Blocked on twitter!

I rarely post on twitter although I do use my real nameon there. It has recently come to my attention though that I have been blocked by several posters tweeting on trans issues - weird, as I don't think I have even liked anything particularly controversial! Am I on a list? Should I not use my real name on twitter? I am a bit taken aback actually as I really seems so bizarre to ban someone who hasn't even said anything.

I am blocked by Dr Jo Grady although I have never said anything remotely GC on twitter.

Yes, that's how I first found out I was blocked! I have no idea who she is.

Dr Grady hasn't blocked me. I'm not on the terf blocker list. I see however that Blaire White is.

hellandhairnets · 05/01/2019 13:59

MargueritaPink

Sorry, Dr Jo Grady, if you hadn't guessed from the later comments.

How on earth anyone who's supposed to be an academic can justify that level of ignorance, the blind following of a demonstrably false narrative, and refusal to even countenance more than one viewpoint without having the vapours is beyond me. It is cognitive dissonance writ large.

StarsAndWater · 05/01/2019 13:56

My personal Twitter account is on terfblocker block lists and I've been careful not to like or comment on anything remotely gender critical.
I think you just need to follow the 'wrong' kind of feminist account and you're on it.
I can't find the screenshot now, but at one point terfblocker tweeted that following an account (or was it liking a tweet from an account?) on their list would be enough to get you blocked.
Of course, then they'd block anyone interacting with you... And then with anyone interacting with them.
It's only a matter of time before everyone on Twitter is on it. HmmGrin

I don't really understand the history of block bots but it was discussed on a recent thread.

QuietContraryMary wrote:
"The context of block bot is that Mr. Billingham created 'block bot'. This had 'levels', where it was determined someone was a level 1, level 2, or level 3, in terms of their degree of nastiness. So more people were blocked in level 1 than level 2 than level 3.

Anyway, this quickly ran into shit as people were squabbling about who should be blocked.

Mr. Billingham, then posting as @oolon, or @ool0n, got some serious legal heat for the bot

www.breitbart.com/europe/2015/03/20/bbc-featured-block-bot-runs-into-legal-trouble/

The Kilgore Sprout account was created presumably to be more anonymous while doing Social Justice Warrioring.

This account seems to date from January 2016, possibly earlier

At some point mid-2018 I think, this account got banned from Twitter as it was basically dedicated to doxing & harassing feminists.

He set up various replacements with similar names despite being banned from Twitter. He is quite keen on banning feminists for the same 'ban evasion', strangely enough.

He (as Sprout) is the official author of the @unblock_list, which runs off a very low-powered computer, a Raspberry Pi, twitter.com/unblock_list/status/1036985976193785856 Mr. Billingham is a performance engineer who is (or was? seems to have been removed from his employers' experts' list) paid to enhance the efficiency of software, so running a database off a very low-power, low-cost device is the sort of thing you'd expect.

The unblock_list is related to Billingham's original 'block bot' in that it tracks people blocked on Twitter, however it links to 'blocktogether', which is a third party tool."

There are a number of mass 'terf block' lists. These are run by different people and others can then sign up to them.
On a previous thread, it was discovered that some twitter accounts were unknowingly on a number of lists despite having had very little interactions.
This information would not be known so its possible to be interacting on a twitter thread and not know that you can't see part of the conversation.

Funkyfunkybeat12 · 05/01/2019 13:37

Even Sally Hines doesn’t use Terf-blocker (or if she does, it’s of a milder form).
Academia on twitter now seems to be awash with people like Dr Grady. Traits: claims to be feminist, makes repeated claims generalising ‘all men’ but refuse point blank to recognise structural link, publicly bully/undermine feminists who do speak out, play on sexist stereotypes yet claim it’s a ‘feminist act’ bc everything a woman does is feminist, dismiss female concerns as ‘terfy’. I could go on. Other examples include Dr Charlotte Lydia Riley, Dr Fern Riddell, Dr Ellie Mackin and many more. Usually with a v large following too, so can do serious damage when they turn on others for ‘wrongthink’

Funkyfunkybeat12 · 05/01/2019 13:28

It’s pathetic. Especially when people who are academics use it. I am blocked by Dr Jo Grady although I have never said anything remotely GC on twitter. She is in her mid-30s and behaves like she is circa 13 on there so no great loss, but she holds an elected union position yet blocks loads of colleagues, some of whom may have voted for her.
Think about it: there are lots of forms of abuse on twitter- homophobia, breathtaking misogyny, racism, classism- I could go on. But the one thing that these dimwits cannot tolerate is gender-critical feminism. They have no mass-blockings of any other type of people. And not just GC feminism, but anyone who ever followed an account that may or may not have said something. It’s staggering.

R0wantrees · 05/01/2019 13:24

If it's possible to make a mass block on that particular link then maybe that's what has been done.

It will more likely be the settings of the individual twitter accounts, which mass 'terf' block lists they are signed upto and also which settings they have used on the block list itself.

recently · 05/01/2019 13:20

It’s a bit sinister really. The TRA dont want us to do or say certain things
Exactly. I actually follow a lot of people I don't normally agree with (including Trump!) as I don't want to live in a bubble. I want to hear differing opinions. It seems that if we even want to hear what GC people say we are deemed dangerous!

Welcome to the club. It's not an exclusive one, I am afraid.

MargueritaPink · 05/01/2019 13:16

I'm blocked by Rachel McKinnon. Who is "Dr Jo"?

Stardustinmyeyes · 05/01/2019 13:13

Marguerite Pink, i followed that link too and I'm blocked. Although I followed another link on the same thread and I'm not blocked on that one.
If it's possible to make a mass block on that particular link then maybe that's what has been done.

hellandhairnets · 05/01/2019 13:04

I've only been blocked by anyone since commenting on the Rachel McKinnon/Martina stuff so that clearly put me on a list. Oh and got something 'liked' by Kathleen Stock so that could be it too. Certainly I'm blocked by that Dr Jo idiot academic person and have never interacted with her in my life. It really does only seem to be in the last couple of weeks or so.

MargueritaPink · 05/01/2019 12:37

I've never tweeted or re-tweeted anything and I'm blocked by someone I've never heard of until I saw a link to their twitter feed on another thread and discovered I'm blocked.

autumnboys · 05/01/2019 11:38

I realised In the last week that I’ve been blocked by several people I’ve never interacted with. I’ve never liked or re-tweeted anything GC, mostly because I use my real name on Twitter & I am easy to find at both work & the school where I serve as Governor. So, it did seem to be based on who I follow. It’s a bit sinister really. The TRA dont want us to do or say certain things & now it seems that even thinking about it gets you blocked.

R0wantrees · 05/01/2019 08:28

there used to be a way of checking which block lists you're on, but I can't remember how

Isn't it Sprout who runs the 'what block lists am I on' bot?

People using it would also be giving up information / data.

R0wantrees · 05/01/2019 08:22

I have a Twitter account but have never tweeted, liked a tweet or responded to one. Still, I'm also blocked by many of the TRAs. I can only conclude that the mass-blocking tools the TRAs use operate partially or largely based on whom you follow as well.

There is the option for some people using a mass 'terf' blocklist to block people who are simply following a designated number of people already on the list.
This would be automatic and determined by the settings available & then chosen.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 04/01/2019 00:08

I don’t tweet at all but do follow all the ‘usual suspects’ regarding GC stuff so I’m amazed I don’t appear to be blocked yet... odd.

tubspreciousthings · 04/01/2019 00:03

You're in good company @recently - there used to be a way of checking which block lists you're on, but I can't remember how

SirVixofVixHall · 03/01/2019 22:21

I was blocked because of who I follow too. I follow all sorts of people, for varying reasons, many of whom are not GC , but the blocker is all part of the no debate tactic. People can’t challenge what they don’t see.

ScipioAfricanus · 03/01/2019 22:06

I was blocked before I’d tweeted anything - presumably on the blocking list because I follow GC accounts and/or had liked a GC tweet.

It does prove what a weird world some of them must be living in with no one disagreeing with anything they say.

VickyEadie · 03/01/2019 22:04

Yes, Jack posted very recently her (@MNHQ - not sure about Jack's pronouns these days, but have seen her respond positively to being referred to as her, so...) bemusement about being blocked this week.

SlightAggrandising · 03/01/2019 22:01

I think Jack Monroe is blocked by the Challenor list so... ¯\(ツ)/¯

recently · 03/01/2019 21:46

Can I ask what you posted OP?
Nothing on trans issues! In fact, nothing controversial at all. I suppose it must be because I follow GC feminists.
