Women are a subset of people who can menstruate

I mean, that is basically all. Could it be clearer that this movement wants to erase women, and therefore prevent women from naming our sex-based oppression?

I'm not a subset of anything. I'm a woman.
Admittedly I'm in a stinkingly bad mood at the moment (illness mostly but I'm pissed off that all the bloody hard work previous generations of feminists have done to tear down walls and remove labels has been taken over by asshats who think what we all need is more sodding labels.
Fuck off with your subsets.

.

Women are a subset of people who can menstruate

Perhaps 'menstruators' is such a degrading description of women they'd rather leave it to the vagina people.....

Given the number of trans women who claim to menstruate or at least have 'periods' because having periods has nothing to do with female biology, you can identify into and out of them I would imagine that they aren't too happy with this either

Bluebellsarebells · 21/01/2019 09:21

So we have to include trans men and non binary people and trans women, in every little thing we do or say it seems.
Remind me who men are being forced to include and make room for..
I've not been a mensrtuator for 2 years, got myself a lovely implant so I don't have to suffer debilitating Hormone induced headaches every month, its almost as if I'm a man.
In fact is it only mensrtuators who have to be inclusive? Can I just opt out of this absolute bullshit like the men have?

Apologies WeRise. Apparently I can’t read. No idea how I missed your post.

AnyOldPrion · 21/01/2019 07:25

As Billy demonstrates, the statement is untrue. Women are not a subset of menstruators. Menstruators are a subset of women. It doesn’t work the other way round.

WeRiseUp · 21/01/2019 05:09

That tweet screen-grabbed in the OP surely excludes 'transwomen' doesn't it (along with women who are menopausal, etc)?

A subset means all members of it belong to the main category.

It is saying 'all women and some others menstruate'.

How come the TRAs aren't up in arms about that?

Perhaps 'menstruators' is such a degrading description of women they'd rather leave it to the vagina people.....

But then again, I bet there are some AGPs mincing about calling each other menstruators, as we speak, at venues like the Way Out club. You can't bloody win with people who turn every aspect of your life into wank fodder.

But it's not about fluidity really is it? It's an opt-out.
We could opt out of being "western" so we didn't have to feel any guilt or concern for a poor Malian woman with too any kids and FGM injuries. In fact, that kind of thinking might be why women are opting out of being women.

shiveringtimber · 21/01/2019 04:25

I must be too old or something because all this nonsense (to me it's nonsense anyway) about binary, non-binary, gender fluidity, gender this, gender that, etc, etc is getting on my tits. Genetics largely determine our biological sex, male or female, end of. How we identify ourselves is now the Big Issue, apparently. Why now? Is it a fad? Why am I being forced to care? At the university I attend, the nearest washrooms are gender neutral which annoys me because I don't want to men to hear me fart or have a cry or watch me reapply my lipstick. The men look just as uncomfortable as I feel.Hmm

FlyingOink · 21/01/2019 04:08

Non binary is not something I've given a lot of time to, I hear it and assume a bad dye job and some ear stretchers, frankly.
But it's an interesting idea. If you can legally (and in some places you can) opt out of being either sex, what else can you opt out of?
For example you could be both adult and child, or both disabled and able bodied, why create any distinctions that are binary when everything is a spectrum? And both age and disability could much more reasonably be described as on a spectrum.
Age wise, one could identify as (say) 17 permanently. Full time education forever but able to consent to sex, for example.
We create those descriptive binaries for reasons of segregation, basically. Employed/unemployed. Adult/child. Qualifying/non-qualifying.
What if I identify as non-British, (not far off non-dom tax status!) but don't chose to identify as any other nationality? Does that make me stateless?
We don't really allow any other non-binary choices, but there seems to be growing acceptance of non-binary as both valid (you can't opt out of reality) and a choice (you can't choose reality).
Where legal provision recognises this it (to my mind) creates an equally dangerous precedent to accepting men are women because they say so.

NotMeOhNo · 21/01/2019 03:31

"Woman" is inclusive to trans men and non binary!

GrinitchSpinach · 21/01/2019 03:01

Ok, for those who are unclear on material reality: women (and girls) form the sex class that is capable of ova production, menstruation and gestation. The fact that a very small minority of girls are born without that capability, and the fact that older women sometimes lose that capability because of medical conditions or just living long enough to achieve menopause, does not obscure the fact that women are the only sex class capable of producing ova and gestating zygotes/embryros/fetuses and then giving birth to infant humans.

I stopped being a woman 16 months ago then, when I had my last period. What am I now please?

WhatToDoForTheBest2019 · 21/01/2019 02:27

And if you don't menstruate?? Ffs.
