Disabled toilets/all gender washroom

Wtf? I don't want to share the toilet that I need to use when I'm having a bad flare up with parents and their babies and now people of any gender who don't fancy going in the segregated toilets. Make the toilets with a third gender neutral space but stay out of ours!

Seafour · 16/10/2018 08:57

Zzzzz read my post again and work out how I check, of course if I'm in doubt I don't dive in and say anything, but nearly always it's totally fucking obvious from the look on someone's face, their body language or the embarrassed giggle as they half apologise and say "oh I didn't realise it was disabled, oh there was a queue for the ladies, I was in a rush, there's so much more space for shopping bags in there, the non disabled toilet was occupied, oh sorry I didn't realise there were any disabled customers, insert your own crass fucking comment" all accompanied by a tinkly laugh of course. Or try the " oh err sorry" as someone stares at the floor or just barges past me and tries to escape my resting bitch death stare, trust me it's totally fucking obvious so I will chase the fuckers down and shout at them in public on behalf of the person sitting in their own piss or shit, clinging to a bursting stoma bag, trying to calm their autistic child, comfort their parent who only leaves the house once a fucking fortnight because it's so difficult and stressful. I've been living this life for years and I've never got it wrong so have a Biscuit

My DH has MS. This causes issues with his bladder as well as many other things like walking. A few weeks ago we went the theatre with 2 of our DC.

Unfortunately DHs badder decided to misbehave meaning he was up & down to the toilet several times unsuccessfully trying to empty his bladder. When his bladder finally complied the only disabled toilet was oocupied. Other toilets were up at least one flight of stairs.

DH had an embarrassing accident & missed the rest of the show changing clothes. The woman using the facility appeared able bodied, I have no idea if she had a disability or not.

My point being that disabled toilets are often 1 toilet for who knows how many. It is out of order that the small provision is being abused in this way! Disabled facilities should not be eroded in this way! Taking over disabled facilities is not the answerAngry

sashh · 16/10/2018 08:40

@AssassinatedBeauty so what if the disabled person has a child and needs to change them ? I don't see an issue with changing a child in a disabled toilet no

Although virtually every accessible toilet has a baby changing table, they are never at the right height for a wheelchair user.

I NEED to use the disabled loo most of the time but actually I think this is a good solution, as long as priority is given to those who need it.

I often go to a pub that is very child friendly so often is full of parents with small children, the disabled toilet is in almost constant use by parents but I have never had to wait.

I know TRAs object to the disabled loo becoming the de facto trans toilet and they complain that it is hurtful, causes stress and trauma but I think that is great for the GRA.

Disabled men and women have to use the same space, but not at the same time and we share it with parents and babies. So either we are also traumatised and triggered and should have separate male and female accessible toilets with baby changing elsewhere or the TRAs are talking tosh.

i live in a country and a city where these types of facilities are commonplace (wheelchair accessible and family friendly). the number of handicapped people is very small so i feel it's a good use of space.
at our pool we would have a row of about 3 of these designated toilets in a row.

waterlego6064 · 16/10/2018 00:25

And then read Sparkly’s post!

waterlego6064 · 16/10/2018 00:23

Lara, please read Seafour’s post. Carefully. Then read it again. And then please ‘check your privilege’. Such a cliched phrase but absolutely applies here. I’m taken aback at how casual and breezy you are about it.

Seafour · 16/10/2018 00:17

Lara09 if you take 30 seconds then you're clearly in danger if you ever piss in my city and I happen to be waiting, one for using a disabled toilet and two for not washing your fucking hands.

Agree with the pp selfish as fuck

WomanDictionaryDefined · 16/10/2018 00:17

It's fucking appalling how the UK treats people with disabilities, yet another protected class on the Equality Act shoved aside. Seriously why not just sort men's toilets out so they are all gender neutral, they don't give a damn, they'll pee in front of anyone.

Sparklywolf · 16/10/2018 00:16

There are many different types of people with disabilities who need to use accessible toilets. Causing them to wait while "any and all genders" exercise their right to use a newly gender inclusive toilet can have a variety of harmful outcomes for many if them.

Some may find they wet or soil themselves, some may become extremely anxious and stressed at the thought they may wet or soil themselves or that a catheter/stone bag may burst, some may be using crutches/sticks/other walking equipment and suffer increased pain from having to stand and wait.

My elderly Father uses a wheelchair and has dementia, he is doubly incontinent so potentially we will be waiting outside the only toilet we can use, with increasing foul odours coming from a pad which needs changing and he will be losing dignity from that and from my having to repeatedly tell him in front if other people that we're waiting to use the loo and change it. Of course all this may be true while we wait for another person with a disability to exit, but if we're waiting for someone with no medical need to use a disabled facility it compounds the frustration, embarrassment and general stress of the experience.

Disability makes every part of life harder, why are we expected to sacrifice the few concessions society makes in order to appease people who just want public recognition and validation of their "unique gender identity"???

That 60 seconds you may pop in to use it could well be over 5 repetitions of "why are we waiting, whats that smell, I feel uncomfortable" for us. So yes, I do think it is a selfish attitude and yes it does make a difference. Not to mention one person doing it normalises it for others around them.

Seafour · 16/10/2018 00:10

I'm a wheelchair user with complex spinal cord injuries and I'm not at all happy about this. I live in a city with an excellent shopping centre with lots of toilets on all levels, including parent and child toilets for mums and dads to use, there are a handful of radar key operated toilets reserved for disabled people and still more that are open access. The open access disabled toilets are often occupied by able bodied lazy fuckers who can't be bothered to use the many toilets accessible to them but not to me, do I have to assume that they are all trans from now on? Give them their own fucking toilets my life is difficult enough when I need to catheterise myself to piss anyway, this usually involves having to clean the toilet first with my one fully working limb because someone has left it in a disgusting state.
I have been known to wheel after a barely apologetic shop assistant in the past shouting comments like "working here does not give you that privilege, I bet your parents are very proud of you " and other things. Before someone berates me about hidden disabilities of course I always check, there is always something about the look of horror and embarrassment on the faces of the guilty as they come face to face with a wheelchair that kind of gives them away though. A genuine user will always smile and offer to hold the door.
As for disabled toilets at motorway services, they are vile, every trucker in the universe seems to have a fucking radar key - disgusting bastards, I'd rather take my chances in the ladies and hope for an extra wide door. So no I don't think it's a good idea and I'm not a fan.

WomanDictionaryDefined · 16/10/2018 00:09

To my mind co opting any disabled use facility for non-disabled is removing the use of that facility because it robs people of time, people who have no other option. If you have another option then use it.

waterlego6064 · 16/10/2018 00:09

I think that's a fair solution. Everyone has to pee and I would much rather the Karen Whites in a separate bathroom.

I’m sure this isn’t what you intended, but in the context of this thread, that rather sounds like you’re happy to put the Karen Whites in the disabled facilities? So putting another, potentially very vulnerable, group at risk?

waterlego6064 · 16/10/2018 00:06

Er, in lara09s defence, she sounds like using a disabled loo is the correct option for her if there are queues etc. Would it be better for her to not make it in time by queuing?

What? Because she said that she has trouble holding it in? Well, unless her weak bladder/pelvic floor (which is a condition I’m sure many of us here can identify with), is actually a disability, no, she has no right to use the disabled facility. It’s not difficult to understand.

TheFairyCaravan · 16/10/2018 00:01

This isn't acceptable at all but it was so predictable. Accessible toilets mean they are accessible to people with disabilities, not accessible to all. Even disabled car parking spaces are starting to be known as accessible spaces. Language is changing.

Disabled people need these toilets and they were campaigned long and hard for. Service providers are lazy which is why the baby change unit is in so many accessible toilets and now they're wanting us to share with another group of people. I'm almost glad I'm too ill to go out much but when I do I can hold a wee in for hours.

WomanDictionaryDefined · 15/10/2018 23:44

You just write that they are being disablist and breaching the Equality Act in the process and copy your local MP in and local carers organisation (they will forward it to the biggest hitter), state a date you want answer by and if you don't get the right one go to the press.

I would start with "How dare you.."

To the people on this thread who think any of this situation is acceptable, you are also disablist.

theOtherPamAyres · 15/10/2018 23:39

To me, it looks like the owner/management have complied with their obligations to provide a facility designed for disabled users.

I don't think owner/management is obliged to 'police' the users to ensure that only disabled people get access.

However, the owner/management could be accused of making access unnecessarily difficult for disabled users because all and sundry are allowed access. Surely, that is not in the spirit of the law?

In fact - I'm going out on a limb here - a disabled user is being unfairly treated. Whereas other users have a choice, the disabled user does not and is being inconvenienced.

I love the "but I'll only be a minute" crowd, be it disabled loos, parking bays, whatever. They don't give two fucks about making life more difficult for people with disabilities. Precious little snowflakes. Really boils my piss. Pat yourself on the back @lara09 , you're a superstar .

do all these arseholes park in disabled parking spaces too?

Probably.

The ingnorance is astounding.

MIdgebabe · 15/10/2018 22:28

GEnder dysmorphia is a disability. It is a flaw in the brain that stops these people living a normal life. I find it hard sometimes to remember that these people are different to stonewall trans people, but i am also aware that the stonewall type of trans ( tra) are trying to drum up transphobia to support their own aims and I will not let them win. So I will always try to remember the people who really have problems and are getting trampled by the high emotions caused by the TRA.

Chchchnamechanges · 15/10/2018 22:23

I’m tempted to complain to my local Tesco because over half of the cars in the disabled bays are just over large pretentious 4x4s and don’t display bAdges. Drives me mad.
