Long time lurker, first time poster. This link was shared on one of my networks today and it’s very useful - unpicking various claims by trans activists including that half of trans children attempt suicide or that sex attacks by ‘never happen’.

The idea and claim has been shared, re-tweeted and absorbed by many people, including those with political influence.
(the libdem LGBT+ twitter account pushed this a lot, especially after EH withdrew her blog piece)

They literally don't care at all whether or not any of these claims are true so long as they are picked up. Fake news is news.

beingmumanddad · 13/12/2018 17:12

^^ agreed!

Safeguarding comes second
Science comes second
Equality comes second
Education comes second

I would amend that to:

Safeguarding comes second.
Science comes third.
Equality comes fourth.
Education comes fifth.
Women come last.

*When I hear talk about re-introducing another form of section 28 for the trans community, I think – you’ve got to be kidding,”

I think this 'talk' came from the blog that Emma Healey did about Mumsnet members being 'transphobic'
It included a post by someone who was advocating for trans-rights and said sarcastically, 'you could call for a new section 28' taken out of context

The idea and claim has been shared, re-tweeted and absorbed by many people, including those with political influence.

For a minority or oppressed group they are literally the loudest, most paid attention to and accommodated group ever...

Gets tiring hearing that they are marginalised... they have the world bending backwards imo

Safeguarding comes second
Science comes second
Equality comes second
Education comes second

Ginger people and intersex people have never had the world bow down in this way to them, or ever asked...

theOtherPamAyres · 13/12/2018 15:27

Anyone else got a favourite batshit claim they’d like to see debunked?

Many people see the campaign for transgender 'acceptance' as being identical to the campaigns around acceptance of same sex orientation. But are they the same things?

I'm reminded of something said by Dawn Butler MP in a speech, about a new "section 28" *

Butler said:

*When I hear talk about re-introducing another form of section 28 for the trans community, I think – you’ve got to be kidding,”

“All of that pain that a whole community went through, you want to put another community through that pain? Why the hell would you do that? It’s outrageous.

“So we have to stand up and fight against that, and campaign against that and make sure it never happens*

  • Section 28 (for our younger MNetters) was a piece of legislation introduced by the Thatcher, Conservative government in the 1980s. It made it illegal for local authorities to intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality". It stayed on the statute books until 2003^

Anyone else got a favourite batshit claim they’d like to see debunked?

  • that the trans community is the most 'marginalised'

'Marginalised' is a word that gets bandied about and accepted, but does anyone know what it means and what the trans community mean by the term?

And is it true?

Hamster00 · 13/12/2018 14:26

Betty

Anyone else got a favourite batshit claim they’d like to see debunked?

Sadly all the "usual suspects" I play my daily "TRA Twitter Bingo" with have been debunked - however I honestly hadn't heard about the intersex/ginger people claim before. I mean really?!?

I also love your turn of phrase insofar as " you could actively breed more ginger people..." my painkiller-addled brain suddenly made a connection with Conservation/Breeding programs and it made me giggle somewhat. Blush

R0wantrees · 13/12/2018 14:25

Anyone else got a favourite batshit claim they’d like to see debunked?

That because some women have hysterectomies and are still women, so transwomen who also don't have wombs are similarly women.

Its incredibly offensive to women.
Particularly painful for those for whom this surgery was a medical neccessity at a young age and so may also be connected with infertility.
Its also really bad logic.

This was asserted by TRAs Rebecca Root on Victoria Derbyshire & Munroe Bergdorf on Channel 4's Gender Quake Debate. Neither host, Victoria Derbyshire or Cathie Newman challenged it

See also the claims on social media, including this board by males who appropriate these uniquely female experiences without respect, empathy or care.

I’d love to see this expanded to cover some more of the common batshit TRA claims, such as ‘intersex is as common as being ginger’.

Ginger people seem pretty common if you live in the UK, Ireland, the US and Australia, so this claim makes intersex conditions seem common too - after all, the numbers ARE similar, and we all know several ginger people, right?

However, when you look at the global population and see how few ginger people there are in African and Asian countries, you realise that even if intersex people and ginger people do occur at the same rate, both are statistically unusual worldwide.

Ginger people do not prove that ‘sex is a spectrum’.

Also, if you wanted to, you could actively breed more ginger people, increasing the population numbers ‘- you can’t do this with disorders of sexual development, especially as lots of the conditions under the ‘intersex’ header cause infertility.

(I say this as a ginger person who married a ginger person and had a ginger baby. My non-ginger baby (different father) has autism spectrum disorder, so I am also well aware that having a medically diagnosed developmental ‘disorder’ does not make you a lesser human being, just a variation.
Equally, having gender dysphoria doesn’t make you a lesser human being, nor does it make you a special exemption from sex based classifications)

Anyone else got a favourite batshit claim they’d like to see debunked?

SO much stupid!! It’s incredible these people are able to do anything really. Although many of them seem not to have jobs so...

R0wantrees · 13/12/2018 11:40

There are some very serious issues being exposed by many TRAs lack of critical thinking & reading for understanding skills.

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 13/12/2018 11:33

No our brains are not plastic they are made of human tissue.

This bit did make me laugh, I have to say. How can you possibly argue with stupid like that Grin

Bubonicpanic · 13/12/2018 11:28

Well thats actually funny, they have apparantly debunked the facts by repeating the myth the facts are there debunking.

Round and round they go..

StrangeLookingParasite · 13/12/2018 11:21

No our brains are not plastic they are made of human tissue.

Good fucking grief.

MYTH Puberty blocker drugs are harmless.
REALITY Medical professionals are voicing serious concerns about the use of drugs like Lupron to block puberty in children. Estrogen and testosterone are not just needed for puberty, they are vital for teenage brain development. Young adults have been left with stunted genitalia after using puberty blockers. Much more research is needed. In the US, the FDA is investigating Lupron.

MYTH You can be born with a female brain in a male body.
REALITY There is no such thing as a male brain or female brain, especially at birth, when all but the most basic parts of the brain are undeveloped. Our brains are plastic and shaped by our experience.

MYTH Sex is assigned at birth.
REALITY Biological sex is observed and recorded at birth. Sex is determined at conception, when an egg from a woman (which always carries an X chromosome) is fertilised by a sperm from a man, carrying either a Y or an X chromosome. In fewer than 1 in 1,000 births there is a chromosomal abnormality that means sex cannot be determined straight away. For those other than a subgroup of intersex people, XX is female and XY is male. MYTH Legal sex change is difficult and invasive in the UK.
REALITY The UK Gender Recognition Act (2004) is one of the most liberal in the world, requiring neither surgery nor drugs for legal sex change. About a third of the countries in the world allow legal sex change and of those the vast majority require transgender people to have surgery, including many European countries and US states. Does anyone have a pdf of those facts please, given that MRAs and TRAs are trying to take the site down? I’d like to send the pdf it to my (Labour) MP to ask them what they are doing to protect women and children from a movement based on lies, with serious safeguarding implications.

"MYTH Transwomen have surgery to transition.
REALITY 80-95% of males who identify as transgender keep their penis. Source: Sex and Gender Ethics Society, from evidence given to MPs at the Women and Equalities Select Committee inquiry in 2015.

MYTH Transwomen in the UK are more at risk of murder.
REALITY Thankfully, transgender people are no more likely to be murdered than anyone else in the UK. Sources: ONS and Trans Murder Monitoring Project. Since 2008, 7 transwomen have been murdered and 12 transgender males have been convicted of murder. There were no recorded murders of transmen in that time.

MYTH Half of transgender young people attempt suicide.
REALITY This statistic comes from a questionnaire filled in by a self-selecting group of just 27 transgender young people, far too small a group to meet normal statistical standards. In reality, child suicide is extremely rare. A study of Serious Case Reviews found no suicides of trans children in the UK in the last 10 years. Despite this, the threat of child suicide is used regularly by transgender lobby groups to press parents into transing their children. It is irresponsible to quote the survey without highlighting the very small sample size and flouts guidelines on reporting suicide by the Samaritans.

MYTH Transwomen pose no risk to women and girls.
REALITY Transgender males retain the same rates of criminality as other males, including for violent crime, according to the only long-term study (Dhejne et al, 2011). Fair Play for Women found that at least 40% of transgender prisoners in England and Wales are serving sentences for sex offences, a far higher proportion than the general prison population. These figures have since been corroborated by the Ministry of Justice.

MYTH Men would not identify as transgender to attack women and girls.
REALITY This monitoring project documents crimes against women and girls in the UK by males who identify as women. 98% of sex offences are committed by men, including transgender males. 90% of sex crime victims are female. Source: Ministry of Justice.
