Sally Hines is writing female out of feminism- I'm terrified

I've just seen this on twitter. 'Female' is only something anti trans people say and is not relevant to feminism. What if feminism becomes undermined too? Are they trying to take our only weapon and safe place? Why try to take away the biological needs of women rather than add those of trans women? How can this person think they are qualified and justified in re-defining feminism to exclude something fundamental to the majority of women?

My blood ran cold when I saw it because Sally Hines is an academic receiving a lot of funding to do this research.

Jacob Rees Mogg obvs also a victim of patriarchy.... and probably also Mog the cat too...

merrymouse · 21/06/2019 08:37

I think A Kestrel for a Knave deserves its place as a modern classic and I don’t think that Barry Hines is exactly famous.

However, using Queer Theory - everyone is a victim of the patriarchy, oppression is subjective, language doesn’t mean anything - the characters in the novel are just as stuffed as women.

After all isn’t William Rees Mogg just as much a victim of the patriarchy in
his own way as Billy? Isn’t it financial determinism to say that Billy’s lack of money might impact on his ability to participate equally in society? How dare anyone suggest he might need specific resources or that the impact of poverty should be studied.

SunsetBeetch · 21/06/2019 06:48

If only we could manage to avoid Sally's Queer Theory nonsense.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 20/06/2019 22:24

No loss

KTara · 20/06/2019 21:32

I managed to avoid reading Kes

KTara · 20/06/2019 21:32

‘that is way above your pay grade’

  • to Kathleen Stock.
That is awfully rude and patronising. Not even a modicum of politeness. I would have expected more from a professor.
LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 20/06/2019 21:30

Writer of Kes I believe. I hated that bloody book at school.

GrumpyCatLives · 20/06/2019 21:28

I believe that Sally's dad was quite famous... nepotism at its worse obviously.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 20/06/2019 21:25

Her pronouncements are usually so garbled and such nonsense I thought it was a joke account at first.

aliasundercover · 20/06/2019 21:22

The only good thing about Sally Hines is that she is so thick and her arguments are so poor
Yep. I just clicked a few links and read some of 'her' stuff - is she really employed by universities?

merrymouse · 20/06/2019 20:17

So patronising.

'Little thing called fantasy' ugh, ugh, ugh.

We have reached the point where people are sincerely arguing that somebody's sexual fantasy of being a lesbian is the same as actually being a lesbian.

Taken to it's logical conclusion this line of thinking could have a devastating affect on nurses, firemen, policemen...

terryleather · 20/06/2019 19:57

Six titles by Hines.
Our national human rights institution reads Sally Hines.

Oh gawd, pass me the gin it's the endtimes....

terryleather · 20/06/2019 19:55

“English unfortunately doesn’t have a precise word for the German “Fachidiot,” a narrowly specialized person accomplished in his own field but a blithering idiot outside it.

I think maybe English could have a two name word definition...

ThePurported · 20/06/2019 19:49

Check out the Equality and Human Rights Commission's trans reading list:

The only good thing about Sally Hines is that she is so thick and her arguments are so poor that anyone with half a wit looks intelligent beside her.

NotTerfNorCis · 20/06/2019 15:47

A lesbian who has sex with a transwoman either isn't a lesbian (same-sex attracted) or is hating every minute of it.

Doyoumind · 20/06/2019 14:38

Sally's tone is disgusting. She makes me so angry. I wonder what she's like in person.

2BthatUnnoticed · 20/06/2019 13:58

The good doctor “hetsplaining” lesbianism to a lesbian...

It’s also a movement that will break the largest legally protected class of employees and render that legal protection meaningless.

I’m sure corporate boards have realised.

Next up: trans-racial. For the same reason.

Antibles · 27/04/2019 18:24

Why, why is this happening at all?

Is this what happens when a few billionaires want their new gender identities validating? And then another billionaire mistakenly agrees with the TWAW claim, thinking it's like the LGB rights issue and supports it too. And then the MRAs see how handy it could be, and all the other AGPs see the advantage of claiming womanhood. I struggle to believe it and then I think, actually maybe they are that powerful. Money talks. It is a bizarrely top-down movement.

LangCleg · 27/04/2019 11:48

But, what's also clear from that thread, is that this is about engineering a social trend, not responding to one that's arisen organically. This is the "queering the classroom" bit of the No Outsiders programme. It's not about supporting those who reject "the binary", it's about actively trying to break it as a concept for everyone.

Absolutely, 100%, this. Great post, m'dear.

AnyOldPrion · 27/04/2019 09:39

Thanks for the thread link above.

To briefly return to this:

”males who feel compelled to comply with feminine stereotypes’”

I’m fascinated by the process by which so many of us have arrived in a position where we avoid using the words that are demanded of us. Initially I insisted on omitting the space, but now I can’t generally bring myself even to use the space-free word. I either use “transitioner” with an initialled description of direction before it (also banned here, I believe) or more often: “men, however they identify”. It pleases me to lump these aggressive transitioners in with all men. Sick of being bullied.

2BthatUnnoticed · 26/04/2019 23:27

*of

2BthatUnnoticed · 26/04/2019 23:27

It’s happening because of people like Jennifer Pritzker and others - because rich, powerful people can make a lot of money from it. Those interests are funding the “re-education” if the masses.

ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASaving · 26/04/2019 22:38

I would love the answer to that question. We have so many bits of the puzzle, but not that one.
