Attitudes to Gender - a survey being used to write a new gender bill in the UK

What is the purpose of the study?
This survey is part of the Future of Legal Gender (FLaG) project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (2018-2021). It explores 1) whether people should have a female/male legal status assigned at birth; and 2) how we could change the way that female/male and other gender categories are used in UK law.
Who is doing this research and why?
Professor Davina Cooper (King’s College London) leads the overall project and Professor Elizabeth Peel (Loughborough University) is leading this part of the research.
We want to make sure that the research is informed by the experiences and views of a wide range of people. Thank you for sharing your opinions and contributing to the project. You can read more about why we are doing the project, and the research team here.

Not sure- overall 3 yrs project, but there is an address provided for queries about the project if you go to : futureoflegalgender.kcl.ac.uk

When does this close?

ChattyLion · 28/11/2018 02:10

as there are two threads on this... ahem, ‘research’ project Hmm.. let’s point them to each other to help people keep track: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3419517-The-future-of-legal-gender-survey?pg=1&order=

Jux · 28/11/2018 00:54

Most of the comments boxes were filled with " please define your terms and stop conflating the two; I cannot answer this question in its current form" or words to that effect.

This might have passed muster as first draft in first year, or maybe a cautionary example before students tried drafting a questionnaire for the first time.

It is truly appalling.

And for that someone got paid??!!!!! Which instituion? I hope I don't know anyone who went there.

MrGHardy · 09/11/2018 20:42

"The law and government are key forces when it comes to creating, maintaining and enforcing a system of binary gender (i.e. female/male)."

they actually think female/male is a gender thing, not sex.

Peakpants · 09/11/2018 20:38

Yes, I ID as black and I also ID as quadriplegic. In reality, my skin burns to a crisp in the sun and I have just been for a jog, but who gives a shit about that because what’s in my head is what roolz.

Peakpants · 09/11/2018 20:36

On the project’s website it says ‘everyone is assigned a legal gender at birth’. How could they have got funding when they get something like that so extremely and fundamentally wrong. No- sex is observed and recorded and good job too or we wouldn’t have a record of discrimination.
These people are either very stupid/deluded or very sinister.

MrGHardy · 09/11/2018 20:25

"do you identify as part of a minority ethnic/ racial community "

How can you take any research on this matter seriously, if people already have these kinds of assumption, and use this kind of language.

MrGHardy · 09/11/2018 20:21

"Does your current sex/gender match the sex you were given at birth? "

Yes
No

I wasn't flipping "given" a sex.

This survey is not done in good faith.

UpstartCrow · 09/11/2018 19:34

I'm so relieved other people also found it badly written, I was starting to wonder if it was as bad as I had remembered. I'm shocked to the core that this is the standard of academic research on so critical an issue.

Peakpants · 09/11/2018 19:19

I have completed the survey. It is utter utter bullocks and I am shocked that these people a) call themselves lawyers and b) managed to get three quarters of a million to conduct this joke piece of research.
I hope to fuck that at least one of them wakes the hell up and realises what they are actually doing here. They essentially are seeking to replace sex with gender identity. Horrific.
And this is not just a PhD project- the PhD is a small part of it. This survey was apparently written by a professor. I’m not sure what to say really.
Plus the advisory board includes Alex ‘there are limits to sexual autonomy’ Sharpe. This project, which is led by women, actually will do untold damage to female rights. I don’t think people like Professor Cooper give a tiny rat’s arse about the rights of ordinary women though. Her writing strongly suggests ivory tower syndrome.

Even though it’s infuriating, I would urge you all to complete it so that they are given the strong message that this is a load of balls and very very harmful.

On the plus side, I can’t see even the maddest government ever adopting anything any of these woke people have to say, but it’s an annoying waste of tax-payer money all the same.

RunningWild12 · 09/11/2018 15:18

God I need a gin! I just completed that. What in all hell was it? Seriously this is getting huge amounts of public money thrown at it, there are academics with Prof in front of their name compiling this twaddle - for what?
Reads like it was written by a school child trying desperately to be cool. Does no-one study methodology any more before embarking on 'research'?
Shocking. Truly shocking. I'm with CuriousaboutSamphire although I am not a researcher myself, but have family and friends who are.

Racecardriver · 09/11/2018 14:12

Standards have really slipped at Kings college. That was very poorly worded.

UrethaFranklyn · 09/11/2018 13:10

It really is the most stupidly-constructed pile of garbage, inconsistently conflating "Sex" and "Gender" as though the two are the same. Poorly-worded questions, nonsensical hypotheses, all very depressing if this is representative of the standard of research. Must go and open some wine immediately.

Stuffofawesome · 08/11/2018 13:32

just done it and it is appalling and exhausting. Would have thought 2 professors could have done better or did they delegate to a student and not bother to check it. Utter waste of money and think question wording totally invalidates results. I did rant at every box.

Thegirlinthefireplace · 08/11/2018 12:52

Second question ". Does your current sex/gender match the sex you were given at birth?" Don't even know how to answer that, I wasn't "given" a sex at birth

theOtherPamAyres · 08/11/2018 10:51

I see that the Equalities and Human Rights Commission has advertised the survey to the masses on Twitter.

It is already getting comments about how poorly written and biased it is

theOtherPamAyres · 08/11/2018 10:27

@stumbled

You are right: it needs someone with expertise to critique the survey.

You would think that the last people to carry out research into the legal status of 'gender' would be people who have an agenda.

stumbledin · 08/11/2018 01:01

Hi - I'm a long term fan of mumsnet and look forward each day to reading the feminists threads.

But I had to join because I think it is vital that the survey is boycotted and we each take the time to report it not just because it conflates sex with gender but it is invalid as a survey as it makes questions compulsory but only gives you one or two options which if you dont accept you cant complete the survey.

They academics have received an enourmous amont of money and yet no one seems to have bothered to check if they are qualified to carry it out.

I have had a small amount of training in structuring surveys and this one just fails from the start.

It would help (I know how bad people are at accepting they may have made a mistake) that someone who is qualified did a critique of its structure.

The ESRC represents 7 UK research groups. they should be challenged.

The GRA survey was almost as bad.

It just isn't acceptable that we are put through these false tests to challenge what may be used to change or make new laws.

The Corporation of London one is another example. And it just seems that because so many took the time to do the survey to say how awful it was, they are now just boasting and saying how sucessful it was, and have had to get in outside help to complete the analysis. And you can bet whoever is being paid to do this is also being paid to ignore all those who completed it to be able to say it was invalid.

arranfan · 07/11/2018 23:59

Nudging this as something that might benefit from the input of women with diverse experiences and views.

Does anyone have any additional resources for responding that they might highlight, please?

Is it plausible that the survey might be amended to improve its clarity if complaints are lodged in sufficient numbers?

Electron1 · 01/11/2018 22:52

If anyone has time to look at this survey I think it's important as it will feed back to the government on attitudes to sex based protections.

needmorespace · 24/10/2018 23:24

I completed but highlighted that it was SEX in each of the comment boxes. I made my feelings clear on the integrity of the survey at the end saying that the questions made no sense in most cases because of the conflation of sex/gender.
FFS - what a load of naval gazing bollocks
