So it’s the story that never ends. The Gillette Ad. A watch company that I had never heard of have responded to the Gillette advert with their own ‘what is a man’ advert. It seems to have gone viral too with over 2 million views and mentions in the press. Be keen to hear people’s thoughts. I think it will go down well and boost their sales. m.youtube.com/watch?v=x_HL0wiK4Zc

“We see the good in men”
What exactly do they think the Gillette ad was doing, it showed the positive role men have to play in changing the unacceptable behaviour of other men. What did this ad show?

www.google.com/amp/s/www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/what-is-a-man-dont-ask-gillette-ask-egard-watch-company%3f_amp=true

So according to this article the ad is showing statistics which "are meant to educate people about the hidden realities of men's lives."

So it literally is a punch back from the other ad to tell us to shut up. As Sonic posted, with no suggestion of what men should/could do to change the statistics.

The people supporting this ad are the same group who think that paying extra taxes for a social support network is Socialism and therefore evil.
The comments are full of people saying they will buy a watch; not one suggestion of how to fix the problems faced by the men.

Ahh yes that fig was 79 not 97%, apologies.
I think the Gillette ad had its faults (overall I really liked it) however for me, I liked that it got people talking as much and I think the core message is fantastic. I don't really care who starts the conversation but the fact it's come from a company whilst promoting a product often aimed at men is brilliant.

But this ad just irritates me first, then confuses me second. I'm not quite sure what the point is except to say "Shut up women the menz are victims too".

I think the high homicide stats don’t include domestic violence. When you include that there are different victim rates between sexes

They're a US company - suspect their stats are US based.

And why are half of the men who aren't bothering/allowed to see their children not paying child support either?

Bit of an own goal there. I've never heard of them. If I were looking for a watch I'd go elsewhere.

I liked the Gillette ad.

Freespeecher · 22/01/2019 21:03

I'd never heard of them before and now I have. Job done I suppose.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 22/01/2019 21:01

Was the inclusion of that statistic meant to make men-as-a-class look good? Because it does the opposite.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 22/01/2019 20:58

That video makes me think that men are involved in a lot of violent and dangerous activities.

Maybe men should do something about that.

MIdgebabe · 22/01/2019 20:36

ISNt it that 97% of perpetrators are male but about 79. % of victims are Male?

Unless it’s focussed on a specific country .

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 22/01/2019 20:04

Oooh goody, some Whataboutery!

97% of homicide victims are men. Going to bet that a HUGE % of the perpetrators are other men.
