Got stared at in the restroom

Another day, another male who feels entitled to use women's spaces. Responses all support the male's "right" to be there, discount the woman's obvious discomfort with the male's presence.

People's personal relationships are totally irrelevant in this.

I think most of us are in favour of people being happy together, whatever their identities and genitals!

But in the UK, it is generally accepted that women's toilets are for the exclusive use of women and girls; very young boys accompanied by mum are also acceptable.

But 19-year-old men? No, they are not women. Never have been, never will be. They belong in the Men's. Why are they bullying women about this?

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 13/01/2019 00:10

it's a little unreasonable to use the threat of implied sexual violence against anyone

Male-bodied people in the ladies are a walking threat of implied sexual violence to many or most women, whether they mean to be or not.

FloralBunting · 13/01/2019 00:10

It's a little unreasonable to use the threat of implied sexual violence against anyone (even someone you disagree with). To carry on being clear, I don't believe the mother in this event was knowingly doing so but, with this knowledge in mind, it doesn't seem terribly pleasant to continue supporting her actions

There was no implied 'sexual violence' whatsoever. The mother looked sternly at the person. She was in there with a child. The case you have brought up was two women drunkenly groping the trans person.
Are you seriously suggesting that this person feared that the mother was about to do that?

GrinitchSpinach · 13/01/2019 00:09

Jeez, what a world we live in, unbelievable! Grin

So, the TW has a "girlfriend", which is quite common nowadays - what with the "girldick" phenom which is all the rage nowadays and the "lesbianleftie" nonsense.
Sorry for the earlier comments but the whole thing has finally clicked into place.
Jeez, what a world we live in, unbelievable!

Grinitch

Sorry, but to be honest, given the text and no sources I had absolutely no idea what was happening here.
So, what we are saying, is that it was the one writing the report who was trans, and complaining about a mother and her child in their correct place?
If that is the case then I stand corrected and totally agree, but when I clicked on the text there simply was not enough information.

GrinitchSpinach · 12/01/2019 23:51

To put this in context, Gronky, the poster seemed most concerned with the poster's appearance and explicitly found any potential threat of violence funny, cf the rest of the poster's message:

The poster was amused by friend's misunderstanding of the double meaning, in American English, of the word "clocked." (Can mean either "observed/noticed" or "punched.")

To put this in further context, according to Wikipedia (I'm sure could find further sources with more effort but I need to bathe children now), in the U.S. in 2014 "Men accounted for 80.4 percent of persons arrested for violent crime." And in 2011 "Males constituted 98.9% of those arrested for forcible rape."

So yes, I feel the mother in the ladies' room with her child was not unreasonable or wrong to LOOK at a male person in that intimate space.

PennyLaneIsInMyHeart, disagreeing with someone or failing to arouse their interest on a particular issue doesn't inherently make you a bigot. Please don't wind yourself up just because you have a different opinion.

BubonicTheHedgehag · 12/01/2019 23:45

Why and how on earth (please explain with workings!) would a mother taking her young daughter to the women's toilet, ever, ever represent a threat of violence towards a man who should not have been there anyway, in the women's toilet?!

Bonkers!!!

PennyLaneIsInMyHeart · 12/01/2019 23:39

I have had enough of this bullshit. These poor, hard done by, entitled men.

What makes it worse for me, quite honestly, is how so many other women I have discussed these issues with either have no idea what is going on, or no desire to get upset by it. I am made to feel like an unreasonable bigot.

BiologyNotBigotry · 12/01/2019 23:37

They didn't even look at the mum long enough to be able to say what her expression was. They just assumed that the mum was staring & ran away. I don't even look at other people in the toilet - it's entirely possible that the mum was just absent-mindedly staring into space while waiting for the child to finish! The self-obsessed paranoia is palpable... Hmm

Gronky · 12/01/2019 23:35

That is precisely why they are used and I applaud the mum for it.

Just to be clear, I have no problem with it in and of itself but I think within the context of current events, it's a little unreasonable to use the threat of implied sexual violence against anyone (even someone you disagree with). To carry on being clear, I don't believe the mother in this event was knowingly doing so but, with this knowledge in mind, it doesn't seem terribly pleasant to continue supporting her actions.

ChewyLouie people are quite capable of doing the wrong things for the (apparent) right reasons.

BubonicTheHedgehag · 12/01/2019 23:32

Yes indeed, FB - I applaud the mum too. Well done that mum.

Mum was taking her daughter to the women's toilets. Encountered a man in there, in the women's toilets. Mum instantly spotted a huge red flag when she saw it. Mum went into alert mode because there was a man in the women's toilets.

Yes, well done, that mum Flowers

ChewyLouie · 12/01/2019 23:27

Gronky read back what you wrote, you’re taking the piss. You know it, I know it. End of goady interjection.

FloralBunting · 12/01/2019 23:24

Gosh, yes, because who could you possibly have meant by 'women' in a sentence like that?

And yes, I can understand why a person may feel intimidated by a Paddington hard mum stare. That is precisely why they are used and I applaud the mum for it.

Gronky · 12/01/2019 23:17

The two scenarios are in no way comparable.

I completely acknowledge that they're not comparable from a rational standpoint but, in the context of an acute fear it's quite understandable (at least to me) that the person being stared at might have been concerned that it was a prelude to physical violence.

Woman is enough, no need to add extra descriptions.

I understand that the use of the term can be grating but it seemed more ambiguous when phrased as 'women aren't a threat to trans women'.

ChewyLouie · 12/01/2019 23:10

Gronky pretty feeble try there, the article you posted puts nothing into context as this was a woman with her child. The two scenarios are in no way comparable.
Genetic woman, wtf yet another pile of horseshit to describe the term woman. Woman is enough, no need to add extra descriptions.

Mutakirorikatum · 12/01/2019 23:00

Ah yes, looking while female. She probably had thoughts and opinions too.

How very dare she.

Hmm
Gronky · 12/01/2019 22:56

To put this in context, this may explain her concerns, considering it only happened 3 days ago:
www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/two-women-sexually-assaulted-trans-woman-north-carolina-bathroom-police-n956671

Naturally NAWALT applies, the vast majority of genetic women aren't a threat to trans women.

FloralBunting · 12/01/2019 22:47

EJennings, but...But when Posie laughed on This Morning, the papers called her 'disrespectful'. It would be so awful if certain people thought we were being disrespectful. Or if we looked at them.

Really, we should probably not go out, or maybe look at the floor all the time if we absolutely have to go out.

CourageCalls · 12/01/2019 22:47

You can bet your life if I'm in a small enclosed space with my child and I spot a man who shouldn't be in there I'm gonna watch him. I'm not taking my eyes off him!

Zero empathy. Agree Lang

CottonTailRabbit · 12/01/2019 21:14

That's why he couldn't eat his dinner. He got a mum look. He knows he's on a screen ban until Easter if he doesn't redeem himself sharpish.

Womantheonlykind · 12/01/2019 21:08

At no point do these geniuses realise a mother's right and obligation to police her child's space.

Chumps.
