Women’s Place - cancelled Leeds meeting

Came across this FOI request regarding the cancellation of the booking - it’s been updated today.

www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/womens_place_uk_booking?nocache=incoming-1257930#incoming-1257930

As well as publishing all their emails about cancelling the booking and redrafts of the press release, Leeds council today, accidentally published the name and phone number of the person who made the original booking - since been removed. I can’t believe they actually did that...

This is the e-mail that shows they had decided to shut down the meeting first, then were scrabbling for excuses.

I note that we have not been permitted to see the e-mails or discussion around this.

I also note in the Leeds Council statement that they allege the person making the booking said

“the meeting was about women’s rights and peace and that some women can feel nervous and intimidated as a result of violence and showed her pictures which were described as portraying female immigrants.”

This looks like an outright lie. WPUK have no reason to hide who they are. Presumably this was a one-to-one conversation and therefore they believe they can get away with lying. What a horrible world we live in, where officials pretend to take the moral high ground as they casually cover their tracks in ways that demonstrate their absolute lack of morality.

Of course it’s obvious that the spelling was just corrected. Anyone can see that or, you know, ASK if not sure.

That email trail is there for everyone to see. They were scrabbling about to come up with the best excuse.

QuietContraryMary · 02/11/2018 07:55

'one of her'

QuietContraryMary · 02/11/2018 07:54

"The sponsoring councillor has remained completely silent and not once defended her position or WPUK’s. "

TBF she may not want to be hounded out of the Labour party and deselected by the bromentum arseholes. There's one of here and about fifty million people straining at the leash to have her thrown to the dogs.

Alison Garthwaite's feminist credentials are not really in doubt.

BlardyBlar · 02/11/2018 07:51

so no one is even going to comment on why an organisation didn't put their correct name on the booking and then wonder why when they were found out that the council cancelled that booking?

It’s perfectly obvious from the e-mails that they decided to close the meeting down due to complaints. At some point, someone must have seized upon the correction and decided they could use it as the perfect excuse for closing down the meeting at such short notice.

They would have shut down the meeting either way. The e-mails are all about what excuse they should use to demonstrate their support for the LGBT community without getting into trouble. It’s perfectly obvious they know what they are doing is dodgy and they are trying to steer a way through so they don’t get into trouble.

AverageAvenger · 02/11/2018 07:48

The sponsoring councillor has remained completely silent and not once defended her position or WPUK’s. She’s chosen to remain loyal to the Labour Party. It’s councillors from other parties who are fighting this.

Whatevszz · 02/11/2018 07:47

In hindsight some positives however are that :

-Leeds City Council showed their true colours and councillors can be voted out
-lots of people were disgusted by the cancellation and it showed the world what women are up against
-the meeting went ahead anyway! 😀

Whatevszz · 02/11/2018 07:39

Absolutely disgusting behaviour by Leeds Council. Instead of offering protection for people peoole discussing a government consultation they side with, and capitulate to threats by terrorists.

I would be interested in contributing to a legal fund for challenging everyone who has libelled wpuk as transphobic.

Micke · 02/11/2018 07:30

I'm not sure she necessarily wants to be hounded to death by foaming-at-the-mouth TRAs.

yes true, but her name is already out there as a sponsor, so some of that harm has already been done, and TBH, as a councillor, I feel like there's a certain amount of responsibility here as the holder of a public role.

Goldenbuzzer · 02/11/2018 07:23

I can not believe the bookers details are still there. Leeds themselves have admitted the safety concerns.
I hope the Booker makes a complaint and that this is costly to Leeds financially. It’s unacceptable that her details are still there after they were told yesterday afternoon they had been published. ( first document was removed ) and then they did it again almost straight away. Hope the Booker is feeling ok. If it was me I’d be furious.

Yeah I bet you fucking would.

Bespin · 02/11/2018 06:54

Yes I would love the sponsoring councilor to clarify thst too

QuietContraryMary · 02/11/2018 06:54

"perhaps the sponsoring councillor could weigh in here at some point."

I'm not sure she necessarily wants to be hounded to death by foaming-at-the-mouth TRAs.

Micke · 02/11/2018 06:35

To me it looks like that thing that I do with my own name even, when I'm writing in a rush and missspell, then have to go back and overwrite it.

However it is hard to see on the scans, and I see that a higher quality one has been requested.

If you read the thread, you'll see that people have indeed already mentioned it.

Besides all of this, if there were any confusion on the form, it would have been easy to clarify - the booker was right in front of the person taking the form (hands up who's handed forms in, and had the person do exactly that because of poor hand writing - it's a normal thing to do), it would be completely normal to read them back too.

AND they'd originally booked this venue in April - perhaps the sponsoring councillor could weigh in here at some point.

There is another update from the person who made the FOI request.

Ereshkigal · 01/11/2018 22:20

particularly as they are aware of the very serious threats from transactivists and (apparently) think them so dangerous that they couldn't risk holding this meeting.

Exactly. Oops.

arranfan · 01/11/2018 22:18

But, yes, Leeds Council are obliged to report it to the ICO themselves

Beyond that, I'd argue that this is actually in the category of a data breach that is a "high risk to the rights and freedoms of an individual" (given the context) and that the Data Controller at Leeds needs to contact the individual.

www.hoganlovells.com/en/publications/the-gdpr-introduces-new-notification-rules-for-personal-data-breaches

Potential for substantial fines if they don't - and they are substantial.

Melamin · 01/11/2018 22:07

And in all those emails, thousands of words in total, there wasn't even one example of the transphobia that they were accusing WPUK of

No, not one example, but they were pretty damned sure that WPUK were going to efforts in order to do whatever it was.

SarahJane73 · 01/11/2018 22:01

The individual affected can also report it to the ICO:

ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint/your-personal-information-concerns/

But, yes, Leeds Council are obliged to report it to the ICO themselves - particularly as they are aware of the very serious threats from transactivists and (apparently) think them so dangerous that they couldn't risk holding this meeting.

Ereshkigal · 01/11/2018 21:19

Especially as they made a point of not sharing other emails because personal details.

Micke · 01/11/2018 21:11

Given they justified cancelling the whole meeting because of threats of violence and bombs, they'd better bloody report themselves to the ICO over this personal data leak - if a meeting was dangerous then sharing her name and number is clearly dangerous too.

Ereshkigal · 01/11/2018 21:07

What breaches do we need to notify the ICO about?
When a personal data breach has occurred, you need to establish the likelihood and severity of the resulting risk to people’s rights and freedoms. If it’s likely that there will be a risk then you must notify the ICO; if it’s unlikely then you don’t have to report it. However, if you decide you don’t need to report the breach, you need to be able to justify this decision, so you should document it.
