But why have there been no problems in countries that already have self id?

There have been.

It becomes harder to record them of course.

But why have there been no problems in countries that already have self id?

If you dig around, there clearly are problems. Women being thrown out of homeless shelters after expressing fear at having to share overnight accommodation with be-penised individuals. Women being assaulted in unisex changing rooms and showers (Target in America, that Canadian campus which introduced then had to remove mixed sex showers). It's just not making it into the mainstream media.

That's why I am so, so, so grateful to the Times, the Spectator, even the Mail and the Express and Sun (and finally, this week the Telegraph), for actually covering this stuff over here. Even the Guardian and Observer have had to carry a couple of GC letters in the last week simply because the intellectual credentials of the authors are so beyond reproach.

Jemima - agree with your point about new/inexperienced chief execs and trustees. I think age is relevant too. Either they arrive with these views or are easily picked off and influenced by those with an agenda.

merrymouse · 16/10/2018 21:02

happy, define ‘problem’. The concept of segregating people according to their ‘identity’ and deliberately ignoring the real consequences of being born female is intrinsically harmful.

There is still plenty that needs to be done to remove the barriers that prevent women from engaging in society on equal terms with men, and those barriers have nothing to do with a desire to wear a skirt.

Self ID (and unfortunately some existing legislation) enshrines sexism in law.

What would solving the problem look like? I think we should aim for a society that accepts people as individuals regardless of how much they conform to gender stereotypes, but self id doesn’t achieve that.

“Nobody seems to be complaining” has long been the claim of people who want to sweep problems under the carpet, whether thats the Catholic Church or Harvey Weinstein’s enablers.

Thanks Materialist. So it was the economy (stupid) and a general disaffection with elites.

Unfortunately Trump provides the climate that is drawing us towards this period of authoritarianism. Bad guys to the left and to the right of us. ☹

happydappy2 · 16/10/2018 20:39

There is clearly something very very wrong happening here regards the dismantling of safeguards to protect women & children-we can all see it. But why have there been no problems in countries that already have self id? Are we saying this country in particular has a problem with paedophilia? Or is it the ease that laws can be passed to permit things to happen? Am particularly interested in the proposed hate speech laws against men-which seem bizarre & unnecessary

FermatsTheorem · 16/10/2018 20:37

Wow, that is fascinating about Mook, Materialist, and dammit if that isn't the most plausible explanation of why May was mad enough to call that election that I've heard.

I think a lot of people are beginning to register the fact that we (the western world in general) are sleepwalking into a period of authoritarianism - this was in today's Washington Post:
www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/we-need-the-exhausted-majority-to-speak-up/2018/10/15/160440fa-d090-11e8-83d6-291fcead2ab1_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.c3104055120c&wpisrc=nl_most&wpmm=1

It's interesting in that it feels like the author is groping towards something but hasn't joined the dots yet. In particular, it's almost as though he's subconsciously aware that this is a problem for the left as well as the right, but such is his ingrained way of thinking about the world, all his conscious examples of the process at work are from the right being authoritarian. (Note, those of us on the left here who've got caught up in fighting the genderist religion over here may equally have taken our eye off the ball when it comes to the rise of the authoritarian right in this country... see for e.g. today's "hate crime may be extended to include misandry" headlines).

BlackForestCake · 16/10/2018 20:34

In the Judge Dredd comics, there are so many laws in the Mega-CIty that every citizen is guilty of something. In a society like that no citizen can oppose the government without fearing for their freedom.

Material - great post. Especially your point here:

And I’m sure the UK, because of it’s small size and the speed with which a centralized parliamentary national government can pass legislation (compared to the decentralized non-parliamentary US form) must have seemed, from the outside, like an easy win

Makes sense that Scotland and Ireland were picked off first then

Girl Guides makes more sense in this wider context - someone on twitter made point that for a charity of its size it has an unusual degree of inexperienced (as in not trustees elsewhere) trustees, the majority of whom were recruited fairly recently after an overhaul. Also relevant is the govt announcement that it would fund 5500 places for disadvantaged children at guides/ scouts etc

Also Julie Bindel who tweeted recently that she's met Stonewall CEO Ruth Hunt before she interviewed for the post and discussed what her take was going to be on the trans issue. Then her opinion then was that Stonewall should help the 'T' set up its own organisation. This was echoed by another journalist.

Needmoresleep · 16/10/2018 20:11

Veering further off topic, but I am sure that Brexit, Trump and other strange results head a lot to do with ordinary people feeling their concerns were not being heard. And worse. People in insecure employment who voiced concerns about immigration were branded racist. Women now are branded TERFs.

ToeToToe · 16/10/2018 20:05

That is a very interesting question, vicviking.

vicviking · 16/10/2018 19:53

Materialist. Slightly off topic but to what extent do you think genderism lost the democrats the election resulted in trump?

OvaHere · 16/10/2018 19:47

This is an old article from 2014 but lists the healthcare interests of MPs, some who are still in government.

TerfedOff · 16/10/2018 19:43

My MP is at the same opinion. He thinks a bill for self ID would be heavily opposed however there's nothing to do at the moment as there is no bill so he's concentrating on brexit.

I agree with Materialist on where some of the money might be coming from (but think there's more to it, ie. it's not just Pritzker). The UK is very clearly a test case, for both sides actually - if it can be pushed through in the UK then other countries will follow, if we can stop it in the UK then that may turn the tide internationally because there will then be a precedent for a "first world" democracy putting the brakes on and reevaluating.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 16/10/2018 19:37

The spanner women have thrown in the works is certain to be creating apoplexy in some quarters

Oh I hope so Materialist, I do hope so

Muuuuuuuum · 16/10/2018 19:29

I spoke to my MP on the phone last night. They are strongly opposed to GRA reform as proposed and claim many in Westminster share this view. But speaking out about this leads to time consuming and energy sapping pile ons, so they are waiting for legislation to be proposed before speaking out. Right now Brexit is the priority.

I hope this is true.

Because no one can stop individual creepy men fucking women over using this law.

Datun · 16/10/2018 19:24

long grass is the best option for now while the genderists busily show everyone their true colours

That's what I think. Patience, sunlight and handing them a never ending supply of spades.

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 16/10/2018 19:24

Maybe it's a lady MP?

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 16/10/2018 19:21

yeah, not Gove. I'd be astonished at Sarah Vine writing the articles she has if that were the case

spreadsheet Phil?

Rightly or wrongly, it'd be pretty much guaranteed to get through as MPs take the chance to show off their woke credentials and pick up their Brownie points

see, I think there are enough Tory MPs who know exactly what their local party would make of them saying that people can change sex and more importantly, a Tory Government endorsing forced speech. I really think plenty would rebel.

the problem would be the bloody labour party though

long grass is the best option for now while the genderists busily show everyone their true colours
