Homophobia and the Modern Trans Movement

Article by Sky Gilbert at Quillette:

When I tried to defend drag queens from the podium, saying that “camp” culture was an important part of our heritage, a trans member of the audience—a person who asked to be identified as “they”—made a statement that still sticks in my mind.

“Remember that the people who died at Pulse nightclub were listening to appropriated music,” they told them room. The speaker was referring to the June 12, 2016 massacre of 49 innocents at a gay dance club in Orlando, Florida, a tragedy that was then still fresh in everyone’s minds. The victims were queers and queer allies. It stands as one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history.

I asked them, “Do you mean to say we shouldn’t mourn the queers who were murdered at Pulse nightclub because they were listening to appropriated music?” There was no clear response—silence and a shrug. No one in the room said anything about this completely shocking display.

It occurred to me at that moment that, in this room full of LGBT artists, a trans person could say something with open and obscene homophobic overtones, and not a single person would call them on it. Shocking as this was, it was a harbinger of things to come.

A good article - he talks about gay erasure and the dangers of transing children.

The old paradigm presented effeminate men as homosexuals who could be cured of their sexual desires. The new paradigm presents effeminate boys as children who can be cured by declaring them girls. And since we have (falsely) decided that their sexuality is irrelevant because they are children and because gender has no relationship to sexuality, proponents can make their case without discussing the off-putting issue of sexual urges. Each child must be raised according to what the child perceives to be their “true gender.”

Children who haven’t gone through puberty lack perspective on the ultimate consequences—both psychological and physical—of their choices. Moreover, since gender and sexuality are linked in real life, it is difficult for any person to understand their identity as a human being (never mind the more narrow category of gender identity) without first experiencing post-adolescent sexual desire.

I think more and more gay men are waking up to the fact that if this ideology had been around when they were children, they'd have been prime targets for Mermaids.

I agree that it's a very good article. Thanks for sharing Aspie!

Isn't that just like a woke version of Pat Robertson blaming 'Teh Gays' for their own suffering for not being godly or whatever? That's pretty unspeakably disgusting.
I think so.
It's a bit like that non-binary person is the priest that declares these innocent victims of a truly horrific nightclub attack sinners. It doesn't matter that their lives were taken in an unimaginable act of hatred and violence through no fault of their own. The victims listened to music that didn't 'officially belong' to them, so they are excommunicated from the church of wokeness and therefore not worthy of the same degree of commemoration or respect. And the congregation says nothing. It's really awful, dangerous, and insane. One wonders about the dynamics that would bring about this level of cruelty in this "community."

Sadly, I am not shocked at all. Sounds about par for the course, when you consider how the LGBTQ ENTIGHWYSHOA2 +++ contingent has been demonizing same-sex attracted females and the accusation by a man claiming to speak for 'queer people' accused women of appropriating the word woman.

I thought the whole article was good but I chose to quote that passage because it shows the utter lack of humanity on the TRA side.

Actually forget the question of appropriation. It’s doing exactly what the fucker who said it intended, which is to distract and diminish those people’s deaths. It is, like so many other things here, disgusting.

AnyOldPrion · 01/02/2019 21:35

What on earth is 'appropriated music'?

I wondered the same. And how does the choice of music supplied by the club make the tiniest difference to the fucking awfulness of the crime?

Haworthia · 01/02/2019 21:33

Wasn’t it a Latino night? So the music was “appropriated”, even though a huge number of those attending were Latino? I don’t get it.

FloralBunting · 01/02/2019 21:31

Did I read that right? What was the reason behind pointing out that the people killed in the Pulse nightclub were listening to something the commenter didn't approve of?

Isn't that just like a woke version of Pat Robertson blaming 'Teh Gays' for their own suffering for not being godly or whatever? That's pretty unspeakably disgusting. I can't believe no one challenged it.

userschmoozer · 01/02/2019 21:26

In reality it would be you dressing up as a Native American and releasing a CD of tribal songs.

In this context its a way of shutting down any dissent by setting up a barrier that no one dare challenge. And then a room full of grown adults choosing to go along with it.

Ah Stonewall!

That reminds me of the petition Jonny Best and his fabulous co-founding signatories started.

Where they write:
Stonewall’s promotion of the concept of 'gender identity’, which has it that a man or woman is anyone (of either sex) who identifies as such, is also undermining the basis of lesbian, gay and bisexual identities as orientated around same-sex attraction. Lesbians in particular are coming under pressure to accept male-bodied trans women into their spaces and as sexual partners.

Do we think that more gay men are going to start speaking out?

EatPeanuts · 01/02/2019 20:54

Fight homophobia - stop Stonewall?

Interesting article.

I am glad he mentioned lesbians.

At Vancouver’s most recent Dyke March, in August, 2018, lesbians wore t-shirts with the word “lesbian” printed over a drawing of a uterus. Naturally, they were accused of hate speech by trans activists, and were banned from their own parade. To be a proud lesbian—in the way that word was defined until about 20 minutes ago—now has become a sort of thoughtcrime. Not just among conservative homophobes, but also among ultra-progressives.

And the fact that trans in fine in some countries whereas being homosexual isn't:

It is interesting that in some countries—some of the most sexually conservative places on earth, as it happens—it is illegal to be gay or lesbian, but perfectly legal to be trans. This year, India decriminalized gay sex; but they have included transgender people in the national census for the last five years. Conservative Nepal has included transgender people in its public records since 2011. In Iran, homosexuality is punishable by death. In fact, the Iranian government pays for sex reassignment surgery—because there is a powerful strain of thought that says anything is better than growing up to be a gay man. Unlike Iran, Canada is not a theocracy. Nevertheless, we are more beholden to such bigotries than we would like to admit.
