If you haven't heard of Alok, they are a friend of Travis Alabanza They are also a performance artist and are GNC. A friend of mine posted something Alok had posted on IG in solidarity with their suffering, basically, and it interested me.

The post was a picture of themselves in a pink bikini. They said the photo had been empowering to take and that it hurt that people were using it to ridicule them. They've been sent threats.

Now whilst no one deserves to be threatened and certainly not for being gender non-conforming, I'm interested that Alok has had such huge outpouring of support and attention. It fascinates me in the first place that the most empowering thing Alok could think to do was wear a feminine sexy outfit. It just shows how much people have absorbed the current message that the female body is (supposedly) one's greatest currency and the ultimate thing one can display to get status Hmm. Also is speaks volumes that to Alok, they ridicule they have experienced for what is, let's face it, a fairly inflammatory photo, is a severe form of oppression, with the trans ideology generally supporting the notion that society must be dismantled and changed to protect victims of it. Never mind things like child rape or fgm or domestic abuse, which really gets very little attention online. Never mind, too that Alok is an extremely hairy and very male looking individual who doesn't in all honesty look good in the clothing they've chosen to wear however kind one is trying to be (more than that I actually think they look pretty intimidating. From where I'm sitting anyway)

I just thought his post was worth a share. It does raise issues about how people perceive women in society and what is valued about us.

gender 😀

The comments about girls are really disturbing - not art, not non gender conforming but certainly predatory.

hipsterfun · 10/01/2019 21:00

What I find baffling is how much positive reaction these obvious attention-seekers get.

That’s a whole bunch of people giving to receive, imo (“One day, it could be meeeeeee!”).

gendercritter · 10/01/2019 19:42

A long day at work, a nice cup of tea and a peruse on mumsnet and now I can’t I unsee that photo

My first reaction is Grin and 'sorry!'

But it's genuinely not pleasant is it? I feel slightly violated when I look at his photos. There's a hostility there. The photos are almost an act of aggression or provocation. I feel really uncomfortable

That blog is enormously disturbing. I wish I hadn't read it

Slothslothsloth · 10/01/2019 19:26

What I find baffling is how much positive reaction these obvious attention-seekers get. There are so many genuinely good causes to support and people who could do with a helping hand. Is it because it's really easy to fire off a cooing adulatory comment on social media, as opposed to doing something really useful

It’s such a mystery. People actually donate to their patreons and their ridiculous funds (e.g. Travis Alabanzas taxi finds) so they must really think this stuff is worthwhile. It doesn’t make any sense.

Datun · 10/01/2019 19:22

Alok is best friends with Travis Alabanza who was outraged when the sales assistant at top shop said he couldn't change with the 13-year-old girls as they were in a state of undress. Travis took to Twitter and made them change the rules. Travis identifies as a 15-year-old girl on nights out.

Fifteen. Very specific.

terryleather · 10/01/2019 19:17

I'm pretty sure that Magdalen Berns has a video featuring Alok, thinks it's the one about non-binary identities?

heavens

I'm not sure the S&B gang would sanction that look

terryleather · 10/01/2019 19:06

And here they are channeling their inner Freddy Krueger curtesy of extra long arms...

Strange that I would really like Alok and admire what he does/his style/his creativity with fashion/his fearlessness in breaking gender boundaries... if only I had never seen a single word he’d written or said...

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 10/01/2019 19:03

that is not a nice swimming costume

and of course stuffed bra cups on a male chest are just offensive

we're in parody territory aren't we?

Alok should get Alokself over to Style and Beauty stat

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 10/01/2019 19:01

Fuck off, Alok, you exhibitionist wankstain.

terryleather · 10/01/2019 18:57

Yeah I'm afraid Alock is the one who said little girls were kinky and deviant and their parents had no idea.

Can anyone elaborate on this please?!

Slothslothsloth · 10/01/2019 18:19

Alok’s narcissism is so transparent. I get seriously distraught when I see the outpouring of support each one of their vapid, self-obsessed rants gets. Society should not be rewarding this level of navel-gazing.

littlbrowndog · 10/01/2019 18:09

Not sure the person has been maligned by feminists cos of being a non binary but the hideous taste in bikinis

Ffs that was a shocker

ChewyLouie · 10/01/2019 18:00

A long day at work, a nice cup of tea and a peruse on mumsnet and now I can’t I unsee that photo 😢 Each to their own and all that but this thread should come with a warning 😂
We are seeing what would normally be an alternative underground scene splashed over the internet. Everyone is trying to out do each other to gain attention and the resulting incoherent ramblings in the essay pre internet would largely have gone unnoticed. When the only alternative to the current insanity is to become sane and the next generation will attempt to shock by returning to normality.

Datun · 10/01/2019 17:42

Because no one is being liberated from the gender binary. They are being cemented in.

You want wear a dress and be feminine? You must be a woman, because only women do that.

You're a butch, gender nonconforming woman, who is attracted to women? You must be a man.

It takes women back centuries.

Mutakirorikatum · 10/01/2019 17:40

Me, me, me, feminism, me, me, look at me, feminism, it’s about me, look at me &c ad infinitum

MIdgebabe · 10/01/2019 17:37

IT Is strange to me that so much of what is said is fundamental to my idea of feminism

Yes, Women are so much more than their biology ( it’s just that all harm , From rape to assumption on cognitative ability comes from the biology)

YES, Liberatiom from geender binary is brilliant

YEs no one should be criminalised for their gender identity

Yes no one should be excluded from society by its design ( criminals excepted)

SO why oh why is there such a rift?
