So who have you convinced to respond to the GRA consultation?

I have got my parents and my sister to submit FPFW’s one click response, plus my sister’s friend has done it too. Myself and my partner have filled it out the long way, and another woman who works with me who I alerted is filling it out for herself and with her elderly mother, plus she said there were two other women filling it out after she told them about it. So that’s nine people who wouldn’t have done it if I hadn’t brought their attention to it, plus there could be other people who I don’t even know about, people who I’ve given leaflets to, people who have seen my posts on social media and people who I’ve chatted to on the bus etc. That’s quite a ripple effect.

Who have you got to fill out the consultation?

DP and a close friend, both of whom used the FPFW template responses - that's all. I don't tend to talk much about this stuff IRL.

I'll be fascinated to see how many responses they get on each side - 53,000 is a lot to wade through.

  • Doggy lady was so shocked.

Emoticons seem to be being omitted for me.

Iused2BanOptimist · 22/10/2018 09:11

DH has a work colleague who refers to herself as transsexual. She has had years of invasive surgery and is really a very complex character. I am more than happy to refer to her as "she". She is totally against the idea that people can just announce that they are now a woman and be treated as such.

I think it's hugely disrespectful of the struggles of people like this to distill it all into a feeling that can quickly be appeased by a simple on line form filling exercise. And really shows a shocking lack of understanding of the whole issue imo.

Iused2BanOptimist · 22/10/2018 09:06

A friend and a couple of family members. I'm rather pleased that a dear doggy lady who lurks on Twitter, keeping her own account private, mostly following animal related accounts was rather bemused when I came out GC on twitter as my tweets changed from mainly archers and inanities to lots of GC stuff. Anyway she took a link from one of my tweets and looked at the FPFW videos and was so she has done hers as a result.

Huge congratulations and thanks to all you clever and hardworking ladies at FPFW, it's been a brilliant campaign and has really made a difference.

could be totally wrong but I am sure I recall some supporters of Stonewall / Mermaid canvassing towards youngsters in helping with them the GRA Consultation. As I say I could be wrong I would have to trawl through all posts to confirm if that correct.

You're not.

IKeepFlouncing · 21/10/2018 20:09

Tanith yes I know stonewall have as I’m sure there was some joke that Haddock used there prefill form.

It never even occurred to me to approach even my younger female relatives, I left that responsiblilty with parents.

nauticant · 21/10/2018 17:18

A couple of friends who are Conservative voters. Until I took them through it, they would have laughed in my face if I'd tried to convince them into a feminist world view. I was surprised that I was able to get them on board so straightforwardly.

I then tried with a couple of Labour voters who responded like I was a bigot for coming out with "attitudes from half a century ago". Those friendships are now in the balance. Particularly because I was told that it was right for Karen White to have been incarcerated in HMP New Hall and the real problem was that that women's prison didn't have a secure unit to place White in.

LaundryLaundryLaundry · 21/10/2018 16:58

Mine's done, finally.

I will be sitting down with three adults in my family to complete it with them tonight (one of the quick linky ones) and think about 10 friends have done it too (not sure whether they wrote answers or submitted the one from FPFW or whether they did it as a result of my efforts or were doing it anyway.) Three friends have also gone on and networked the link as well as posting persuasive comments so hopefully they have been busy working their networks too. The extension has really helped because I only worked up enough courage to go nuclear about this on Facebook earlier in the week. Wish I'd done it sooner but I hardly see any of those people IRL any more as I've moved away, so it always felt like a risk.

In total then 13 I know of plus me.

Tanith · 21/10/2018 12:37

Ikeepflouncing No problem. I’ve been here a while: I know what it’s been like.
I know the Green Party had a pre-written option. I can’t remember if Stonewall does/did.

PiperPublickOccurrences · 21/10/2018 12:24

I've filled it in and DH has too.

DH has a work colleague who refers to herself as transsexual. She has had years of invasive surgery and is really a very complex character. I am more than happy to refer to her as "she". She is totally against the idea that people can just announce that they are now a woman and be treated as such.

DH was initially very much "don't see the problem, live and let live" but the whole Guides thing has really hit home as we have a 13 year old Guide daughter. We've both filled in the consultation although I have serious doubts how much attention the govt pay to these things. I filled in the Scottish one too and they ignored any comments which didn't back what they wanted to hear, which is that transwomen are women. Hmm

IKeepFlouncing · 21/10/2018 12:20

Tanith. - ok as you can see am but defensive on here, which is a joke as it’s only the Internet. Am sure there are more all I know is Fair Play has been a good send with the form, especially if like me I prefer layman style questions, plus I know of one mum who is dyslexic also I don’t recall the consultation having a selection if English not your first language or require form in any other format to cater for other needs. I could be wrong

Ta1kinpeace
"How do I argue with people who say that a woman can have a penis and testicles if she says she is a woman?"
What's more important: respecting Ian Huntley's new gender identity, or preventing the next Ian Huntley from hiding behind self-id in order to gain access to young girls in single sex spaces?

Soyalatteforme · 21/10/2018 11:52

My DH, Uncle, 2 colleagues and 3 friends.

Tanith · 21/10/2018 11:48

Ikeepflouncing I submitted last week. There are accusations flying around here about the FPFW “putting words in people’s mouths”. I’d like to counter them.

doublethink · 21/10/2018 00:15

My husband (who now checks reads the feminism board on a daily basis Grin), several real life friends, and I've been posting on fb so am hoping a few 'lurkers' will have filled it in. I've also done some leafletting and written to several organisations.

It feels good to be part of a movement, knowing that if all the women on here are speaking to friends then we are having a large influence collectively.

ThePrincipal · 21/10/2018 00:06

I was extremely disappointed at a male colleagues who, although initially didn’t know anything about it, and when I started talking about self d, he said but that’s complete non sense, and I said well that’s nonsense being embedded into law.

I sent him the links and in the end he just couldn’t be bothered, even though he had two teen daughters.

IKeepFlouncing · 21/10/2018 00:06

Hot I would send a message or speak to your trans friend and explain where you are coming from before you post. FB I posted Tricky Dicky video first as draw them in get their attention. Not sure if I lost any friends I’ve just been posting all revelant women’s rights stuff including about NAS etc. 2 male friends sent me a message by WhatsApp they signed up.

No one else (family already aware) They probably think I been hacked as my fb usually deactivated unless I need sweary rant

PurpleCrowbar · 20/10/2018 23:59

An entire sixth form, plus multiple mums who attended our meeting; but it doesn't count as we're overseas - but still, our feminist society is on a roll! I was a guest speaker, touched on Karen White amidst a general speech about worldwide feminism & that was quite enough.

I've been vocal on FB & responses have been positive. Also, they're starting to shift from people PMing to say 'I agree, but I wouldn't dare say so publically' to likes & shares.

StormCloudsDoClear · 20/10/2018 23:53

My husband shocked me and asked me to show him how to do it.

He was asking me the other day what I was reading about, and I explained about self identification and basically the fact that men could use it to enter female only spaces/changing rooms and so forth. Also explained the recent sex crimes against women in female prisons by transgender inmates.

He suddenly became enraged and demanded I show him how to do it! Took me by surprise normally he just nods and does the "that's interesting dear". All night then though I did have him sounding off about "I swear of a bloke went in to a changing room with you I'd grip him" conversation, but whatever helps you process it all dear haha.

IKeepFlouncing · 20/10/2018 23:52

Why Tanith? You only need to submit once

IKeepFlouncing · 20/10/2018 23:50

Lots including some in professional jobs.

I am real proud of myself (not often I pay myself on the back) but this has really taken me out of my comfort zone as I’m very quiet private person in r/l but I have spoken to people I wouldn’t normally have courage too.

I have an obessive nature well I’m told from last time I had to take on some big official company on my own. I can’t let it go when standing up for something that is doing wrong against another.

nononsene · 20/10/2018 23:23

Several friends today were posting about Rachel McKinnon (thanks for peak transing folk Rachel) and how unfair it was today on FB. I can’t comment publicly due to my job but messaged them privately and all used the fair play for women one click response to the consultation and shared it under their comments so hopefully others will have done so too.

Tanith · 20/10/2018 22:35

Can I ask which organisations are using a pre-written reply option? The Green Party were the first I heard of, FPFW have one - anyone else?

failingatlife · 20/10/2018 22:34

Got my parents, brother sister, DS & DH to do it. My DM is raging and has told anyone who will listen so hopefully some of them will have done it too.

PerverseConverse · 20/10/2018 22:18

I've posted several times about it on Facebook. No one has commented but no one has de-friended me either for mistakenly thinking me a bigot so I hope people have read my posts and acted on them too. We can but hope.
