women at Girton College Cambridge aren’t allowed 1 hour out of 83 hours to swim in a female only environment

I’ve just read this. Apparently they wanted 1 measly hour for women to swim, without men.
1 hour. The rest of the time, the pool is available for men and women. This is Girton college, a women’s only college, Cambridge.

A man was outside protesting apparently. Angry

feminism should be about having some balls really? I thought feminism was about the fact that we do not and therefore have different needs and experiences.
I’m so glad that lucydo is here to tell us that we’re doing feminism wrong and that women’s very real fears should not be catered to for one hour a week.

Caucho · 07/02/2019 21:28

It is a pretty measly demand agreed. Surely they could have sensibly asked for one hour and proposed the men had one too. If it’s no inconvenience then surely the opposite remains as true? Anyway like people have said many women aren’t happy with it anyway as it includes men who identify as female one hour of the week may by sure luck happens to be that exact hour in the entire week when the women only policy is in place).

But non binary women are unlikely to attend
Men who fancy going to it, for whatever reason, much more so.

Well sure-

Pp suggested maybe they were thinking their women and non binary meant female

Jess Bradley (NUS trans officer) identifies as a non-binary transwoman.

Jess Bradley was suspended from NUS post following allegations that she had taken pictures of her penis in public places including (I believe) her place of work and had published these.

R0wantrees · 06/02/2019 21:05

There are male people who identify as non-binary though.
Presumably they would have been able to attend.

Maybe the point of the poster protest is that by saying non-binary and women, this makes the session mixed sex?

Males can opt out of the category 'men' by being transgender and / or non-binary.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 06/02/2019 20:26

But why would you want to go to a women only session if you are wanting distance from your sex?

Unlike prison and so forth - and I'm not agreeing with lucydo here Grin - swimming is a lower risk activity and mixed sex is the usual.

Anyway TBF none of it makes logical sense.

I have had a couple of chats with DD recently as she's started going to school independently. Including one triggered by an incident at a nearby school with a man following a girl.

i can't imagine many parents have chats with their 11yo sons about this specific risk?

Growing up female is v tricky, I'm sure boyhood is too, periods + the way men start to look at you (and poss more) as soon as your boobs start to grow is for a lot of girls really distressing. Who wouldn't want to ID out of that change from a child and no-one really looks your way to sex object in the eyes of way too many men?

Anyway we've been over this a million times.

My DD "ids" as non binary on things she's on, I don't blame her TBH. if I was her age now I'd be the same.

R0wantrees · 06/02/2019 18:31

I'd be fairly sure the girton 'women and non-binary' with ''Men, please be respectful and do not come in' was aimed merely at being inclusive of females including those who are going through a phase of not wanting to be called women, and they'd not thought it through very well.

It may have been avoided by simply stating this is a single sex swim session for females.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/02/2019 15:32

We could probably quench enthusiasm for identifying as non binary gender if all gc feminists did so... because, heck, we know that the idea of gender being binary is silly.

'Yes, dear, of course you're non-binary, so am I, and your dad, and your aunties and uncles'HmmGrin

R0wantrees · 06/02/2019 13:32

as far as I have been able to tell from the younger gendercrown, non binary means "young and thin with a sort of androgynous haircut".

There are older, less thin people with a range of hairstyles also identifying as non-binary.

Its entirely nebulous.

R0wantrees · 06/02/2019 13:30

In terms of politically influential people Edward Lord & Gregor Murray (who are both male) identify as non-binary.

Its a requirement in many places including here that Lord and Murray's compelled preferred pronouns they/their/them are used.

Edward Lord (of City of London, masons, partner of Meg-John Barker etc etc) is an honorary life member of the NUS...! Wonder what influence he still has over them... hmm

(All these lines lead to each other and big tangled mess, don't they?)"

Oldermum156 · 06/02/2019 13:15

I know a "non-binary" from a message board I am on. Very obviously male, very angry communist dude, always talking about killing and murder.

R0wantrees · 05/02/2019 20:20

I went to (what I thought) was single sex swimming sessions. It was a deliberate decision after some significant surgery and chemotherapy for gyny cancer. I needed to start the recovery process both physical and self esteem / sense of self. I found it easier to conteplate being in a swimming costume and also vulnerable in female only space.
There are no doubt many reasons why the other women there had chosen to attend. Its rather arrogant and lacking in consideration and empathy to dismiss the importance of these.
It helped me to gradually build confidence and after a while I chose to go to other mixed swim, aqua-fit sessions which met my needs better as they changed.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 05/02/2019 20:01

Oh that's a shame

Lucydo never did say why she thought it was reasonable of her to say hampstead mens ponds, a male only and gay friendly space, should be opened up to women.

Nor did she engage with the point that years ago I would have thougth of her, what she thinks of others. People have different lines in the sand, and different experiences and levels of empathy.

Oh well never mind.

To anyone reading who may have been upset by her assertions, you're not pathetic, and some posters can be utterly crass.

Toodlepops lucydo.

Didnt think you'd stick around.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 05/02/2019 19:53

But in a pool? With attendants?

You do know theres only one or two life guards to cover watching a pool, theres not enough for them to check the changing village.

Needmoresleep · 05/02/2019 19:52

Obviously women can be irritating as well. Its just that I tend to find them less irritating than men, at least at a gym. I swim fast, and when younger used to be bemused when men would try to overtake. I now find it irritating. Women are usually politer and more considerate.

R0wantrees · 05/02/2019 19:51

I think the vast majority of men do not have a habit of harrassing women. It's silly to circumscribe your life because of a minority

"A new Mumsnet survey to mark the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, run in partnership with Women’s Aid and Surrey Police, reveals that 38% of the survey respondents say they have been in a controlling or abusive relationship* with a partner – but almost a quarter (24%) of users who said they had been in a controlling or abusive relationship told no-one about any incidents of controlling or abusive behaviour"

userschmoozer · 05/02/2019 19:51

Do you think soldiers with shell shock should get over themselves and go back to the frontline?

lucydo · 05/02/2019 19:50

Ok everybody, I've enjoyed the chat. But this is getting weird. I'll leave you all to your tin foil helmets. Toodleoo

lucydo · 05/02/2019 19:49

so, yes, because you can't distinguish rapists from other men, you think all men should be seen as potential rapists? Whereas I think I'd rather live a normal life.

userschmoozer · 05/02/2019 19:49

Why? how many men do you need to be violent in any give group before you start to take precautions? What use are statistics? Go by the behaviour of the people in your space. You don't get to pick and choose all of them.

lucydo · 05/02/2019 19:48

yes, because runners often go through isolated areas, like disused railways lines, with few people around, and often after work. So yes, that is sensible. But in a pool? With attendants?

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 05/02/2019 19:48

so let's just treat all men as potential rapists?

Still havent answered my question:
Go on then tell us how we can tell the rapists and abusers from the men who arent?
