As it's Trans Awareness Week I wanted to give a shout out to all the old school Trans folk who are busy getting on with their lives and are not so vocal online.

Peace and acceptance to you all
xx

Do you not think that the hate crime that trans people can experience, being ridiculed/assaulted/harassed for not being dressed as someone wants them to be, is a feminist issue?

How is that a feminist issue. Is it about womens rights?

Surely keeping women safe from hate crime and ridiculed/assaulted/harassed for being female is the issue here.

Or the amount of transmen (who were biological woman and therefore the people feminism is about) having poor mental health and suicidal tendencies may be a feminist issue? Or do these ‘woman’ not matter because you don’t like them?

Well are they men or women? Make your mind up.

Earlywalker · 12/11/2018 20:14

I’m not getting sucked in, I don’t want a debate.
I just didn’t want hate to go unchallenged, and being nasty about an awareness week is just about hate. The same attitude about a Muslim awareness week, or migrant, or gay etc etc would not have gone unchallenged.

AspieAndProud · 12/11/2018 20:10

Transmen are relevant to a feminism board because they are women.

Why do you think they should be relevant here if you think they are men?

Why aren’t you taking their case to the MRA boards?

FloralBunting · 12/11/2018 19:59

I'm sure you've noticed the threads on here discussing the very specific issues that transmen deal with, from medical issues to the fact that they do not escape their disadvantages and can still be rape victims etc. It's often pointed out what an afterthought transmen are to those pushing the transactivist line. I notice they weren't first in your thoughts when you posted either.

Other than that, trans issues are only relevant here when they touch upon women's rights. Male bodied people presenting in 'feminine' ways and being attacked by other men isn't a feminist issue, no.

Rixera · 12/11/2018 19:57

Quiet support, OP. From the 'he-she ladies' sentenced in Victorian times, the Edwardian trans-man who pencilled on his moustache to the boys and girls who strive onward today, I'm not getting into debates here but sending quiet support to all those who struggle just to exist.

Earlywalker · 12/11/2018 19:52

It is clear the poster wanted to say along the lines of ‘I know we have our differences but we still support your fight’ unfortunalty it backfired.
A week aimed at raising awareness of prejudice that minority groups face is not free to be ridiculed because trans hate gets a ‘free pass’ on mumsnet.

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 12/11/2018 19:45

Oh yes, Sal Brinton. The same Sal Brinton who said, at a Fawcett Society / 50-50 Parliament event aimed at getting more women to stand as MPs, that she'd be happy with a single sex government if half of them were transwomen.

Yeah right.

VMisaMarshmallow · 12/11/2018 19:38

Early - this is the feminism boards. Can you imagine the outrage caused if you go onto the formula feeding boards and create a thread for breastfeeding awareness week?

Op - you should feel free to make this thread in many other areas of MN. Just not the one dedicated to women & the movement for them.

VMisaMarshmallow · 12/11/2018 19:34

Thing - Miranda Yardley would be the first person to point out that Lib Dem list posted above is a bunch of bullshit. He says that there is little to no transphobia in the UK (except from the cross dressers that are appropriating his experience of gender dysphoria) that there are not hate crimes committed against trans people here, that he is 100% safe in male toilets, and that the mermaid stats are bs like they have been proven to be time & time again.

I’m quite sure that if Miranda Yardley knew you were posting about trans awareness week on a feminism board he’d tell you to get out of women’s space.

We all appreciate the voices and experiences of trans people who know biology, but we don’t need to turn women’s boards into a gratitude ceremony for knowing the truth. Somewhat defeats the purpose of knowing that tw are not women.

I'm aware, thanks.

Not a feminist topic.

FloralBunting · 12/11/2018 19:26

I feel no need whatsoever to underline that I'm a nice, kind sort who doesn't think every trans person is an evil loon. I get wearied with women having to persistently back up their "It goes with saying, NATALT" creds.

Yes, Miranda is a good egg, and so are some others who post here. But why should they get extra pats for just doing a decent thing and saying 'Yes, women are allowed rights and boundaries'. That's ground level stuff.

Deliriumoftheendless · 12/11/2018 19:20

I agree FWR isn’t the place for this to be celebrated as it isnt about women but there’s nothing wrong with celebrating and being supportive of transwomen who are understanding of the issues around self id. I would be supportive of anyone to express themselves peacefully as they wish and of facilitaties that aid trans people as long as that doesn’t encroachnon women and girl’s safety.

I would like some people to be more aware how the huge umbrella is sheltering some who absolutely should not be considered trans and that those would have an awareness of the damage they are doing to women, children and transsexuals.

FuriousOfSurrey · 12/11/2018 19:10

I can't help but be aware of trans women. My work place is very "woke" and has several arms within the same organisation. One of which has thousands of young women doing what many consider to be a pretty menial role. The only one I have seen celebrated in the last year for doing their job on the company web site in that role is - have a guess - trans. Yep I'm only too aware of trans. The only girls worth making a song and dance about where I work are the ones with a penis.

Gronky · 12/11/2018 19:02

I fully support transmen.

Isn't that somewhat akin to men supporting transwomen?

Gonzales27 · 12/11/2018 19:00

Well said Fairenuff !!

'peak Muslim' might not be considered so acceptable despite being equally justifiable when one considers the many misogynistic aspects of Islam...

But that's the whole point. People can have their beliefs without trying to force everyone to have the same belief.

Unlike TRAs who are trying to force everyone to accept their ideology.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 12/11/2018 18:49

Islam Judism Christianty + more I'm sure, mainstream global religions are patriarchal misogynistic shocker.

Happy to discuss on another thread if you want to start one.

ScottCheggJnr · 12/11/2018 18:47

Whilst understanding the general resistance to self ID, I do agree with a previous poster who pointed out that the phrase 'peak Muslim' might not be considered so acceptable despite being equally justifiable when one considers the many misogynistic aspects of Islam...

NothingOnTellyAgain · 12/11/2018 18:42

If you look at the stonewall umbrella which includes gender nonconformity, plus of course definitions like agender and non binary, it turns out most people are trans (whether they identify as trans or not).

So where does that leave us?

happydappy2 · 12/11/2018 18:37

But what human rights don't trans people have?
Why can't transwomen respect womens rights to sex segregated spaces?
Transpeople don't exist in a world purely for them-they need to share it with other people who also have rights.

Fairenuff · 12/11/2018 18:36

Trans Rights are Human Rights

Doesn't this statement sort of imply that trans people are not human? Where are they getting the idea that being a transperson is different to being human? Confused

MadamBatty · 12/11/2018 18:26

Goofy works.

Tellin · 12/11/2018 18:23

Sigh. The last word was meant to be goady, not goofy. Although, I suppose, that would work too.
