Red Flags and Radicals: A Detransitioner’s Response to the Unhappiness of Andrea Long Chu

Interesting article from a detransitioner. I skimmed through that Andrea Long Chu article in the NYT the other day and was amazed. This is not normal or healthy behaviour, and it is a sign of how messed up we have become that anyone could think it is and that people feeling like that should be given surgery and hormones on demand.

And then there are the people arguing the other perspective (points up). The comparison is quite striking, isn't it?

Yep. Stark. Even the professors involved are nigh-on illiterate.

I find the detransitioners, as a whole, a tremendously articulate and thoughtful community. Also, challenging for me personally. I kind of expect them to be like ex-smokers, you know? Evangelical, dire warnings, all that. And yes, a few are, but most aren't.

Carey is so clever and delicate and subtle in that piece, you can't help but compare to the clodhopping abusive manner of those still in the cult, can you?

Yup.

Detransition rates 0.99% at UK NHS gender clinic. Less than those that regret abortion.

Feminist4, this assertion stood out to me on the Whittle thread.

Where is the evidence of 0.99pc detransition at NHS clinics? From which point in transition (from surgery onwards or from 'living in role' onwards)?

What about the self-IDers who never see the inside of a clinic?

Or the children who detransition at rates of approximately 80pc when left alone?

And even if it was only 1 in a 100 we're not talking about somebody regretting a tattoo or a piercing. Taking testosterone for a few years will leave a woman with permanent facial hair and lowered voice, may affect fertility and as mentioned above there is the possibility of other health problems. If the woman had proceeded to surgery and had a mastectomy or hysterectomy, that's horrific.

The landscape is changing so fast and research into detransition has been so difficult and sparse that I'd take that statistic with a large pinch of salt.

Great writing and she nails the "radical queer" worldview.

I know someone whose daughter only spent a year on testosterone but who has now developed a chronic health problem her doctors believe is related to it. There are going to be so many cases like this. She is in the US where hormones are handed out like Smarties.

AngryAttackKittens · 28/11/2018 23:28

She's brilliant, isn't she?
