only go on - well is it going to be called maternity leave?'

And the nappies...sleepless nights...

Yes... let them have the whole fucking experience. Including pushing the baby out..no c sections on request...they want the whole experience...incontinence and piles can be added for good measure

Deadringer · 08/02/2019 23:02

But wait, what? Aside from the vital hormones (including the ones that stop the fetus being rejected by the mother's body) what about all the stuff the uterus is hooked up to, how would the blood supply feed and grow the baby, it doesn't make any sense. The uterus isn't some sort of grow bag. Who will donate the uterus and the eggs? And what is the point anyway, even if the impossible could be made possible?

HumberElla · 08/02/2019 23:01

But but but! All this talk of biology and details. Don’t you know there are human rights (male demands) at stake here?!

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 08/02/2019 23:01

I've got a bit in my will specifying that only a biological woman can have my uterus.

OvaHere · 08/02/2019 22:59

Oh FFS not this again.

Medicine still doesn't fully understand all the complex interactions between mother and foetus during gestation never mind trying to bung a womb in an empty male cavity.

I suspect this cosmetic gender surgeon is just trying to raise their profile.

GerryblewuptheER · 08/02/2019 22:58

And didn't it kill the last Male bodied person who tried this ?

GerryblewuptheER · 08/02/2019 22:57

How?

Women have a hard enough time getting correct treatment for gynae issues as it is. Now they have to get in line behind makes who seek validation through a uterus transplant?

How is this ethical. The drugs needed to maintain a pregnancy in a body nit designed to host it can't be safe surely ?

I'm on the donor list I want my uterus to go to a natal woman. Can we opt out of donating our uterus without opting out of organ donation?

RJnomore1 · 08/02/2019 22:56

Jolly good luck to anyone thinking they can reproduce female hormone system. In fact they can have both my fucking wombs if they can prove to me they can.

Unbelievable

failingatlife · 08/02/2019 22:54

Transwomen aren’t missing any organs. Some of them just think they should be able to demand the ones they don’t have. Sorry, no.

Exactly this!

Glad to see the comments BTL also against this!

Redshoeblueshoe · 08/02/2019 22:53

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
I only got as far as O level biology ( which shows I'm old)
What a load of fucking bollocks

SemperIdem · 08/02/2019 22:53

I don’t think womb transplants should be a right for anyone, woman or trans woman.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 08/02/2019 22:51

My thoughts are along the same lines as Bittermints I'm struggling to believe this guy is a surgeon.

It's all very well carefully preserving the blood vessels from the donor/cadaver, but what would they be attached to?

Then there are the minor details like hormones and the fetal blood supply to overcome.

Yeah totally realistic.

Bittermints · 08/02/2019 22:43

Comments on the Mirror site 100% against it, btw.

MostlyBoastly · 08/02/2019 22:43

And what of the effect on the baby? The drugs, the procedures, the artificial environment. Oh I forgot. No one actually gives a shit about that. As long as a man can do the all-powerful and bring a baby into the world. Not happening.

Fallingirl · 08/02/2019 22:42

Potentially a nice little earner for surgeons in countries where all medical treatment is privatized.

I wonder if that might influence their opinions on whether it might succeed at all...

PerverseConverse · 08/02/2019 22:42

Well that's redirected my brexit anger. I'm stunned at the doctors who deny biological reality in order to be woke and line their own pockets. There are no words strong enough to describe them.

AuntieOxident · 08/02/2019 22:41

So — a womb is transplanted into a biological male, then a fertilised embryo, but how would the placenta be formed and grow? Surely it takes more than just a boosted blood supply?

The person would also have to take huge amounts of drugs to make sure the transplant was not rejected, alongside ++++pregnancy hormones.
So how likely is it that the embryo would develop normally, much less survive the pregnancy?

The ethical questions alone would be a nightmare.

Would women be deterred from carrying a donor card if their wombs were likely to be harvested for this purpose?

Bittermints · 08/02/2019 22:40

Mr Inglefield, a specialist in gender confirmation surgery as well as facial and body feminisation So he's a cosmetic surgeon, not a gynaecologist/obstetrician, not an endocrinologist, not a paediatrician. Clearly also not one to waste time pondering medical ethics, either.

Surely the NHS, which is struggling to do essential stuff, will never be expected to pay for 10-hour operations for trans women?

I also worry greatly about the pressure on young trans men to have hysterectomies, as there's already a research article that blithely talks about these young people as potential donors for trans women.

Alondonleerie · 08/02/2019 22:40

There's always some arrogant weirdo wanting to push boundaries, make a ton of money, or make a name for themselves. Just look at the cosmetic surgeons who keep on working on ppl who have irreversibly ruined their bodies already.

Is it possible to specify how you want your organs to be used (or not) in that much detail? If so, how? Because I'd also want my womb to go to a natural born female as a priority, who surely deserves it more than someone has mutilated their own body.

HumberElla · 08/02/2019 22:37

Yes that kind of implant should be absolutely fine. Because humans are just like Lego really. That’s all surgery is after all.
No womb? Click. No problem!

MostlyBoastly · 08/02/2019 22:37

Given the myriad of difficulties inherent in fertility for biological women, I can’t help but raise an eyebrow here. The whole endocrine system of a male is completely at odds with the survival of a functional womb. I don’t think it’s fascist to discuss this. Is it really a human right to be supplied with a part of a women’s body? Honestly if I had to pick a physical metaphor to represent male entitlement, it’s like a bloody Tate exhibit.

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 08/02/2019 22:35
GurlwiththeCurl · 08/02/2019 22:35

Women’s uteruses are not simply “plug and play”, ffs. There are complicated hormonal changes that take place during pregnancy. I am not sure whether medicine has advanced enough to be able to replicate the amazing things that women’s bodies do during conception and pregnancy.

And all of this is ignoring the huge ethical issues around experimenting in this way on foetuses!

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 08/02/2019 22:34

carrying a child is more complicated than just having an organ to stick it in

yes

the main point here is not can we do this, but why would we do this?

the first baby gestated in a man's body would have a high chance of dying in utero as they'd basically be an experiment

why is the right of a man to gestate a baby more important than the safety of the baby he wants to gestate?
