Hannah Graf was on the program last week.

Interesting that the Sunday Times articles critical of Mermaids and Stonewall etc don't seem to have been discussed

Hannah Graf and her husband, Jake are patrons of Mermaids.

Actually, having read your post R0wan, isn't Dominic West just revealing he doesn't believe TWAW? Because he doesn't think a woman should be Bond as it's "gender specific", but a TW can.

"They’d be ideal because they can do everything."

So transphobic Dominic.

from the extended artice and context for the remarks,

"Given that he owns an actual castle, it isn’t hard to see why people go on about how posh West is. He’s so fed up with it that when I apologise in advance for asking the “inevitable question”, about James Bond, he looks thrilled. “Oh, I thought you were going to talk about Eton.” West’s name has been touted for the Bond role, so who would he give the job to? “Me,” he flashes back, with a mischievous twinkle. “I think we need an older Bond.” Would he take it if offered? “Of course I would, but I don’t think I will be.” If he had to stake £100 on who the next one will be, I begin to ask, which way would he … but West breaks into laughter. “Well, I did try, actually. I thought, this is easy money, Idris [Elba] is definitely going to get it.”

He isn’t joking. A couple of years ago, West was so sure Elba was a shoo-in that he sent his nephew to the bookies to put on a bet. “I had no inside information, but I was convinced, so I thought I might as well cash in. I was going to put a lot of money on it.” How much? “As much as I could.” But the bookies had capped the amount anyone could bet on Elba, “and the odds were pretty rubbish, so I didn’t”.

How about the idea of the next Bond being a woman? The laughter fades. “I suppose so.” I point out that his expression suggests otherwise. “Well …I think some of these things are gender specific. So I don’t see it myself.” Then another thought occurs. “Maybe a transgender Bond would be cool.”

Thinking out loud, he goes on, “Yes, there’s a very cool woman who’s the wife of an actor in [West’s latest film] Colette, who is a captain in the electrical engineers, the highest-ranking transgender soldier in the army. She’s done two tours of Afghanistan. She’s a beautiful blonde girl who could be Bond, yes. That’s actually a brilliant idea. They should have a transgender Bond because there are a lot of transgender people in the army. They’d be ideal because they can do everything. That’s a great idea! A transgender Bond.”

Though before Barbara Broccoli casts her, she might bear in mind that West doesn’t watch many actors at work. He hasn’t seen any of the headline dramas of this year — McMafia, Bodyguard, Killing Eve. Can he name a single TV series he’s watched this year? “Erm … Bake Off and Strictly with the kids.”

also from the interview,

His wife crops up a lot in West’s interviews, usually because he’s quoting her complaining about whatever he said in the last one. A lovely weekend in Sussex, for example, was “wrecked” when they pulled over for petrol and saw a newspaper headline about how much he’d hated Eton. “She was very cross, my old teachers were very upset,” and he had to write lots of apologetic letters. So now he’s trying to be one of those “clever people” who manage to talk to the press without ever saying anything. “Yes, it’s a pain in the arse, and I keep saying the wrong thing.” If it were down to him, would he never give another interview? “Hell, yes!” He pauses. “But I mean, I do enjoy it. Which is the problem,” he chuckles. “I love talking about myself. I wish I could just shut the f* up.”

Perhaps the 'agendas' to consider are that of Radio 4 Broadcasting House & today's guests, novelist Dreda Say Mitchell & presenter Petroc Trelawny.

If you want a female Bond do Modesty Blaise properly.

AspieAndProud · 23/12/2018 12:26

Hollywood can signal it’s virtues till the cows come home but it is a business.

James Bond is one of the most successful movie franchises in history. Change the character and nobody will watch it.

Nobody is going to spend millions of dollars making a movie nobody wants to watch.

Look at Marvel. Over the last few years the comics have changed Thor to a woman, Iron Man to a Hispanic teenage girl and the Hulk to a Korean. Sales plummeted.

And the movies have stuck to the original characters and made billions in the process.

R0wantrees · 23/12/2018 12:23

Paddy O'Connell introduced this segment on BH after discussion of front page stories.

"let's go into your own agenda. All year all our guests, whom we thank, on behalf of all the ones who've appeared get to pick their own agenda We do not ask for any selections.
Dreda from anywhere in the news take it away...."

(Reviewing the Sunday news coverage: novelist Dreda Say Mitchell, presenter Petroc Trelawny and historian Linda Colley.)

"Yes Nothing even Giles Coren picked up on the fuckedupness of that."

Thats' good to know! I didn't see anything about it at the time - mind you I wasn't really looking. Glad it was generally seen as fucking horrible.

Bowlofbabelfish · 23/12/2018 12:17

Could spread to other franchises... the Bourne Gender Identity?

Yes I think we have a winner here. Trebles all round!

MinesaBottle · 23/12/2018 12:16

Obviously he’s missed the fact that Hannah Graf is a soldier, not an actor...Bond’s not a documentary!

Bowlofbabelfish · 23/12/2018 12:15

You only live twice (as long as deadnaming You is illegal.)

Bowlofbabelfish · 23/12/2018 12:14

Well the plot line could be interesting. B(l)ond takes on a secret cabal of the most threatening people ever to exist, perhaps they are a secret society with a catchy four letter acronym beginning with T and rhyming with smurf?

Q, having killed all the other letters, provides bond with various gadgets. Ninja stars shaped like Woke Cookies. X ray goggles to see those gendered souls. Etc.

Need a title:

Dr. No licence?

VickyEadie · 23/12/2018 12:08

Today, in you couldn't make it up:

They should have a transgender Bond because there are a lot of transgender people in the army.” Are there "lots"?

Loving this comment by nauticant:

It's now time for a woman to play James Bond so the right thing to do is to get a man to play a woman to play James Bond.

AngryAttackKittens · 23/12/2018 12:05

OK, so to start with, Bond is not in the army...

And yes, is a reprehensible person in ways that would not be deemed acceptable or aspirational in a female Bond. Which is handy since that's not West was suggesting!

Plenty of talented British actresses he could have suggested, but I guess they lack that certain something (what could it be?), and women in films are just decorations so what does he care if his proposed LadyBond has any acting talent or experience?

And yes, Skyfall was vomit worthy.

Knicknackpaddyflak · 23/12/2018 12:04

Trying to imagine Bond doing secret service work while still keeping up with duties on Twitter.

Maybe Q has a gadget to keep the Woke Yorkshire Police on speed dial and they go round to the evil criminal mastermind's house and give him a warning for misgendering.

sevensatsumas · 23/12/2018 12:02

Aren't studios/directors allowed to just hire the best actor for a part any more - whoever that may be?

Yes Nothing even Giles Coren picked up on the fuckedupness of that.

Used as a vehicle just to show EVEN MORE sexy ladies being sexy.
I think that the rest of it would fade into the background.
Didn't finish that thought properly in my post.

So much of James Bond is super-rapey. The bit with severine in skyfall was revolting > he knew she had been prostitituted as a child and for years, and that he needed her to help him escape. Despite her traumatic past he decides to fuck her and she is in no position to say no. If she says no he might withdraw his help, he might react badly (there is no-one else around) and of course he's a violent man. I don't know if the people who made it even realised how that all looked from a female perspective. If it was intentional to tell that and have him fuck her anyway and to present it as admirable fun and romantic even than that is seriously fucked up.
