TG day of remembrance

When did 20 November become the transgender Day Of Remembrance?

Is there an International Women's Day of Remembrance? We bloody well need to get onto it given the numbers of us who are actually killed every single day. And given that the majority of women who are murdered are killed by men, that's anti-women (adult human female, to be clear - and that's not exclusionary, trans women don't want to be included anyway, they've made their own day they can't now complain about not being in ours).

And I do hope that they'll be remembering the trans people killed by other trans people. Because there are a fair few of them too.

Oh stop with the hyperbole. The issues have been made clear and our words represent what we think, not your weird twists and misrepresentations. Nobody is denying anyone anything. Official days of rememberance have established meanings and intents.

EarlyWalker · 24/10/2018 19:49

Funny how it’s the question is now ‘they shouldn’t receive public funds’ because a few pages back the question was ‘it doesn’t really happen they’re just doing it to score points’ and a few pages before that it was ‘they think they’re woman so they should do women’s rememberance day not transgender’ and before that it was ‘noone Cares enough about women to remember them, why do they get a day when we dont’

Make up your minds as to why, if you’re going to have such an issue with people remembering the dead. So Disrespectful. A few people’s opinions of what is to be ‘remembered’ at this event is not everyone’s, a few people don’t speak for an entire group. A few woman certainly do not speak for me that’s for sure.

People can use a rememberance day to remember who they like in their own way, to say they should be denied this for any of the points above is ridiculous.

And the fact that the whole faux innocence of ‘we just care about woman’ this is nothing to do with women, this is hating on a group of people for remembering those that have died because you don’t see them worthy and you refuse to admit that trans people do face difficulties in life and can’t face that when you count suicides and deaths world wide, there is a large number.

Should we only be allowed to remember those that a select few tell us we should? Because I thought this movement centred on freedom of expression, yet you’re denying that trans people should have freedom to remember their own dead. All because ‘there’s not that many of them’ Or ‘they’re only remembering dead people because they want to manipulate us’ despite the obvious egos of some people, the trans community does not actually revolve around upsetting feminists, they are real people and it’s Awful that this thread exists.

Just popping back in to say that if anyone reading this has lost a loved one to violent crime, I can personally recommend the charity SAMM (Support After Murder & Manslaughter).

You can contact them at any time, even decades after the initial bereavement.

ResistanceIsNecessary · 24/10/2018 19:43

There's an awful lot of projection happening here. Nobody is stopping or preventing anyone from remembering someone they have lost.

The thread is questioning the motivations of some activists, not all of them.

AspieAndProud · 24/10/2018 19:42

please tell us all how we should remember those of us who were not lucky enough to receive the support we needed or have the means to access it those around us to help when we needed it.

Is that what the day is about now?

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 19:35

What are you going on about? This is not healthy communication.

Bespin · 24/10/2018 19:30

please tell us all how we should remember those of us who were not lucky enough to receive the support we needed or have the means to access it those around us to help when we needed it. please continue to tell us how we are doing this wrong I want you too because the more you do the more you show how little regard you have for anyone else and for how it effects them.

Bespin · 24/10/2018 19:27

I mis typed I'm. sorry about that, let me tell you about her she was a young lady that was quite. Well known in her area she had transitioned a. few years before, though not from the best of backgrounds and not able to easily access all the services that others have she was making the best of what she had and she had a boyfriend that loved her, she had sort help and people were trying to help her at the time she died and there was a month lead up to this incident happening where people were trying to highlight the dangers and people did not listen as this was a working class girl from a rough place. but again please you tell me about her from your Google search

QuietContraryMary · 24/10/2018 19:22

I was referring to the fact you called her Thomlinson, when her name was Thompson.

Bespin · 24/10/2018 19:17

oh do please tell me why you think she had a liguture around her neck and how that was supposed to end. the vidyle was for the bloody inquest and the findings that placing a vunrable young woman in a sutuation that was only going to make her more vulnerable was going to end in a good way.

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 19:16

I can’t understand a word you said. Wtf

Bespin · 24/10/2018 19:14

no it is not one website started to highlight that around the world this was an issue and then local groups around the world took it on and it means that in different places in the world this means different things on a local level to the people who. attend or recognise the people who have died simply for being trans, speak to the people who actually attend any of the events we do to remember there lives the reading of thst list is usually a main thing but also talking about others we have known and lost along the way.

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 19:13

And The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia is May 17

OrchidInTheSun · 24/10/2018 19:13

Remember whoever you like Bespin. The question is whether U.K. councils should debate funds to marking a day which impacts on very few people here when there are lots of their groups who are much more at risk of murder (which is the point of the day).

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 19:10

March 31st is the annual Transgender Day of Visibility.

QuietContraryMary · 24/10/2018 19:10

"finally Vicki thomlinson who died after being placed in a male prison and who we tried to help but we were unable to reach in time and could only comfort her family afterwards."

She must have been very close to you.

"Vikki Thompson, 21, from Keighley, was found dead in her cell at HMP Leeds in 2015 with a ligature around her neck.

The jury at the two-week inquest in Wakefield concluded it was right she was held in a male jail and that she did not intend to take her own life."

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 19:09

*The Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester's death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 19:06

You’re not a representative. We are responding to prominent trans activists and to material in media. You personally as an individual might have your own meanings, but it’s not what the day is officially for. It’s specifically homicide.

Bespin · 24/10/2018 19:02

I continue to be amazed at how poeple can tell us what we think our day is for or what it is used for. should we just get people to come on here and tell them what it means to them. there is one website that collects the figures but that does not dictate what we remember on that day have any of you been to our vidyles at all. in my time I have attended ones for Lucy meddows took her life after being hounded by the press for dearing to be a teacher. leelah alcorn who killed herself because her parents took her for conversion therapy and would have died anonymously unless she had set a note to be published after her death and finally Vicki thomlinson who died after being placed in a male prison and who we tried to help but we were unable to reach in time and could only comfort her family afterwards.

but please keep on telling us what our day of remembrance is for.

IKeepFlouncing · 24/10/2018 15:22

Resistance thanks I found thread and order placed 😁

DD said get me bag as early Xmas present next week. (easily pleased), especially as I always carry extra bag as reliant on public transport & I just gave mum my handy shopping bag.

I’d like to get my mum one (we call her bag lady she obsessed with bags always) I know she will be eyeing up mine when get it.

Fucking sad that I can’t get mum one given she back to using TFGL daily but still wobbly on feet after recovering from life threatening illness, I be to scared for her.

Remembering the 40plus years working for NHS all the fucking abuse sometimes she’s put up with, and still wants to return once well enough even though I’ve begged her not too and can’t carry a fucking woman bag because of arse wipes of today.

Yes let’s start a thread on remembering all the women in our lives.

ResistanceIsNecessary · 24/10/2018 14:04

I wonder if hormone deaths may have occurred from self-prescribed use. I know that some transwomen have previously discussed buying hormones online because they can't (or won't) go through the GIRES assessment process.

JillyArmeeen · 24/10/2018 13:55

Does anyone know how many trans people have died from complications of surgery or their Hormone medications?
Or when they are remembered?
According to the minutes taken at the 'we're still here' conference, a trans person there was claiming they knew three people who had died from taking hormones.
Either that's true, in which case where are the stats, who are these people and when are they remembered? If true it would make trans people in this country at a much higher risk from hormones than from murder.
Or its not true. Hmmm

Tshirts come small, hoodie not sure but they are advertised as unisex so might be bigger.

LangCleg · 24/10/2018 13:45

Including one factual one by LangCleng about statistics - what's that about?

Nah. My deleted one was a snide add-on to my stats one. I'll own it.

pennydrew · 24/10/2018 13:33

Including one factual one by LangCleng about statistics - what's that about?

I know. Fucking bizarre. I had one deleted that just said we have the police to investigate crimes and figure out their cause ( instead of guessing ) I’ve asked MNHQ to explain.

NopeNi · 24/10/2018 13:24

The deletions on this thread are bizarre.
