Apologies if this has already been posted. Did a quick search and didn't find anything.

Michael Conroy attended and recorded a mermaids training session. It's hair raising listening.

I believe that someone is working on transcribing this, which will hopefully make it easier to analyse. But wanted to post it to make sure it hadn't been missed.

I'm actually shocked by the "poor effeminate boy doesn't get to sleep with girls" comment.

So tell the girls that their effeminate boy friend is actually a girl, gaslight them, confuse the fuck out of them instead.
Right.

Qcng · 22/12/2018 11:30

So if your 11 year old daughter had a male friend would he always be included when she socializes with friends. For example would he be invited to the sleep overs

Oh good grief. It's perfectly fine for a group of girls to not invite their male friend to sleep over with them while they are all beginning puberty.

It's not bullying and it's certainly not a hate crime. The male child will have plenty of opportunities with the boys if they are a well rounded child who is not taught they are actually a girl when the world doesn't actually believe that.

Mariotta · 22/12/2018 11:06

but it all changes once they get to secondary school

But it doesn't necessarily. My youngest (boy) has exactly the same core friendship group that he had when he was at primary school. And he's left uni now. It's mixed sex.

Datun · 22/12/2018 11:02

Loads of kids don't fit in, simply loads. And many of the kids who appear to fit in, will tell anyone who listens that they don't fit in either.

Reducing gendered expectations will allow for a far greater flow between these rigid gender boxes.

Separating gender nonconformity from gender conformity will eliminate the flow.

You're still falling into the trap of thinking that most girls like girly stuff and most boys like boys' stuff.

Let's remove these labels and expectations, and then see quite how many children fall in the middle.

OldCrone · 22/12/2018 10:55

So if your 11 year old daughter had a male friend would he always be included when she socializes with friends. For example would he be invited to the sleep overs?

So would you stop your child from having a friend of the opposite sex because of this 'problem'?

Pepvixen · 22/12/2018 10:48

Definitely Old Crone - what a completely bizarre suggestion.

OldCrone · 22/12/2018 10:47

I don't think GNC kids are particularly unusual in struggling to fit in at school.

And the solution is definitely not to isolate them even more by having a special school for them.

Pepvixen · 22/12/2018 10:38

GNC kids, nerdy kids, minority ethnic kids, disabled kids, musical kids - all sorts of people who often grow up to be the most interesting - sometimes struggle to fit into school friendship groups. Lots of those kids form friendships with people outside of school (eg through orchestra or church/temple/mosque). Agreed with something you said above about a group like mermaids for gnc kids minus the genderist ideology would be good. I don't think GNC kids are particularly unusual in struggling to fit in at school.

Thingybob · 22/12/2018 10:30

Some girls are accepted into male friendship groups - there have always been 'tomboys', and girls can be very open to a boy who wants to join their group. This is not the same as telling the boy that he is actually a girl.

Yes I know but I'll paraphrase the only sensible thing the Mermaids trainer said. Primary school teachers say it's all fine with children to mixing a forming friendship groups with members of the opposite sex but it all changes once they get to secondary school.

So if your 11 year old daughter had a male friend would he always be included when she socializes with friends. For example would he be invited to the sleep overs?

Any update on the transcript OP? I have a school teacher friend eager to read it....

Qcng · 22/12/2018 10:21

Ballet actually needs males doesn't it? To do the male ballet parts...

OldCrone · 22/12/2018 10:13

Thingybob

You seem to have a very narrow view of girls' interests. Not all girls like ballet, and boys can learn ballet too.

Also maybe the girls won't want him around as they perceive him as being different? Or are you saying the girls must accept him yet adult women do not have to accept that TWAW?

Pepvixen · 22/12/2018 10:10

A GNC boy should not be prevented from playing with girls. That's a completely different thing to TWAW, accepting such a boy at guides etc. Friendship groups form and fall apart all the time.

RedToothBrush · 22/12/2018 10:08

"The wrong side of science"

Epic

Thingybob · 22/12/2018 10:00

If a boy is happier playing with girls, why not let him play with girls

Because there will come an age when he won't be able to completely fit in with the girls, think girls ballet classes or joining groups like guides (I know they have recently changed)

Thingybob · 22/12/2018 09:55

Ha I'm happy to be both crazy and bonkers but don't worry I have no power or money so it won't come to fruition.

I agree medically altering children's bodies is cruel but it is also cruel to allow a child to be be isolated and lonely for large chunks of their childhood.

OldCrone · 22/12/2018 09:54

Assuming you are correct and it is all socialization, surely it would be easier to socialize the few gender non conforming kids to fit in rather than changing the way we socialize the other 95%?

Why can't we let children be who they are? And teach the bullies to be more accepting of those who are different. If a boy is happier playing with girls, why not let him play with girls?

What would be cruel is to tell him that because he likes girls' toys, that he is actually a girl.

teawamutu · 22/12/2018 09:37

I notice they're still using those utterly discredited suicide stats.

Completely disagree that GNC kids should be schooled separately. Bonkers idea. Schools need to have good anti-bullying policy and practice.

An update on the transcript. It's good to go, just making sure that Pencils and Orchid are happy with it and to get the go ahead from michael.

Thank you so much for all the hard work on this.

Mariotta · 22/12/2018 09:15

That's why I do think there is a role for a group like Mermaids but without all the gender rubbish.

Exactly. A group that wasn't promoting an extremist ideology and that conformed to safeguarding standards for GNC kids would be great and entirely deserving of public funds for a support network. That group is not Mermaids.

Thingybob · 22/12/2018 09:09

You tell the toddlers that some boys like sparkles and some girls like cars and we should never criticize that. If they say something like boys can’t like pink, you explain to the child that is wrong. Then you let kids with similar interests play together regardless of sex.

Your argument only stands up if you believe the differences between the sexes is all down to socialization, I don't, I believe there is a big biological element.

Assuming you are correct and it is all socialization, surely it would be easier to socialize the few gender non conforming kids to fit in rather than changing the way we socialize the other 95%?

I hope you agree that would be cruel.
