"Tens of thousands of pounds has been raised for transgender charity Mermaids, thanks to a Twitch streamer playing Donkey Kong 64 for an entire day.

HBomberGuy (Harry Brewis), a popular UK-based content creator who has more than 300,000 subscribers on YouTube, came up with an unlikely way to raise money for the embattled transgender children’s charity, which recently had part of its lottery funding suspended after a campaign from anti-trans activists."

I see very few of them actually engage with anyone's criticisms of Mermaids

Yeah I don't get it either SharkBastard. Seems like a cynical play for fame/notoriety (raising money to spite someone, who just happens to be a celebrity, have a catchphrase and a hashtag to that effect...).

I see very few of them actually engage with anyone's criticisms of Mermaids, beyond "they help trans children, you big meanies!"

SharkBastard · 21/01/2019 06:42

Who knew gamers had such expendable income, but good for them raising money for charities.

Still unsure how this is supposed to be galling to anyone let alone Graham, but whatever floats your boat, Harrop.

Katispancuddly · 21/01/2019 06:00

Ahh gina that's great
That's enough for 2 1/2 people to transition as successfully as Munroe Bergdorf.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 21/01/2019 03:01

Nice to have this all in one place.

May 2018 Spectator 'Why are some MPs trying to shut down the transgender debate?'
by James Kirkup

(extract)
[Stephen Doughty MP] said. “Do you think the use of the phrase “trans lobby” is an appropriate one?”

As it happens, Dr Carmichael in her lecture said some things that seem relevant here:

“Gender has become amazingly topical and we have to be really careful not to assume that anyone is exploring or questioning their gender is going to want to change their bodies in line with that. The extremes on either side are not helpful. We need to look at the grey areas in between. To do that we need to be able to talk and discuss these issues. All too often stakeholders become lobby groups.”

She did not name any stakeholder. But her words might be relevant to a charity called Mermaids. Mermaids is a charity that describes itself as “a support group for children and young people with gender dysphoria and their families”. Its CEO, Susie Green describes herself as “parent to a daughter who was born male.” Mermaids is a relatively small charity (it had income of £127,000 in the year to March 2017) with a big reach. It has prominent backers and its advice and recommendations have been absorbed and adopted by many public bodies.

Some people in the gender debate say harsh and critical things about Mermaids. I am not doing so here. My suggestion is that Green, having had her own family experience of transgender issues, has decided to devote herself to charitable work in the hope of offering what she believes as help to others who need it. The same is true of several others who work or volunteer at Mermaids. Read this for a moving account of how devoted some parents are to Mermaids for their help.

Despite its influence, it is worth noting what Mermaids is not. It is not a research body. Its activities are support (for families) and advocacy: based on its contacts with those families, it argues for what it sees are better policies and practices by the NHS and others. It does not carry out or commission clinical or academic research. Its most recent annual report lists among its charitable activities “campaigning and advocacy” and says: “Mermaids has also become more active in lobbying”.

There is regular dialogue between Mermaids and the GIDS, but the two sides do not always agree. An example is on the time the GIDS team take to give referred children the hormone-blocking drugs that stop their bodies developing the physical characteristics associated with their birth sex.

In evidence to another Commons inquiry in 2015, Mermaids argued that GIDS should make such drugs available much more quickly. The GIDS team has generally resisted that call, more than once saying that “any decision around hormone treatment needs time and considered thought.”

And in evidence to that earlier committee, Dr Bernadette Wren of the GIDS said this:

“I know that Susie and Mermaids would like a fast track so that young people who are already well into puberty and feel that they know that they want to move forward into physical intervention would bypass our assessment process and move straight into physical intervention. We feel that is not an ethical way to practise.”

Here’s another summary. A transgender charity that says it is engaged in lobbying lobbied politicians and doctors to change the way children are treated by doctors. The doctors declined to make that change because it would be not be ethical to do so." (continues)

Up to $264k. Thanks Graham.

Thingybob · 20/01/2019 14:49

I think they'll need the money to re write all that Pencils, nobody will politely accept the jelly baby argument any more. Can't wait to see the revamped training, will it include liquorice allsorts or sherbet fountains?

I imagine this is the sort of thing Mermaids will be spending the money on:

I see Mermaids are still linking to Helen Webberley's 'Gender GP' Blush

Webberley was recently convicted of running an illegal gender clinic for children. She prescribed cross-sex hormones to a 12 year old.

Interesting link to a scientific letter written by a paediatric consultant regarding use of pubity blockers. I know it's science so probably should be dismissed as "rubbish" I mean, what do Doctors know? They aren't Professors of Bantz and Feelz after all.
Confused

Mermaids were complaining the Times accused them of recommending cross sex hormones on the first visit. Actually it was "just" pubity blockers.

Such a noble cause.

Ah well, if public funding is hard to come by of course it makes sense to rely on the goodwill of obsessive gamer dudebros and fetish drag queens.

Puppies and sweeties don't grow on trees, you know!

Thingybob · 20/01/2019 12:26

I'm pleased that HBomberGuy has raised so much money for two reasons. Firstly it is preferable for Mermaids to be funded by private donations rather than public money and secondly, by raising so much money he has also raised awareness of how divided the public are on the charity. Surely if it makes a teacher stop, think and do a little more research before blindly repeating jelly baby stories or causes a parent to look more deeply before picking up the phone to the Mermaids helpline, then that must be a good thing?

Deliriumoftheendless · 20/01/2019 12:18

I think the attitude of doing something nice out of spite is a reflection that many of these people think any fundraisers done by the women here must be done out of malice rather than genuine reasons.

A lot seem young (child free) and simply don’t believe that feminists actually care about children (hence the idea trans kids are hated) and so fundraise for evil or stop funding because of evil rather than a more nuanced take that adults are genuinely concerned how children will fare in the future.

When you have one set of voice flat out lying and repeating falsehoods it’s easy to feel people are gunning for mermaids for the wrong reasons, but actually people are concerned and want a deeper investigation rather than uncritical praise. Probably because we’ve seen these situations before and the end results have been harmful.

fidgetspinner555 · 20/01/2019 12:03

That Reddit article is interesting - loads of kids who say that puberty blockers are harmless and have no lasting effects. The brainwashing of the youth has been completed.

Oh and we're all Greer era t*rfs.

Ereshkigal · 20/01/2019 12:01

Can you elaborate on what you mean by "scary things"? from what I've read they're a pretty well respected charity

There are plenty of threads on here, as well as Twitter. Do feel free to inform yourself better.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 20/01/2019 11:54

Why on earth would raising money be "sticking it" to anyone?
Sometimes the logic is so hard to follow...
But then when you don't understand what our problem with mermaids actually is and only have out of context screenshots I guess it's easy to believe maybe that we don't like donkey Kong?

Quite, Delirium. They seem to think they are sticking it to us and Graham. Uh no, do what you want with your time and money.

I know, I'd rather they took money from uninformed wokesters than taxpayers money or lottery money. We'll continue to raise our concerns about this organisation.

Datun · 20/01/2019 11:23

There is a very lengthy thread on kiwi farms about Hbomberguy.

Indeed. And I only read half the first page. I'm not sure Mermaids should be publicising any connection to this person.

HalloumiGus · 20/01/2019 11:18

Those case studies from the Mermaids site give me the rage. By their explanation my doll / dress rejecting and obsession with running wild / playing with action figures meant that I was a man born in the wrong body. Except instead I'm a 40 something mother who still mostly lives in jeans and boots and rarely wears makeup. Just because I never played with dollies does not a transman make me.

KlutzyDraconequus · 20/01/2019 11:15

I'm not really a Reddit sort of person but this thread, topic, discussion or whatever they call it was interesting.

Oh yes, that Kiwi Farms thread is VERY illuminating!! Do go and have a look with the sorts of people he associates with.
