Women are a subset of people who can menstruate

I mean, that is basically all. Could it be clearer that this movement wants to erase women, and therefore prevent women from naming our sex-based oppression?

Well right. These people are missing the very basics of logic. They don't know that 'same' and 'different' are distinct concepts. They don't know that a 'part' of a thing is not the same as the 'whole' thing.

It's this ridiculous, ridiculous, ridiculous fudging of the concepts of what is objectively 'identical' and what people subjectively 'identify' as.

newtlover · 21/01/2019 21:57

my explanation of this is simple, the person OP quotes just doesn't understand what 'subset' means
what they intended was
menstruators are a subset of women
which is true
I expect they would claim some other groups to be subsets of women, and they would probably be wrong
there is such a frustrating lack of critical thinking in the TRA narrative, I blame the teachers....or more likely Gove, or possibly Thatcher, for emphasising measurable results in schools over skills development including critical thinking
of course, plain common sense would also blow the whole thing out of the water, and I am hopeful it will in the end, but these kids think they are too clever for common sense, so ironic

It’s all the pretending
Fuck it’s like playing with toddlers where you have to pretend
But naw just naw

Nutjobbery
My new favourite word
Nutjobbery
So much of it from the wokies

I thought you might be, Jelly, but wanted to respond in earnest for anyone lurking and still making up his or her mind about these arguments.

I was actually being cynical in suggesting 'female'. Obviously the AWA TRAs (and their Handmaidens in the Faith) don't accept that, either.

WeRiseUp · 21/01/2019 17:03

Hear hear! Knicknack

Knicknackpaddyflak · 21/01/2019 16:48

Surely it is impossible for anyone, other than a woman to menstruate?

It is. You know this. I know this. They know this. We all know this.

This is about pretending that some women are not women, and pretending that some men are women, depending on what that individual wants to be called.

And now, this bullshit is about desperately trying to avoid using the word 'woman' or 'female' in relation to women, in order to please men who want to be women and know damn well they aren't.

They've appropriated woman, female, some insist that they have periods despite not having the equipment or bleeding (they apparently have mood swings which is JUST THE SAME... fgs), if women called themselves cassette radio players, it would take only days for TW to call themselves cassette radio players too and find a way in which THEY were cassette radio players and women were cis, or musical units or something.

The fact that the whole 'cis', 'menstruators' and other nutjobbery completely undermines everything they've said and that the narrative is demonstrably totally incoherent doesn't bother them because this is batshit . I'm done indulging it. At all. From the replies to the twitter feed, many women have hit the same point. There is a time to be kind, and there is a time to say get your size 13s the fuck off my foot right now.

GrinitchSpinach · 21/01/2019 13:52

If 'women' is a term that frightens trans and non-binary people, how about using 'females' instead? It is an even more inclusive term, as it includes girls as well.

Two problems with that:

  1. Some of these male people claim to be "females" too. Whatever word we use, they want it. They are very focused on the "exclusionary" part of that T* slur. They don't want women to have anythinga space, a word, political representationto ourselves.

  2. Females includes women and girls, but also cows, ewes, sows, etc. The word woman is necessary because it means (and has always meant!) adult human female.

Quite so. A subset of females menstruate at some point in their lives. It's just a normal female bodily function. No subset of males menstruates.

'Inclusive' language should be accurate and never dehumanising. Feminism should include females - including those who reject 'femininity'. It should not include males, although feminism may often help them too.

GCSocScientist that's one of the best posts I've ever read on this forum. Well said.

I really don’t get this. Surely it is impossible for anyone, other than a woman to menstruate?

AngryAttackKittens · 21/01/2019 11:52

Well, women are a subset of the category "humans", but TRAs seem to object strenuously to that idea.

Olgatheoptimist · 21/01/2019 11:49

and women will NEVER be a subset of anything

Olgatheoptimist · 21/01/2019 11:47

Non-binary is not something I've given a lot of time to, I hear it and assume a bad dye job and some ear stretchers, frankly

this : )

MrsWinkly · 21/01/2019 11:43

My word, that's a bold statement. And also a massive load of shit. You only need to think about the word-jumble for a millisecond before it becomes impossible to accept. Because of reality.
Ugh, so tiring.

I really could not care less about the make believe language that exists outside those scientific perimeters
Precisely this GCSocScientist

AngryAttackKittens · 21/01/2019 11:26

"Doesn't understand how human biology works", "wishful thinking", and "complete and utter bollocks" are all subsets of the larger category "TRA ideology".

GCSocScientist · 21/01/2019 11:23

This country has a huge problem with elevating objective scientific facts above polemics.

Scientific facts are superior to (woke-bro) political polemics. End of.

Those with XY chromosomes are born as and will die XYs, they are scientifically and popularly known as boys and men.

Those with XXs chromosomes are born as and will die XXs, they are scientifically and popularly known as girls and women.

I really could not care less about the make believe language that exists outside those scientific perimeters.

Do we really need to have a protracted discussion about the centering of clown fish in our feminist movements.
The answer I am hoping for is : NO.

Are TRAs, and their handmaids, intentionally denying objective sex based reality and side lining scientific facts to secure political gains: YES.

Calvinsmam · 21/01/2019 10:52

This really annoys me.

I’ve seen on twitter today people saying that issues around periods (such as period poverty) aren’t ‘women’s issues’ but are ’menstruater issues’.
This is complete bullshit,
I don’t menstruate because I am on the mirena coil, the reason I am on the mirena coil is because it stops my periods and it means I won’t get pregnant. All my life I have had to deal with being the of the sex class that gestates the young, it’s not just about the physical act of menstruation but that is one element that comes with being the sex class who gestates the young.
No one looking at me can tell if I menstruate or not, but they can tell I am a woman, most discrimination I receive is not because of the actual act but because of the fact that people perceive my body to be able to do it.
I pump hormones into my body so that I won’t menstruate and won’t get pregnant in the past I did this because it meant I didn’t have to buy tampons and pads when I couldn’t afford it.

I don’t know if I’m explaining my self properly but saying period issues only affect women who menstruate makes me so fucking angry.

The burden of hormonal contraception, the perception that you will get pregnant so might be a job risk, the fact that many drugs are only tested on Male bodies because the change of hormones during a woman’s cycle means it’s deemed too complicated to test on women. These things affect all women, and the the things that don’t affect all women the only people they do affect are women.

bluescreen · 21/01/2019 10:46

(Some) women, (some) girls and (some) trans men can menstruate. So the statement is a bit inaccurate whichever way you cut it. Particularly considering that in some societies, menarche defines womanhood.

JSmitty · 21/01/2019 10:41

If a menstruating woman idetifies as a man, where are we then?
