Attitudes to Gender - a survey being used to write a new gender bill in the UK

Trousered · 21/10/2018 17:22

What is the purpose of the study?
This survey is part of the Future of Legal Gender (FLaG) project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (2018-2021). It explores 1) whether people should have a female/male legal status assigned at birth; and 2) how we could change the way that female/male and other gender categories are used in UK law.
Who is doing this research and why?
Professor Davina Cooper (King’s College London) leads the overall project and Professor Elizabeth Peel (Loughborough University) is leading this part of the research.
We want to make sure that the research is informed by the experiences and views of a wide range of people. Thank you for sharing your opinions and contributing to the project. You can read more about why we are doing the project, and the research team here.

Re the survey's conflation of sex & gender - and trying to be charitable - the GRA currently creates a legal fiction that people with a GRC have changed sex.

But really, what the GRA/GRC does is to acknowledge that living as & presenting as the opposite gender [role] can, in some cases be recognised as a change of sex.

So I wondered if the legal academics running the research project are so used to the sleight of hand of the GRA, and the conflation of sex and gender for legal reasons in the GRA, that they forgot that there are broader, non-specialist legal uses of the terms.

LassWiADelicateAir · 23/10/2018 00:17

Its so badly written, I assumed it was a student project

It was dreadful.

Velella · 22/10/2018 23:09

JFC! I have done it but how on earth they will get anything meaningful out of it with the constant conflation of sex and gender is anyone's guess.

I'd encourage everyone to do it and make very good use of the frequent text boxes to make the point (over and over and over again!)

Action for Trans Health

Well, they're highly unlikely to have the care of their own children to think about, are they?

ShineOnHarvestMoon · 22/10/2018 21:29

Well, I've completed it, much to the detriment of my blood pressure. As an academic I was surprised & a bit shocked at how much the survey confuses sex and gender. I might say 'typical lawyers' but I won't

Enterthewolves · 22/10/2018 11:15

I did it; started the other day and had to stop and clam down for a bit. I slated the questionnaire at the end and have just emailed the university to say I think it is deeply flawed and do not want any of my tick box answers used unless they guarantee t use them in conjunction with my written comments.

BettyDuMonde · 22/10/2018 11:14

Re: Fae’s thread.

Action for Trans Health wanted birth certificates banned entirely - no ducks given that birth certificates are a human right and in many cases prove both a childs’ existence in the world (making it harder to sell/traffic/kill the child) and confer the child’s right to a nationality, ie, a nation whose government becomes responsible for their wellbeing, especially in the absence of a parent.

But you know, lady feelz for middle aged white dudes are more important than a girl child’s right not to be disappeared.

Safeguarding. Safeguarding. Safeguarding.

'this is a poorly written survey as it persistently and mistakenly conflates the terms sex and gender. I also suggest the authors of the survey educated themselves on intersex issues, as many questions betray a lack of understanding of intersex people and experience.'

You were way politer than me Blush

Natsku · 22/10/2018 08:02

Urgh that took ages as I had to keep correcting the questions. I was worried too about them only using the clicked answers so I clicked neither agree nor disagree for the ones where that would be more worrying and then explained in the comment box what my actual answer was.

FWRLurker · 22/10/2018 06:24

I took it, it was about an hour and a half to do. I thought most of the questions were answerable under my definition of gender as being the social category and expectations imposed unconsciously by members of society on the basis of their recognition of an individuals' biological sex. In a few cases I put "I don't know" and explained that the question was not parsable given the definition I was using.

I think that it was at least more balanced than the consultation (which I did not take as I am American but I did read).

ContentiousOne · 21/10/2018 23:02

I just did this survey - my feedback at the end was 'this is a poorly written survey as it persistently and mistakenly conflates the terms sex and gender. I also suggest the authors of the survey educated themselves on intersex issues, as many questions betray a lack of understanding of intersex people and experience.'

It was a very frustrating experience.

Beagadorsrock · 21/10/2018 22:58

Same worries, same anger here. What a bunch of bollocks. I felt like I was talking to a toddler, "what would you lose if there was no distinction male/female?" er, the EA protected characteristics of sex and maternity, for one!

Vixxxy · 21/10/2018 21:28

Annoyingly, some of the answers that I gave could potentially be used in a way I wouldn’t want if my accompanying comments were disregarded.

Yes, I am a bit worried about that too. That they will just disregard the actual comments and only go for the clicked answer.

Sandsnake · 21/10/2018 21:25

I had a look and then thought that I’d fill it out when I saw the initial questions about sex / gender. Then it started to weirdly conflate the two but I had spent too long on my initial answers so didn’t want to give up! Annoyingly, some of the answers that I gave could potentially be used in a way I wouldn’t want if my accompanying comments were disregarded. It was confusing and frustrating. Think probably still worthwhile as think was able to clearly communicate that I believed the shift in the law that they were advocating ‘researching’ was ridiculous.

MIdgebabe · 21/10/2018 21:22

It’s not to suit 1%, it’s to suit the approximately 20% of the Male population who think women are just there for sex.

Why 20%?... so around 20 to 25% of women have faced serious sexual abuse. Typival offenders have committed 4 offences, so we might say around 5% of men are offenders. But more offenses increases probability of conviction and many men may just not follow up on their thoughts out of fear of being caught, so there will be more men who have those thoughts than men who act illegally upon them

Trousered · 21/10/2018 21:15

So, what they are suggesting is rewriting the entirety of sex based law to suit less than 1% of the population.

When you think about it from the perspective of male sexual rights it's not that surprising is it? Why wouldn't they want to make every aspect of their sex lives unchallengeable, and undisputable? It's been that way for millennia, this is just one aspect of it. Women have been persuaded to do this legwork for them again, note how many nice women there are at the meeting happily putting together this horrendous men's rights survey.

Trousered · 21/10/2018 21:02

A couple of videos from Sheila Jeffreys explains it all - breaking down legal boundaries is the end goal of fetishists, they don't want legal restrictions which can be used to exclude them.

I found this very interesting guardian article while I was searching. The Guardian was a useful paper all those years ago..

I thought I'd do the survey first, so my answers would be my own, not influenced by comments on here. Unfortunately it looks like they're going to assume everyone from MN is using a standard response, as I made very similar comments about sex/ gender. I also got angrier as I went through. I wish I could just find it amusing it's so ridiculous...but so much money went into this!

ijustwannadance · 21/10/2018 20:43

It is very sinister. Looks like they are purposely mixing up sex and gender to get the results they want.
If you ask an average member of the public if women should have same gender spaces they would probably say yes because they think it means sex.

Language is crucial.

IFeelSorryForMillie · 21/10/2018 20:14

Trousered I'm not filling it in. I am more concerned by your OP and your post 17.25.

The question is WHY is all this money being poured into this? WHY are certain organisations going to be consulting on and advising on policies and how to market it them to public, throughout changes in the law?

it does look like a long long game with all notion of sex being wiped off the board, as the End Game.

I could have the wrong end of stick though i've done it before

JayneW63 · 21/10/2018 20:02

My partner had to ask me to stop screaming at the computer.

And most of my answers were , I do not understand this question, do you mean sex or gender?

Melanippe · 21/10/2018 19:32

That is one of the most poorly constructed questionnaires I have ever seen. I would be very interested to see the Cronbach's Alpha results of it's reliability and validity, because I would guess they would be well below the threshold. It reads like an over enthusiastic GCSE student's class test.

BollocksToBrexit · 21/10/2018 19:29

Same.

I'm so confused about the way they're asking about gender. I know what my sex is and how that affects life and attitudes etc but I haven't go a fucking clue about 'my gender'. What does it even mean?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/10/2018 19:23

Filled it in. Got really quite cross doing so. Relieved my crossness by using the final box to tell them just what I thought of their survey

Me three.
