They were very involved in Roller Derby in Manchester, particularly with queer and trans kids who skate. Manchester Roller Derby have had to release a statement about their actions.

No one is getting custodial sentences for anything at the moment. Other political issues are overshadowing this but it’s an easy time to be any kind of criminal.
A former colleague was heavily involved in sexual abuse legislation and prosecutions. His attitude was always that there was the abuser at the centre and then rings of people who helped the abuser with some knowledge of what the abuser was doing. Often these people were women. My feeling is that the abusers need locked away permanently, there’s no rehabilitation for that kind of mind. But those that aid and abet need strong sentences to solidify in the public’s mind that you do not want to be the thin end of the wedge.
But while there’s no money to investigate let alone sentence never mind support the victims we will continue with this kind of relaxation.

Paedos are everywhere.

The Home Secretary recently said that the National Crime Agency says there are at least 80,000 people in the UK who present some kind of sexual threat to children online.

There are 66,000 paedophiles on the sex offenders register at November 2017 and 14,000 who have been arrested, are under investigation or have been convicted of child sex crimes since then.

One might ask why there is a push to dilute, rather than strengthen, child safeguarding in this country.

A google search for ‘Councillor indecent images’ brings up cases from as far north as Perth in Scotland and as far south as Bognor Regis.

I was mistaken about the primary school teacher/Tory councillor from Trafford though - he did receive a prison sentence - www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/matthew-sephton-richard-willis-jailed-14208825

Paedos are everywhere.

I’m glad MCR roller derby are now looking into safeguarding courses and DBS checks etc. All hobbies/activities with voluntary staff need to consider the same. Not that it would prevent this particular case.

BettyDuMonde · 16/12/2018 12:40

Were they blokes, betty

Yep. Here’s one of them (from 2015): www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-34490347

Almost of the Mail comments on the Nixon-Corfield story are ‘if this was a bloke, they would’ve gone to prison’ but that’s just not true. Sadly.

WeRiseUp · 16/12/2018 12:34

I think we should have a thread dedicated to people involved in local politics, public sector workers like police, and quangos who are involved in child abuse images - particularly those involved in developing policies.

Too many good people feel unworthy of getting into politics and too many dodgy people see it as a game to play to their own dodgy, perverted advantage.

DandelionsAreNotLions · 16/12/2018 12:27

*BettyDuMonde

There have been several local councillors found with indecent images in MCR in the last few years. One was a school teacher and a councillor.

None received custodial sentences.*

Betty do you remember any details or names? I don't . which worries me , am I getting blase about this crime?
Its so fucking common. is a scandal that should more headlines, outragd and coverage not less.

Kismetjayn · 16/12/2018 12:25

True re images. But I know quite a few people in sexual abuse support as well as myself who have been abused by women so I just can't consider it 'microscopically small'- just caught less due to the same nuances. Women are weak, women are easily led & exploited, women don't have the same sexual appetite etc. Yes most predators are men, but I wonder if that's down to a sense of entitlement that women do not have so do not act on.

And yes coercive control is obviously a huge mitigating factor but as she privately stated what she personally got out of the images, that tells me it's more 'birds of a feather' than purely made to obey abusive boyfriend. I think a woman who didn't want to do it but was made to would make statements more in the way of 'i like to make you happy' more than the ones she did make.

DandelionsAreNotLions · 16/12/2018 12:19

Women do do it too. And it's not pleasant but they should be treated in exactly the same way because it causes exactly the same amount of harm.

Yes male-born "women" do but it is microscopically rare in actual women.
If this Laura had been treated the same way the sentence would probably be the same but no one would know about it. No headlines, no discussion. Its worrying how common possessing child abuse images is. Imagine how many are not caught if thousands are being prosecuted.

R0wantrees · 16/12/2018 12:19

Women do do it too. And it's not pleasant but they should be treated in exactly the same way because it causes exactly the same amount of harm.

When women are involved (which is very rarely) they should of course be prosecuted just as males are.
Where there is also evidence of coersive control and abuse by a male partner, this is relevent and should not be denied as being a relevent factor. It does not mitigate responsibility.

What is also true is that women who are guilty of such appalling crimes are often not treated in the same way as males, since they receive more coverage and often more condemnation.

Its a complex situation requiring nuance.

R0wantrees · 16/12/2018 12:14

Nothing I'm not guessing or suggesting.

There is a recognised epidemic of viewing sexually abusive images of children. This is overwhelmingly a male crime.
It seems possible that amongst those involved a male-born person/s with a GRC may be prosecuted at some point.
It concerns me that data and reportings are accurate when child protection is involved.

Kismetjayn · 16/12/2018 12:13

But doesn't the 'poor weak controlled woman' perpetuate that stereotype? She said those things. She named what she liked about the child abuse images. Being abused herself, doesn't mean she didn't find the images gratifying and there's no way of telling if she did or not but she owned a lot of them and stated privately her enjoyment.

Women do do it too. And it's not pleasant but they should be treated in exactly the same way because it causes exactly the same amount of harm.

Bittermints · 16/12/2018 12:09

So just to say straight out what clearly several of us have been wondering, she is a biological female? I wondered because this is such an incredibly rare crime for a woman to commit. Utterly, utterly despicable. How anyone can live with themselves having had any part in causing such suffering to children is beyond me.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 16/12/2018 12:08

I think guessing this may be a male is off the mark, although I undertsand why, as this is such an unusual crime for a woman + female stats are being skewed hugely by men who self ID as women.

The feminist issue here I think is whether a man who did this would have gone to prison. Whether it would even have been reported let alone so lengthily.

R0wantrees · 16/12/2018 12:08

Someone I know knows her, and her social circle, and has long viewed her as highly vulnerable, and believes she was indeed being coercively controlled. If you are a strong person yourself, and haven't experienced what that can be like, I suspect it is very difficult to imagine.

important video recently released by Mumsnet & Women's Aid about coercive control:

CrazyToast · 16/12/2018 12:07

@Rowantrees If someone had a GRC and was born male but had legal recognition requiring they were treated as female and therefore this fact could not be disclosed, how would it be recorded & reported?

It wouldn't be disclosed or reported anywhere. To disclose it publicly would be a crime.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 16/12/2018 12:06

kesstrel

It could well be the case.

I am very aware that people get pissed off with the double standard where men who do this are condemned but with women it is seen that "excuses" are looked for.

However, it certainly seems to be true that very very few female child sex offenders act alone.

BettyDuMonde · 16/12/2018 12:06

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/paedophiles-child-sex-images-download-prison-sentences-length-increase-solicitor-general-a8481276.html

From August.

"Statistics show that less than a quarter of the 2,528 people sentenced for making, distributing or publishing child sex abuse images in 2017 were jailed, with almost half handed suspended sentences, and one in five given community orders."

They would almost all have been men.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 16/12/2018 12:01

PP asking why she didn't go to prison.

There is no suggestion I think that she made the images herself > that she was abusing children.

From what I have read, she got a lot harsher punishment than men who "just" have images.
Police and prosecutors have said that there are so many men (NAMALT) downloading these images that they aren't going to bother prosecuting any more. The stats are very high.

I think that this is in the news because it is a very unusual crime for a woman to commit. A man doing this would not be in the news and ?would not be in prison. I might have a google on stats.

The inclusion of it in the news adds to the idea that "women do it too" which is not helpful.

Any download or view of a child being abused adds to the demand for this material and therefore results in more children being abused. Plus people escalate. I thikn they should ALL be prosecuted and sent to prison for a fuckign long time.

Also the roller derby thing is interesting > they were staright out with reassurance. Otehr recent case where a transgender male was convicted of MUCH worse crimes, and involved with the scouts, a diving club (i think it was) and a wheelchair basketball club, no reassurances were forthcoming from any of the orgs which was really fucking weird.

there are some double standards going on here for sure.

Glad she is in prison and hope the boyfriend gets serious time as well.

BettyDuMonde · 16/12/2018 11:53

Fucking hell. I know this person (just a little bit, shared social circles) she used to date someone else I know.

Why was she so involved with lgbtq, as a woman in a relationship with a man, presumably a straight woman?

She’s bisexual. The person I met her through is another woman.

R0wantrees · 16/12/2018 11:52

Mirror coverage here, with judge's summing up,

Sentencing Judge Hilary Manley told Nixon-Corfield: “You embarked on a relationship with this man when you were on an extremely low ebb in your life.

"You have suffered and executed your own frailty and I find you were devastated during the course of his suggestion that you become involved in the possession and distribution of those vile images.

''However you are an intelligent thinking person. You did not have to do any of the things asked if you and you did not have a gun held to you head either literally or metaphorically - you were a willing participant."

DandelionsAreNotLions · 16/12/2018 11:30

I'm guessing the sentence is on the lenient side because she is going to be useful to prosecute the ex-partner as yet unnamed.
Sentences for possession of child abuse images are way too low across the board. I have read of many that are suspended or very short. There are so many they hardly make headlines now. Awful. Only reason this is a headline is how rare women's sexual crime is/was.

Manchester Roller Derby has been having a very queer and male intake for a few years. I know women who have left because of roller derby including biological males. Can women have nothing at all to ourselves?
The simplest and most helpful thing they can do for safeguarding is just exclude males again ..
