"Tens of thousands of pounds has been raised for transgender charity Mermaids, thanks to a Twitch streamer playing Donkey Kong 64 for an entire day.

HBomberGuy (Harry Brewis), a popular UK-based content creator who has more than 300,000 subscribers on YouTube, came up with an unlikely way to raise money for the embattled transgender children’s charity, which recently had part of its lottery funding suspended after a campaign from anti-trans activists."

Great post CroneXX

I'm sure I saw a twitter thread on why this motion was breaking all sorts of rules, but I can't find it now.

BlackForestCake · 28/01/2019 00:18

It is very common at all levels of government for motions to be raised congratulating this or condemning that – doesn’t have to be anything that the parliament concerned is actually responsible for.

short version:
He had two friends, one friend threatened or tried to rape the other friend.
When that friend told Hbomber what happened, Hbomber sided with the one making threats and not the victim.

Theres a bit more to it tho.

Sounds like the type to support the sterilisation of children.

What was it that HBomberguy did?

KlutzyDraconequus · 26/01/2019 10:14

I'm a bit confused about why this is only coming out now?

People knew at the time. People tried to mention it on Reddit and other places, but got shouted down.

People will conveniently over look horrible attitudes if there's a bandwagon to jump on. If you try to highlight those horrible attitudes, the band wagons wheels will roll straight over you.

Can anyone explain what is going on here?

It seems that HBomberGuy has not always been a 'woke hero', but I'm a bit confused about why this is only coming out now?

Professionals and charities working with children & vulnerable young people who understand Safeguarding would be cautious about enouraging the children and young people to join streamed online gaming events and also very unlikely to use anecdotes about belief of suicide by young people to claim validity for the service they provide.

JoanSummers · 24/01/2019 12:55

I think they do see, they just prioritise the feelings of the trunk swinger.

nauticant · 24/01/2019 12:45

I've said this before but even when the elephant in the room whips out its trunk and shows it to the room, people still won't see.

Last part of the BBC interview linked above transcribed:

Susie Green "The demand for our services is continuing to rise , we've seen it go from 5000 to over 7000 again within the space of a year in terms of calls and emails and families and young people coming to us.

We are primarily a children's support charity and we support kids that are dealing with gender varience to try and achieve the best outcomes and that can come from directly supporting young people or from supporting the family as a whole

The bottom line is that we are getting more and more and more coming to us and we need to be able to cope with that demand and this was such a massive boost for us to be able to do that

Interviewer "and have told him that? Have you been in contact with him presumably?"

Yes absolutely we went on line when he was actually talking to some of the other people from around the globe and talked to him about what a difference this would make.

I actually heard a young person who'd contacted us a couple of years ago and spoke to one of our helpline operators and she said, "I wouldn't be here if it weren't for you'

Interviewer "Amazing, amazing work"

Susie Green "and that really choked me up, because I was like, this is what we're here for. You know this is what we're here for to provide that support especially when someone's in a really dark space and to help them get through'

Interviewer "Great, yes well done, congratulations"

JoanSummers · 24/01/2019 12:37

The reason for that is a large part of the elephant in the room here.

This, so much this.

Always walking on eggshells.

Ereshkigal · 24/01/2019 12:34

It's very worrying that these people don't care that everyone can see.

Mermaids don't have a narrative that would benefit from control

A stunning and braveâ„¢ narrative has just gained them a couple of hundred grand.

Datun · 24/01/2019 11:34

Mermaids don't have a narrative that would benefit from control. Their entire narrative is regressive and based on prejudice.

You can't 'teach' people about a disassociative condition that is the result of gendered stereotypes being enforced, if you are doing it by enforcing those gender stereotypes. Anyone with a grain of logic will expose it immediately.

And as for that Ada individual. Dear Lord. Actually telling everyone that they want to help children become isolated from their parents. Confused, vulnerable children who are being influenced online.

When you are using mermaids as a demonstration of unwanted safeguarding, you've hit rock bottom and exposed your agenda.

It's very worrying that these people don't care that everyone can see.

nauticant · 24/01/2019 09:39

It means that Mermaids are now going to be visible to many more people than before. Which is great for them if they can keep complete control of the narrative of what they do and why they do it. One slip though and this could lead to them facing difficult questions coming from all over the place.

FloralBunting · 24/01/2019 08:45

Well, that's interesting. In terms of group dynamics, it may well end up that SG's apparent inflated sense of importance carries her only so far before she faces her own backlash...

Danaquestionseverything · 24/01/2019 01:09

I know I just happened upon it and found it interesting. Did Ada have something to do with the manifesto calling for release of all trans prisoners?

I saw that Ro I also saw how the less "extreme" activists did nothing to condemn the behaviour and were supporting their narrative.
