When did 20 November become the transgender Day Of Remembrance?

Is there an International Women's Day of Remembrance? We bloody well need to get onto it given the numbers of us who are actually killed every single day. And given that the majority of women who are murdered are killed by men, that's anti-women (adult human female, to be clear - and that's not exclusionary, trans women don't want to be included anyway, they've made their own day they can't now complain about not being in ours).

And I do hope that they'll be remembering the trans people killed by other trans people. Because there are a fair few of them too.

What does ‘statistically I only have 4 years left to live’ even mean? That the average age a transwoman can expect to live is four years older than she is now?

That’s not how statistics work. The average life expectancy of a woman is about 70 years at birth.

That doesn’t mean that if you are 40 that you can only expect 30 more years because the longer you live the longer your life expectancy is.

When you are born you have a chance of dying in childhood. If you survive to adulthood then you aren’t going to be a victim of infant mortality and have to adjust your life expectancy accordingly. If you live to 40 your chances of living to 70 are very high. If you live to 69 your chance of living to 70 are are huge.

List of solely Americans killed in 2017 -
www.hrc.org/resources/violence-against-the-transgender-community-in-2018

List of all victims, by year and country - en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_unlawfully_killed_transgender_people

List of solely victims of anti transgender crime -
tdor.info

From the website - The names on the list are people who died because of anti-transgender violence. In the past some have contacted TDoR to ask that suicides or domestic violence victims be added to the list, but the list is specific to those who died from anti-transgender violence.

OrchidInTheSun · 25/10/2018 22:00

What's the website?

Bespin · 25/10/2018 21:55

to look at the list it's got a website they are named ans some have causes next to there names but we also remember others look. back on. this thread and actually read posts that do not agree with you for names of some

OrchidInTheSun · 25/10/2018 21:53

Who are the other dead transpeople apart from sex workers?

Bespin · 25/10/2018 21:53

the list and the day are not one and the same I remember its creation and the talks around if that was the sole purpose of our remberance and attending the first ones where especially in this country it was about the people around us that were no longer there and for a lot of the older ones the people they had lost along the way. many of us have stories and sometimes it is good to come together as a community and share them so they are not forgotten.

VerbeenaBeeks · 25/10/2018 21:47

as you appear to have totally disregarded anything I have put on this thread that we are remembering all dead not all are sex workers and many are not even on this list

Yes,but I think they want to conveniently not acknowledge that or at the least deny it.

Bespin · 25/10/2018 21:47

Yes we were quietly doing this for years and famous trans people are not the ones campaigning for rights day in. day out they are just the ones on the TV. normal trans people are the ones sat in the meetings explaining and evandencing our need for services

Avegemitesandwich · 25/10/2018 21:45

Transwomen have been in the toilets/changing rooms alongside us for years.

Ah yes the old 'duh, transwomen have been using your loos for years ya divvies, so let's let any male self id as a woman and have access to female prisons, refuges, sports, Girl Guides, all women shortlists, everything, what's the prob?'

Great argument.

Bespin · 25/10/2018 21:44

as you appear to have totally disregarded anything I have put on this thread that we are remembering all dead not all are sex workers and many are not even on this list. I support sex workers to allow them to find a credible socio economic alternative and access to appropriate services in relation to trans thst would be in realiton. to. disgeiminsrion in employment and health care

VerbeenaBeeks · 25/10/2018 21:43

Anyway, that's a separate issue, as this is a thread that is about allowing transpeople to have a day of remembrance. Which has apparently been a day for years too.
They should be allowed to remember fellow trans.

VerbeenaBeeks · 25/10/2018 21:41

They are the ones changing policy. They are the ones who are pushing for women's spaces to be erased

Munroe and others like her are just the media exceptable face of trans none of us voted to put them there we don't get to choose who represents us that why we end up. with India the media will only go with the people that give them there narrative or that can be trusted. famous trans people are no diffent to the rest of us there just famous people how many famous people in general represent your views

They are the ones changing policy. They are the ones who are pushing for women's spaces to be erased and, up until very recently when a whole load of women (myself included) actually woke up and realised what was happening, it was working at an incredible rate.

Bespin · 25/10/2018 21:27

this year why don't you come to a remembrance event and actually see what it is about instead of just telling us what we are remembering there are ones all over the country most of them just small gatherings the larger cities have events around them but mostly it just a small group of people gathered in the cold reading names and lighting candels

Electron1 · 25/10/2018 21:27

Let that penetrate.

Bespin · 25/10/2018 21:25

Avegemitesandwich · 25/10/2018 21:18

And Munroe isn't the only one using that tactic, although Munroe is one of the worst for it.

BrickByBrick · 25/10/2018 21:17

I don't know if the 3 out of 4 stat is true or false, but any abuse at anyone is one person too many.

I have an American on my FB who is very supportive of trans rights, the US is particularly dreadful in some states, I think though that if many were more open about the day then they would get much more support.

Avegemitesandwich · 25/10/2018 21:17

there are many country's around the world that people face danger in for being lgbt and country's that I'm not even allowed to enter due to the laws thst they have. any community is stronger together and I support all trans people in there fights for equality as they do with ours.

Yes but that's not what TRAs are doing. Munroe Bergdorf for example doesn't appear to actually be doing anything to help trans sex workers in Brazil. But will use their murders to tell people that as a trans woman of colour, statistically Munroe only has 4 years left to live. That is a tactic designed to shock and persuade people into allowing transwomen into female spaces. It's a lie.

Bespin · 25/10/2018 21:09

I suppose the 3/4 assult stat is false too

Bespin · 25/10/2018 20:55

yes the risks are high as they often have to not disclose there trans status to get work and that can be a dangerous thing. the way for all this type of sex work is to improve socioeconomic opertunitues and health care disenfranchised groups often have to turn to these means simply to access the services others take for granted

Avegemitesandwich · 25/10/2018 20:53

the reason their is no answer to your question is there is no link at all we are simply remembering them and the lives they have lead.

Yes there is a link. Many TRAs take the stats for murdered trans sex workers in other countries and use these stats as a general narrative for how much danger transgender people are in, even in countries such as the UK. They then use this as a reason why transwomen should have access to women's spaces. It's dishonest.

Remembering trans people who have died. Fine.

Bespin · 25/10/2018 20:48

the reason their is no answer to your question is there is no link at all we are simply remembering them and the lives they have lead. I can not even imagine what they must have gone through to get to that point. but I support them and champion there voices
