Got stared at in the restroom

Another day, another male who feels entitled to use women's spaces. Responses all support the male's "right" to be there, discount the woman's obvious discomfort with the male's presence.

Wow that’s wild because the first time I heard front bottom was right here on good old mumsnet

In fact just searched it as a term and it comes up eleventy billion times on the eleventy billion ‘what shall I call my daughter’s bits’ threads

but go off, I guess

again, why have solidarity with women when you could be having a go at Americans I guess

GrinitchSpinach · 13/01/2019 13:30

And another small sign that this world is for men and women have to be careful.

Yes, that's exactly why I posted it. It's the thing someone said upthread (sorry don't remember who) about this being an act of dominance disguised as "rights for the oppressed." And man-dominates-women-and-children is a really, really, really old story.

Meet the new boss; same as the old boss.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with saying bathroom or restroom but who the hell says front bottom? I've never heard anyone say that here in the UK?

NotTerfNorCis · 13/01/2019 13:19

Eh? Only TRAs say 'front bottom' and Americans are leading the way there.

MadgeMidgerson · 13/01/2019 13:09

I love how this thread is now taking potshots at North American’s for saying restroom and bathroom

Brits sound like twats when you say front bottom, you are hardly in a position to criticise how others say things

glad to see people focusing on the real issues here

Needmoresleep · 13/01/2019 11:49

That mother was almost thinking how glad she was that she did not leave her child to go to the "restroom" alone.

Next time she won't even consder it. So another duty on her, whilst he DH is still at the table enjoying his beer. Another small loss of independence for her child. And another small sign that this world is for men and women have to be careful.

Do they not realise that when they look completely male, and masculine, and like a man dressed up in women's clothes, it sometimes takes some time for a woman to process what the fuck is a man doing in here? Oh wait, is he trans? I can't figure it out...All the while whilst staring. And too right. I mean, for fucks sake, are we as women not even allowed to raise our eyes at a transwomen in case we somehow "intimidate" them whilst somewhere that is supposed to be a safe place for us??

Katvonbatshitmermaid · 13/01/2019 10:54

Restroom and bathroom really make me smirk. Being a northern woman (therefore male) I prefer calling a spade a spade and a toilet a bog or a shitter.
Grin

We are still allowed to look at trans people are we? Or should we demurely cast our eyes down? Don't some cultures expect women to do that with men?

But yes, it must have been terrifying, the thought of what this female bodied person with a small child might have done. I mean they might have even, I dunno, said words or something. Like "erm, I've got the right restroom yeah? This is the ladies?"

Then the person saying they couldn't eat, because of "the look". What a drama queen. Get over yourself.

Unrelated, but makes me happy....
I gave Boris Johnson a Paddington stare once. He looked down. It was a proper mum hard look of crossness.

OlennasWimple · 13/01/2019 10:30

The author comes across as a complete drama llama - already nervous before the bathroom incident aka looking for something to write about online for Reddit upvotes complain about

merrymouse · 13/01/2019 09:29

sackrifice I was also being sarcastic. I know this is normal terminology for a toilet in the US and I think Canada. However I think terms like ‘rest room’ avoid the reasons that we use a toilet. This is particularly relevant here as men and women use toilets differently.

AnyOldPrion · 13/01/2019 09:27

to use the threat of implied sexual violence

Would any woman read that post and think there was any implication of sexual violence from the mother in this situation?

And Datun is spot on (as usual) when she picked out the “freaked out cis” phrase. These people enjoy the feeling of power it gives them to be seen as different and thus intimidating.

GaraMedouar · 13/01/2019 09:26

I have a young daughter, I would behave exactly the same as the mother in this scenario. That's what mothers do.

merrymouse · 13/01/2019 09:20

the vast majority of genetic women aren't a threat to trans women.

Women are concerned about men. Although it’s usually possible to tell somebody’s sex it’s very difficult to know their gender identity. How do you know that a stranger is a trans woman?

sackrifice · 13/01/2019 09:16

Lucky to have a rest room. I've never worked anywhere that had one for women or men. What do people do there, read magazines or sleep? I think if there had ever been a rest room in my work place I'd have fallen asleep and not gone back to work after my break

Not sure if this is a genuine weird post or whatnot but a restroom is what they call public toilets in the USA.

FairfaxAikman · 13/01/2019 09:11

"Avoided eye contact" and "bolted"

Hmmmmm it's almost like hey knew they shouldn't be there 🤔

sackrifice · 13/01/2019 08:34

The case you have brought up was two women drunkenly groping the trans person.

Allegedly.

merrymouse · 13/01/2019 08:29

Lucky to have a rest room

Agree. But sad to have all these rooms with baths and beds but no toilets.

ALittleBitofVitriol · 13/01/2019 07:34

On the feminism and women's rights board, no less.

ALittleBitofVitriol · 13/01/2019 07:33

I love it how between a mother with her child and a male person intruding in the women's bathroom, the mother is the one accused of being threatening and 'implied sexual violence'

D A R V fucking O.

ChattyLion · 13/01/2019 07:20

So ‘genetic woman’ as a descriptor Hmm
People can’t change their genetics, genetics dictates their sex, making them male or female.
How anyone presents their appearance, what sex stereotyping they want to convey in that, or not is up to them and that’s fine. Genetics will always stay the same despite hormones and body modification, clothes hairdos, make up or lack of.

Why should (genetically- defined) men (which would include transwomen) get to dictate to (genetically-defined) women (which would include transmen) what rights to privacy, safety and dignity they are allowed to have in confined spaces like female/women’s/ladies public toilets? These spaces are Intended as, and are used as, a single sex space. Ie for the use only of women and girls, including transmen.

DayAfterTomorrow · 13/01/2019 05:32

Crikey. If we all stopped eating whenever anyone of the opposite sex looked at us, the diet industry would fold!

And of course, of fucking course the friend absolutely nailed it with

...she's just a freaked out cis

He knows. He absolutely knows the woman was intimidated.
