“I also have a message to those people who believe they can restrict trans women’s rights, deny their human rights, or exclude them from women-only spaces in the name of feminism: You are not feminists. Your views are not welcome in the Liberal Democrats.”

Just in case anyone is interested in what the Lib Dems are saying.

Wow. Just what exactly does a trans person have to do to not be fawned over by the "progressive" political parties? No doubt Karen White and Nicola Huntley will have jobs waiting for them when they leave prison. They'll be able to take their pick from Labour, the Greens and Lib Dums.

Juells · 04/02/2019 09:46

just been appointed as Diversity Officer for Coventry LibDems yes?

WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF? Is there a date for that?

After everything that was said in that impact report for the Greens.

Weezol · 04/02/2019 09:43

Dear Lib Dems

You lost my vote when you jumped into bed with the Tories and allowed them to fuck this country up the arse without even the courtesy of a reach around.

Your recent statements as to who is and is not 'welcome' in the party confirms my decision.

Rookie mistake Lynne. You need votes.
Desperately. You may want to reconsider who holds the power in your relationship with the electorate.

Yours sincerely

A Feminist.

Just to clarify, hellandhairnets, I do not oppose same-sex marriage and I know that it is important to many same-sex couples.

Same sex marriage is undoubtedly a good thing because it is a recognition that same sex relationships have equal status. However, legally there is very little difference between civil partnerships and marriage. The big social changes happened under the Blair Labour government with the Civil Partnerships Act and the end of Section 28.

ChattyLion · 03/02/2019 20:30

Excellent points Haringey.
The stress of starting your working life out in huge debt, the repayments and putting off the rest of the important things you need to be paying for like a decent home or having kids or making your pensions contributions. Tuition fees also have changed the student- university relationship into a client-provider relationship that seems to mean a race to the bottom in lots of ways.

BlooperReel · 03/02/2019 17:25

Dear Lynne Featherstone,

The Lib Dems are a shocking shower of shite anyway.

Sincerely,

Someone who gives zero fucks on your idea of what a feminist is.

hellandhairnets · 03/02/2019 17:17

*Apparently some in the labour party are planning a breakaway 'centre' party

That'll be interesting though i doubt very much that they will deviate from the script with resoect to self id*

Yeah, I think it's doubtful.

I think our whole political system is breaking apart (probably because we are using old political identities and labels but without any substance or meaning behind them) Frankly, I can't see myself aligning with any party that wilfully avoids issues of class and the resultant power dynamics in its political analysis.

welshgendercrit · 03/02/2019 16:38

Thanks for reminding me about that, Ambroise.

Brilliant apology (even better than Father Jack's!)

Good article. That site seems to be very pro-woman.

It is. It got suspended by Twitter for a while last year because an article it published went against the new hate speech guidelines.

Trousering · 03/02/2019 14:03

Businesses with more than 250+ employees to monitor and publish data on BAME and LGBT employees, not just gender.

This is quite bizzare. I don't want my race and sexuality "monitored" at work. What are they trying to do with this? We are already being contsantly being harrased over female representation in workplaces whith threats of fines if we dont meet targets. The unions are demanding we get 50/50 representation of women when the only way to do this is to cut women's admin jobs and move into the plumbing and carpentry business.

I think we should stop arguing with the prats that trot out the TWAW mantra and just ask them “how?” Not in a nasty way, but just as a question. Rather than arguing with them, just keep asking them to explain what they mean, by each statement they make. They’ll soon start to confuse themselves as their fallacy falls apart.

Juells · 03/02/2019 13:41

When people trot out the "transwomen are actual women" line I want to bellow "you're so stupid that you don't even know that you're demonstrating just how stupid you are every time you lecture everyone else with your fucking nonsense". I always assumed I was a bit dim and that people in positions of authority must be a lot smarter than I am, but the scales have fallen from my eyes with this load of mysogynistic shit.

BettyDuMonde · 03/02/2019 13:25

Just to clarify, hellandhairnets, I do not oppose same-sex marriage and I know that it is important to many same-sex couples..

But coalition politics is about compromise, you will not be able to fulfil every policy promise. And if someone had said to me "you can have either same-sex marriage or tuition fees not being increased" I would have prioritised the latter because

a) no increase of tuition fees was promised to voters
b) gay and lesbian relationships were already given protection through civil partnerships (i.e. no material disadvantage)
c) we now have a generation of students who are lumbered with crippling debt, and this affects especially students from poor families

The other thing: money. Same-sex marriage costs the state almost nothing. Funding higher education does. This is also about the Lib Dems agreeing to austerity.

OldCrone · 03/02/2019 10:33

Lynne thinks that people can actually change sex, Orion. Transmen are men in her world, so she's not concerned about them.

Orionthelion · 03/02/2019 10:28

What about trans men Lynne, or don’t they matter? Very strange for someone commenting about feminism to forget about this group of biological females.

hellandhairnets · 03/02/2019 10:12

I think same sex marriage was a good thing and cannot object to Featherstone's position that - it's been a positive thing for many people close to me.

But she's behaving like an utter bellend with this incl all the "so-called feminist." bullshit. She's an idiot. She used to be my MP too - as many others have said, I am now politically homeless as can't in good conscience vote Labour or Lib Dem, and would never vote Tory.Sadly a lot of London artsy liberal women of my acquaintance (anyone say 'middle class bubble'?) seem to take the same view she does. All happy to dismiss the views of and demonise increasing numbers of women who are standing up for the rights they hold in law. Blind wokeness.. Glad the Communists and Morning Star are holding firm, but really? Is that the only option we're left with here on the left?

HaringeyHarpy · 03/02/2019 09:02

Reading through this thread it occurs to me quite how much Featherstone has done to wreck her own party.

If same-sex marriage was not in the coalition agreement, pushing this issue with the Tories (when it really wasn't something your traditional Tory voter endorsed) meant Lib Dems had to compromise on other issues, such as the very unpopular raising of student fees from 3K to 9K which made and still makes the Lib Dems look like a party for the rich.

Doesn't strike me as politically very savvy.

Especially when, see angry's letter, not all lesbian and gay people see same-sex marriage as be all and end all. (Personally, this does not affect me, so I don't have a strong opinion.)
