Apologies if this has already been posted. Did a quick search and didn't find anything.

Michael Conroy attended and recorded a mermaids training session. It's hair raising listening.

I believe that someone is working on transcribing this, which will hopefully make it easier to analyse. But wanted to post it to make sure it hadn't been missed.

Schools for gender non conforming kids? That is crazy

You tell the toddlers that some boys like sparkles and some girls like cars and we should never criticize that. If they say something like boys can’t like pink, you explain to the child that is wrong. Then you let kids with similar interests play together regardless of sex.

Thingybob · 22/12/2018 01:15

The stonewall school report is very good.

Really? I would say it's complete rubbish.
It was all done via online self selection, there were no controls, no recording of sex, no accounting for co morbid conditions, non transparent methodology and many other criticisms

abundantly clear that children who are gender nonconforming or questioning their identity are extremely vulnerable to bullying and abuse

I think most people would agree with this from real life observations so no need for an expensive report from a Cambridge professor.

Do we try to fix the bullying?

I'm not sure that's possible. Gender non conforming kids are by definition a minority and bullying includes things like excluding the gender non conforming child.

When my son was about 7, he rejected the friendship of a gender non conforming child who wanted to play with him during breaktime and the Mother, who was a friend of mine, tried arranging after school play dates.

My son decided he didn't enjoy playing with this other child because he was 'boring' My son said he wanted to play football and this other child didn't or on the play dates he didn't want to play 'rubbish games like houses and cooking'. When he did go he usually ended up playing with the younger brother who had the cars and trains my son enjoyed. He wasn't trying to be unkind to this other boy but isn't it natural to prefer spending time with others that share similar interests?

What do you think? Was my son a homophobic bully or just being a normal child?

That's why I do think there is a role for a group like Mermaids but without all the gender rubbish. I'm all for the social aspect and believe it's [vital] that gender non conforming children get to meet others with similar interests so they can develop close friendships. In fact I would go further and set up schools exclusively for these kids.

Don't see how small children understanding that some people are referred to as men and some as women is the same as having an innate gender identity.

It's not the same, and if they had understood the papers they are citing, they'd know that. Children learn that they are either a boy or a girl, and that this is fixed, and they know that other children are also either boys or girls, and that is fixed, and that adults are either men or women, and that is fixed.

TRAs use this to show that everyone has a 'gender identity' by the age of about 3, which is obviously not true. What actually happens is that children have an understanding that there are two sexes, and that it is a permanent state (they understand that they won't wake up tomorrow and find that they have changed from a girl into a boy or vice versa). The average 3-year-old has a better understanding of this than the average TRA.

The stonewall school report is very good. To me it makes it abundantly clear that children who are gender nonconforming or questioning their identity are extremely vulnerable to bullying and abuse, tending to focus on themselves as individuals not fitting in, or their bodies being wrong in some way. Do we try to fix the bullying? Or collude in the belief that the bullied children are actually right that their bodies are the problem?

Needmoresleep · 21/12/2018 23:07

The idea that small children aged between 18 months and three have a fixed gender identity is scary.

I dont care what studies were quoted. Our experience with DD was that she changed her mind (in pretty gradual fashion) and her friendship group, between the ages of 8-10, having previously strongly identified as a boy.

But not part of any studies! And now a happy, healthy and popular 20 year old.

Even if SG would seem to deny that her journey is possible.

Its very creepy. Awful. If they had got their hands on my child when she was still primary aged, I assume they would have advocated for her to be mutilated and drugged

VickyEadie · 21/12/2018 22:56

And jelly babies?

ButteryParsnips · 21/12/2018 22:49

Don't see how small children understanding that some people are referred to as men and some as women is the same as having an innate gender identity. All it says is that children have been socialised into recognising labels and stereotypes. It also assumes that children's understanding of sex, gender and their own identity doesn't develop further after this phase.

ValWiggin · 21/12/2018 22:45

SG rewarded by HRH specifically for her contribution to the mental health sector ... when they so vehemently deny that trans has anything to do with MH. Interesting.

Just noticed, “ I stand with Mermaids” ??
I’d say Mermaids float gently and serenely rather than stand, which means the people who stand with them are Floaters.

starcrossedseahorse · 21/12/2018 16:51

Bloody sickening.

ChewyLouie · 21/12/2018 16:50

Expect we’ll hear the same old “lessons will be learnt” tripe in the coming decades. Same old shit.

feministfairy · 21/12/2018 16:45

I recall that Jimmy Savile had Royal approval / involvement, politicians approval including the PM, his own group of police officers meeting him regularly for coffee. It seems they have learnt very little.

HandsOffMyRights · 21/12/2018 16:41

Aye, SG rewarded by HRH for her contribution to her outstanding work.

In October 2017, the Mermaids CEO was invited to Buckingham Palace by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. Harry described Mermaid's work as 'amazing' and Green spoke to Pink News and Gaystar about her delight in being recognised by the Royal Family.

The Equality Minister, Penny Mordaunt and her civil servants have had more meetings with Mermaids than with women's groups. Mermaids is routinely consulted as an expert and of course the growth of the charity has its roots in lots of cash and trainign contracts from government - not the private sector.

I've just read the Parliamentary Enquiry on Kid's Company and the parallels are sickeningly too close for comfort - endorsements by royalty, close relationships with Whitehall, partners who are more interested in allying themselves with the Establishment than looking closely at what is going on.

I believe that another Kid's Company/Savile is coming to pass, but this time the Royals, Whitehall and government ministers can't say that they weren't told.

Flooffloof · 21/12/2018 10:48

Summat ffs

Flooffloof · 21/12/2018 10:48

they have received £6,000 worth of donations over 3 days and one of their supporters are mocking us over it

Didn't we raise 40k or something for the adult human female metro advert? As I recall they were all jealous af, even though the advert didn't actually cost that much probably and we were all told how many dv shelters it would run, or summer.

Needmoresleep · 20/12/2018 23:16

I initially read the title of this thread as someone recording mermaids having a fitness session. Press-ups perhaps, though no running. Aqua aerobics would make most sense.

R0wantrees · 20/12/2018 23:04

Its worth following the #IStandWithMermaids

& recognising the obvious flaw in this

It demonstrates how much money this charity and other's advocating for trans rights have, both public and private.

traceyracer · 20/12/2018 22:53

mermaids must be getting a lot of support from TRAs

Meant to add that I've known this to happen to two different 12 year olds, from different schools, after a gender/sex education lesson.

They went home and declared themselves both bi-sexual and non-binary. Luckily both forgot about it a week later
