An asylum seeker pupil at a school in Ipswich is being investigated after claims he is in his 30s. Maybe he is trans age? Hmm If he identifies as a teenager then we should respect that and treat him as such, right? ConfusedHmm

With regards to the refugees the women were all left behind with no husband and son now to protect them from being raped back home

LikeDust · 02/11/2018 18:01

The thing that pisses me off about all this, apart from the safeguarding issues, is that people who are dishonest, gaming the system are allowed in, but people who are open about their situation can get turned away on some stupid technicality.

I remember a kid who arrived as an unaccompanied minor living at the children's home - who was hardly ever there. He was from Pakistan but had lied that he was from Afghanistan and spend most of his time with his extended family. It was obvious that this info gets about.

Furthermore, something most people don't realise, is that perpetrators of war crimes are as likely to seek and be granted asylum as their victims, so you have all these poor sods having to keep looking back over their shoulder in case they bump into one of them. It is hardly 'asylum' if the problems follow you to where you are supposed to be safe.

Those blokes in school are fucking terrifying. God knows where they are from or why they are here. It can't be because they are actually seeking asylum otherwise they wouldn't be pretending to be unaccompanied minors.

JulieBindelAteMyHomework · 02/11/2018 17:56

Just out of interest, have any female asylum seekers lied about their age to get into school or is it just the men ?

CurbsideProphet · 02/11/2018 17:43

I'm not surprised by this. I used to work with care leavers and there were times when the males who arrived as unaccompanied asylum seeking children were clearly older than the 18-25 age range ww should have been working with.

TwistedStitch · 02/11/2018 17:38

Christ just seen the photo. I'm 38 and he looks older than me!

Noboozeforme · 02/11/2018 17:34

Refugees lying about thier ages has been a problem for years. In children's services when we suspect this is happening we do an age assessment which is just two trained social workers asking a few questions - hardly fool proof. We used to do tooth analysis but it gave an age range of 5 years so wasn't helpful either.

Lots and lots of over age 'kids' have been through the care system. However, some of them do look older and seem to mature physically quicker - which makes it all the more difficult. I remember one lad who said he was 15 and no one beleived him - but when you looked back at his picture from when he was 12 (and in another borough) he totally looked 12.

PurpleCrowbar · 02/11/2018 17:17

I think it's true that children from some parts of the world do mature younger.

I teach in the ME, & my 14yo son looks noticeably younger than most of his y10 peers. He's tall, but still a kid - voice hasn't broken, barely a hint of peach fuzz on his face - whereas many of his mates are shaving daily (we've got y8 lads having a credible stab at Movember ) & generally look more like 18-19yo lads do in the UK.

However - these are rich, well nourished young men. If you visit Garbage City, you'll see teenagers who look like scrawny 10yos. So I doubt that very many child refugees genuinely look like solidly built, muscular adults.

I do think it's inevitable that some young refugee guys will claim to be younger if it's to their advantage - & I'm not sure I blame them, really. But yes, it's a safeguarding worry.

Check 'Hollie Dayinn' on Facebook. She has the chap's photo.

VintageFur · 02/11/2018 16:59

I've been called a racist bigot before on MN for my thoughts regarding adults presenting as children - my line of thinking being in keeping with packing.

I've also been called a terf for saying men are men.

I'm not surprised my mental health is so shaky when what I see with my very own eyes and know to be true is rejected. I feel I'm being gas-lit on an industrial scale.

wingwarbler · 02/11/2018 16:46

*Zutt& because according to some, criticism and analysis makes you an ist or a phobe or a bully, and people are cowed by that.

Because there are too many people on the other extreme who will knee-jerk condemn and throw away the key without caring what can be done to make life any better for anyone except themselves.

Because we have lost our middle ground where people bother to do the hard work, and live with hard choices for the long term benefit and believe that it will be worth it, or that doing the right thing is worth it in itself. We are scared and jaded and claustrophobic from the difficulty and weight of difficult to solve problems such as misogyny, population growth, climate change, wondering what the point of life is for eg. The constant juggling. As a whole it makes us weak and vulnerable to extremes and magical thinking as an outlet.

I find it terrifying that so many people have become so stupid re safeguarding just because they desperately want the world to be a nice place or they have been brainwashed, or whatever it is.

Women giving a shit and saying NO is what will bring this back I believe.

Gileswithachainsaw · 02/11/2018 16:44

annie

Do a face book search.
Then come back and tell me that's a hard life

anniehm · 02/11/2018 16:37

It's happened before but the age discrepancy was only 3 or 4 years. Asylum seekers know the rules are different for children but as there are medical checkups I'm not sure how a 14 year difference wouldn't be detected. I'm actually thinking it's more likely to be parents not liking the fact there's an asylum seeker at the school (some do look older due to a hard life remember)

Gileswithachainsaw · 02/11/2018 16:15

I agree - this has nothing to do with transgender issues

Of course it does.

It proves men will lie. About age. And about being a woman. And governing bodies will grant their requests to dismantle safe Guarding to give them the access to children . Because these are predominantly men and our girls are most at risk from them

ZuttZeVootEeVro · 02/11/2018 16:13

What I'm concerned with is that there must have been so many people who had contacted with this man(?) whose priority is child safeguarding who either did nothing about it, or whose concerns were dismissed.

What other safeguilding issues are being ignored and why?

LassWiADelicateAir · 02/11/2018 16:10

It is correct that poverty and poor nutrition will make people look older than they are. There is a very distinct look. This will no doubt be written off as right wing, classist prejudice but there is a distinct look amongst some persons in the UK who have been brought up in severly deprived conditions but that looks nothing like these strapping young men.

I agree - this has nothing to do with transgender issues.

wingwarbler · 02/11/2018 16:05

That isn't what I meant zutt. I am saying we can consider why he did something and what contributed to that so we can stop the causes and predict how people may react and behave, and that we use that knowledge to take proper rational measures to prevent people doing wrong. Not saying stupidly that it will never happen, nor say they are all pure evil so what else did we expect.

I am fully on board with strong safe guarding and strong boundaries. I was just talking about this tribal approach of one extreme or the other.

VickyEadie · 02/11/2018 16:04

Can anyone PM me a link to this photo? Can't find it via a search.

userblablabla · 02/11/2018 15:56

This has NOTHING to do with trans people! But as usual on Mumsnet, any excuse for transphobia...

ZuttZeVootEeVro · 02/11/2018 15:52

People seem to lack the will and ability to hold and balance complex and competing thoughts these days.

I don't want the safeguarding of children to be compromised because we have to look at the needs of adults.

This man might be just wanting a better life for himself and doing anything to make that happen or he might not have understood the seriousness of his deceit.

But that's irrelevant. There are procedures in place and many adults whose job it is to protect children from the risk of abuse.

The safety of children has to be priority otherwise children are at risk from adults.

wingwarbler · 02/11/2018 15:31

It is an interesting situation that too often people generally seem to polarise to being naive and compassionate, or very cynical and ignorant. I don't know if this is new or it has always been exactly the same. I think we are different than the 19 50s - 90s for sure.

People seem to lack the will and ability to hold and balance complex and competing thoughts these days.

This is the link with the trans ideology - too many things nowadays are one extreme or the other. Both extremes are idiotic, irrational and intellectually lazy.

Even perpetrators can be victims, victims can be perpetrators. We are not 100% angels or 100% demons. Completely mad or completely sane in cliched stereotypes

We could do with practising compassionate realism, neither totally demonising and ignoring contributing factors, nor putting on a pedestal built of naivety and irrational excusing. This is where the political middle ground ought to be to my mind; dealing with complex problems compassionately but not gullibly and with education and facts. Neither desperately and blindly rescuing, nor ignorant knee-jerk condemning, disregarding cause and effect. But being wise and balanced is hard work.

It applies so much to mental health care and to society - like good parenting on a grander scale, but totally agree that parenting is so lacking these days.

JellySlice · 02/11/2018 15:20

It is a direct parallel.

GC posters on FWR are concerned about the safeguarding dangers inherent in allowing males to self-ID as women or girls.

These same GC posters on FWR are concerned about the safeguarding dangers inherent in allowing adults to self-ID as children.

If a man says he is a woman, you expect us to agree. Yet if a man says he is a boy, you call him a cheat and a liar. Hmm

LassWiADelicateAir · 02/11/2018 15:11

These young men are cheats and liars.
That transagephobic, LassWiADelicateAir, and you know it. If they identify as young teens then it's not up to you to deny them their identities

The point I was making, and clearly failed, that a poster seemed to be trying to make excuses for these men because they are simply trying to make the best of a new life for themselves, but they weren't claiming "trans privilege".

This has nothing to do with transgender issues.

Julie

Searched and found it.

Bloody hell . Shock

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5228045/amp/Just-one-five-fake-child-migrants-UK-sent-home.html

It is in the Mail so it can't be true.

The men in these pictures don't remotely look like children. They look healthy and well nourished.
