TG day of remembrance

When did 20 November become the transgender Day Of Remembrance?

Is there an International Women's Day of Remembrance? We bloody well need to get onto it given the numbers of us who are actually killed every single day. And given that the majority of women who are murdered are killed by men, that's anti-women (adult human female, to be clear - and that's not exclusionary, trans women don't want to be included anyway, they've made their own day they can't now complain about not being in ours).

And I do hope that they'll be remembering the trans people killed by other trans people. Because there are a fair few of them too.

Soo, Sawyer99, now your day has ended can we think about the many women whose lives are blighted and even ended by male violence? And what sort of society we will have if men can just declare themselves women , how that will make women feel safe and be able to reach our full potential? My feeling is that they're mutually exclusive. But you probably already guessed that.

Plus Transgender day of remembrance has been a thing since 1998. Keep your bigotry to yourself while we mourn our trans siblings

Today is a day to avoid social media.

The drama has started on Twitter by the Womens and Equalities Commission no less.

Lest we forget eh!

Earlywalker I didn't know abut white ribbon day - thank you

so Perhaps some women could look into setting up their own if they’re not happy with that. was a bit unnecessary and women have set up many things to remember women, as they should.

As I said previously I have no problem with anyone having a day of remembrance for their people/community. I don't see this as connected to the issues of self ID etc.

Earlywalker · 26/10/2018 10:09

White ribbon day does, yes it was set up by men. Perhaps some women could look into setting up their own if they’re not happy with that.

Violence against women and girls is a big problem. White Ribbon UK asks men to step up and become part of the solution. For 16 days starting November 25th, thousands of people across the UK will wear a white ribbon, and take a stand against violence.

That is 16 days. Trans people deserve their day. It’s ridiculous that anyone would even try and argue against that. I’d love to see the reaction if men came on MN and said we didn’t deserve a woman’s rememberance day because we’re only doing it for manipulating the public.

KittyKlawsReturns · 26/10/2018 09:58

cross posted with Hebe there

KittyKlawsReturns · 26/10/2018 09:57

I don't mind anyone having a day of remembrance to think about people who have suffered or died - even if it is just one person.

It would be fitting if women had a day of remembrance of their own (although a week, month... would be more fitting given the figures involved) to remember all the women who have died at the hands of men. It would also be fitting if we could have that and be assured it wouldn't be hijacked. We can only dream.

But Trans day of remembrance is fine by me - people are entitled to remember and reflect.

HebeMumsnet · 26/10/2018 09:55

Morning, everyone. We just wanted to pop by with a reminder that we are happy to host discussions about these issues on these boards but that we will be monitoring this thread closely and moderating according to our guidelines.

This is a day of remembrance, so whatever your opinions on that, we do think it's important not to forget that somewhere there are grieving families in need of support. We think for that reason, it's particularly important to keep the debate civil. If the thread becomes uncivil we will have to remove the whole thing so please do think carefully when posting. Thank you.

Transphobia is deplorable here

OrchidInTheSun · 26/10/2018 09:36

From Trans Murder Monitoring carried out by Transgender Europe early. It was cited earlier in the thread.

And you know what makes me sick? Someone who says they're a mother who wishes they had given their child drugs that would have damaged their bone density, reduced their IQ and rendered them infertile. That really is sick

Feminist4 · 26/10/2018 09:26

As are you littlebrowndog.

I’d personally like the know where the data of ‘trans people are statistically the safest group in the uk’ Comes from?

The link to women's rights comes when the painting of trans people as victims, including misleading murder stats, is used as a tool to beat down discussion of women's rights

So exactly what I said uptheead and was told I was wrong? Trans rememberance day is an issue because people are only doing it to portray the community as victims so they can get in woman’s spaces.

It’s funny, they thought of the day 20 years ago and have done it every year since, purely so that they could use it in 2018 to shut down woman, those clever old trans folk, must be time travellers too!

QuietContraryMary · 26/10/2018 09:21

I was hoping when you said 'false data' you'd actually cite an example of data that are false, rather than just repeating your assertion.

Feminist4 · 26/10/2018 09:18

Yes - pointing to websites that look legit and scientific but just carry an anti trans agenda.

QuietContraryMary · 26/10/2018 09:15

"Many of them are revisionists and frequently refer to false data"

Oh really? Do you have any examples of this?

Melamin · 26/10/2018 08:47

I don't have an issue with a day of remembrance for Trans people. Grieving is hard. I hope their community can find comfort together and also some solutions to help prevent violence against them. I would wish the same for any group/community. I also imagine anyone using another's death for political gain would be viewed poorly by those grieving.

Just an aside, this maybe already mentioned, but I'm busy today so not going through 18 pages. In regards to Whiteribbon.org. Yes it is a men's organisation and it is copping a huge backlash here in Australia at the moment. Due to questionable comments made concerning women's reproductive rights. Of course they have now backtracked these comments but the public response is, Screw You, our donations are now going direct to refuges and frontline organisations.

Ereshkigal · 26/10/2018 01:41

Is she confusing the mean (what most people mean by average) with the mode (the most likely age at which to die)?

A mode of 35 seems rather high for such a dangerous profession.

Indeed! Women generally start off in prostitution there in their teens, so surely MTFs too?

VerbeenaBeeks · 26/10/2018 01:28
