Women's March London says trans voices should be elevated over women's voices

Women's march london is a fully intersectional and trans inclusive collective, as laid out in our guiding principles. We fully recognise trans women as women and sisters and welcome them to all our actions. We acknowledge that all who were assigned female at birth, including our trans brothers and some non-binary siblings share many of the same struggles and believe that the voices of trans men and AFAB non-binary people should always be heard and elevated in discussions of reproductive justice or menstrual equity.
We will not tolerate anyone who comes to our actions or our spaces with the intent to cause harm to others and believe that transphobia has no place in feminist action. Bread and Roses is an all genders action and one where we hope people of all genders and none can feel safe and welcome. If any trans sibling feels threatened or unsafe on the march we urge them to come speak to our stewards or one of the organisers and we will do our best to help.

People don't act like that towards people who they see as disenfranchised, they act like that towards people who they believe have the power to crush them if they don't show respect.

Exactly. Women do not treat other women this way.

AngryAttackKittens · 19/01/2019 12:36

Every time I read or hear that sort of "especially trans women" and "must be elevated" stuff I picture the person who's saying it nervously curtseying, like if she doesn't one of the royal guards will chop off her head.

It's a fear/submission gesture. People don't act like that towards people who they see as disenfranchised, they act like that towards people who they believe have the power to crush them if they don't show respect.

If Posie gets taken to court, we will show them what a proper women's march looks like.

This.

I was wondering what a good term would be for this new wave male centred feminism. I think Pop nails it with doormat feminism.

Bergdorf is incredible in many ways. I think wtaf every time.

And that emperor is still stark bollock naked. Marching about stuff and announcing stuff and putting it on nicely branded posters does not make it any less batshit, or convincing. The average woman is going to look at this and think - you're all mad. And go about their daily lives. Woman is a biological reality, that is the beginning and the end of it.

deepwatersolo · 19/01/2019 12:09

So, when all is said and done, the Canadian tampon guy who wants his lady balls shaved is the most oppressed of them all, eh?

deepwatersolo · 19/01/2019 12:07

The explanations for this are a little tricky to unpick!

No shit.
Wink

R0wantrees · 19/01/2019 12:04

Yes thats 'transmisogyny' and means that transwomen must be centred by TRAs as well.

I think (but am not completely sure) that for some who subscribe to this aspect of the trans-ideology / oppression hierarchy add that non-binary transwomen are additionally oppressed and need further centring within the centre.

The explanations for this are a little tricky to unpick!

Gawd help us!

OrchidInTheSun · 19/01/2019 11:36

This is nice Hmm

R0wantrees · 19/01/2019 11:32

Yes thats 'transmisogyny' and means that transwomen must be centred by TRAs as well.

Freespeecher · 19/01/2019 11:30

On another thread it was mentioned that, with transmen being accepted as men, they're treated as male oppressors by TRAs and thus come below transwomen in the totem pole of interest groups.

Didn't think it was possible to go through more than one looking glass at the same time but here we are.

OrchidInTheSun · 19/01/2019 11:29

So, let me get this straight: transwomen are women; transmen are women; non-binary people 'assigned female at birth' are women; and non-binary people who were 'assigned male at birth' but now identify as women (like Jess Bradley) are also women.

So the only people who are men are the ones who were assigned male at first and don't identify as women.

The inclusivity only ever goes one way doesn't it?

R0wantrees · 19/01/2019 11:29

"Bread and Roses is an all genders action and one where we hope people of all genders and none can feel safe and welcome"

Sentences like this make me want to get a red pen out.

"Bread and Roses is for all people & we hope that everyone feels safe and welcome"

OlennasWimple · 19/01/2019 11:28

I like that they recognise that transmen even exist, and have issues in commons with plain old women.

If elevating their voices "in discussions of reproductive justice of menstrual equity" means supporting terms like "menstruator" and "gestational carrier" then they can fuck right off

Popchyk · 19/01/2019 11:25

"Bread and Roses is an all genders action and one where we hope people of all genders and none can feel safe and welcome".

How is that centering female people exactly?

R0wantrees · 19/01/2019 11:24

elevated
/ˈɛlɪveɪtɪd/
adjective
situated or placed higher than the surrounding area.

(of a level or amount) higher or greater than normal.

of a high intellectual or moral level.

WongaGoneWronga · 19/01/2019 11:18

The thread title is misleading - there's isn't anything in that statement that says "over" or "above" either directly or indirectly, and there are posts in response that seem to have got the wrong end of the stick on what the statement actually says.

....believe that the voices of trans men and AFAB non-binary people should always be heard and elevated in discussions of reproductive justice or menstrual equity. ...

Trans men and AFAB non-binary, not all trans people.

Elevated in, not above or over.

In discussion of reproductive and menstrual things, not unilaterally.

Plus it's centreing people who we're born female, which I'm inclined to think is a good thing and seems to be what's most people on this board would like to see more of.

Popchyk · 19/01/2019 11:13

Doormat feminism.

Can't see it lasting long.

deepwatersolo · 19/01/2019 11:06

Why would womensmarchlondon organize not a women's march but a people's march? Where is the logic in that? Shouldn't they call themselves peoplesmarch london for consistency? I mean, what is next? will womensmarchlondon swim in Glasgow?

littlbrowndog · 19/01/2019 10:52

Good one popchyck

ChewyLouie · 19/01/2019 10:52

Popchyk yes looking forward to reading about a middle aged woman with four kids declaring she’s a trans man then demanding Fathers4Justice now centre her needs. Seems odd that TRAs are not harassing them to change their logo symbol and to include the needs of transmen as much as male born fathers. All this work is very much in one direction- for the benefit of mtf transitioners.
It could be argued that Stephen Whittle seems intent on dismantling and stamping out women’s rights I can’t see a similar campaign for his fellow transmen.
