I’m thinking of applying for an opportunity on the basis of being non-binary

Don’t want to say too much about the reward on offer - a work thing, with real kudos, let’s leave it there.

But... it’s only open to people who self-identify as transgender or non-binary (or a lot of other words which, having Googled, are synonyms for the same).

Some people don't identify with any gender is one of the descriptors of what non-binary means. And that’s true of me. I don’t identify as female, I just happen to have a female body. I do “present in a feminine way” though. And I’m straight, married, still breastfeeding...

But, I can apply, right? I’m nervous, but fucked off with myself for cowering behind the parapet for this long.

But Ughhh - no one will ever abuse self-identity. Will they?

IfNotNowThenWhen1 · 09/10/2018 10:50

Ironically if you just decided one day you were a gas fitter, and went round interfering with people's gas supplies, Marc would get into a world of shit.
No Sod They would, because I would accuse them of literally killing me by implying I can't fix their boiler like a cis gas fitter.

BrownPaperTeddy · 09/10/2018 10:49

ShovingLeopard

I think you can promote opportunities for the purpose of positive discrimination for minority groups can't you? Eg all women short lists

Lweji · 09/10/2018 10:49

Definitely go.
My choice would be to dress and present as a drag queen.

More seriously, I'd be tempted to ask their definition of non-binary.
I'm great at reading maps and driving. Would that count?

pancaketosser · 09/10/2018 10:49

Invisible you're doing it wrong. If you clean the bathroom whilst you are not a woman you get extra gold stars and we can all marvel at how wonderful you are for being capable of using a cloth*.

(*I was going to say toilet brush, but I know that's a sensitive subject on MN)

Moominfan · 09/10/2018 10:45

Yea go for it! None binary basically human

LangCleg · 09/10/2018 10:45

if so many people on here fall under the trans umbrella then how are so many people SO transphobic and no one has anything to say about it?

Every LOL that was ever LOLed. Point. Head. Sailed.

Because the trans umbrella is a load of old bullshit and we're all non-binary, as the OP hopes to satirise by applying for this opportunity since she and 99% of the population is eligible.

ShovingLeopard · 09/10/2018 10:44

I'm obviously way behind the curve on this, but is it legal to promote awards/promotions/special status etc (whatever this opportunity is), on the basis of trans status?

You wouldn't be able to advertise something on the basis that the applicant needs to be Christian, or white, or Asian, or heterosexual, could you? Or could you? Am I missing something? I can't see how it is ok to only offer this to a certain section of society, especially as it doesn't specifically relate to that status.

Happy to be educated!

Noqont · 09/10/2018 10:43

You should go for it op. Why shouldn't you!

jellyfrizz · 09/10/2018 10:43

It's annoying, because gender non-binary activism and feminism are actually the same argument.

^^YES! This frustrates me no end.

malaguena · 09/10/2018 10:41

Of course there is transphobia on Mumsnet! It's rare, but someone on this very thread was told they can't be trans if they don't know what 'queer' means. It's disgusting! I suggest you could screenshot and use as evidence to post on Twitter. Or call West Yorkshire police.

Invisible1234 · 09/10/2018 10:40

If I wasn't non-binary I'd be cleaning the bathroom right now...I'm failing in my womanly duties right now. Go for it!

SodTheBloodyLotOfThem · 09/10/2018 10:37

Ironically if you just decided one day you were a gas fitter, and went round interfering with people's gas supplies, Marc would get into a world of shit.

IfNotNowThenWhen1 · 09/10/2018 10:33

I present as an old tarting slap (thank you Upstart Crow) but I identify as a 23 year old gas fitter called Marc. With a c.
Do it OP! Unless you conform absolutely to every gender stereotype about your sex, you wouldn't actually be lying anyway.

SodTheBloodyLotOfThem · 09/10/2018 10:30

Tell that to the Celts, ancient Greeks and Romans. Was Caesar trans?

Mookatron · 09/10/2018 10:23

It's annoying, because gender non-binary activism and feminism are actually the same argument, but the characteristics usually ascribed to women is that they are always wrong so obviously feminists have got it wrong and the desire to wear a dress is biologically driven Hmm

NoSquirrels · 09/10/2018 10:21

*despite you don't feel gender dysphoria or feel any dissonance with the sex you were born as ^

Gender disphoria/gender dissonance is rejecting societal expectations of gendered behaviour, isn’t it? Leaving aside body disphoria, which is separate.

If trans women are women, trans men are men, then surely women can be trans women and men can be trans men - because we believe it?

gendercritter · 09/10/2018 10:17

You don't happen to have any blue hair dye sitting at the back of your cupboard do you? Grin

I say go for it! There is no-one alive who can tell you you're not non-binary given the only way of being enby is to self-identify into that category.

I'm enby too, by the way, so solidarity sister (?!). I'm feeling very angry about Brett Kavanaugh at present. Anger definitely isn't a female emotion which is how I know I'm definitely enby. I'm also not wearing any make-up today. Tomorrow I might be male because I'm thinking of wearing trousers so it's lucky I read this post today

(And apologies for not replying to your pm about CBC - the system hasn't been letting me send any for some reason. I tried a few times)

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 09/10/2018 10:17

If Pips Bunce can throw a dress on 2 days a week still get a man's wage while winning awards for women - why can't you wear some trousers with some nice comfy shoes and identify as whatever you want to win this prize?

Womaningreen · 09/10/2018 10:14

you can be non binary

as far as I'm concerned, they are applying non binary to gender, which doesn't exist, so everyone's non binary.

just to say, I applied for something that had this kind of criteria but also included being from an ethnic minority. So I applied on that basis - it was a free training thing - but in the end, I pulled out because I couldn't bear the thought of the sorts of people who might have been on it.

Every word of my application - I mean the stuff I feel about myself - was a lie. It didn't take long to do it, chuck down some contemporary word salad etc - but in the end I just thought, this is using my free time in the company of people I'll probably hate!

jellyfrizz · 09/10/2018 10:14

if so many people on here fall under the trans umbrella then how are so many people SO transphobic

Different trans people have different biological needs however they identify.

It is not transphobic to recognise this surely?

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 09/10/2018 10:13

ughhh if you see any transphobia please do report it.
What we discuss on this board is mostly related to maintaining the sex-based provisions of women and girls, whilst maintaining that people who identify as trans should of course have all the human rights that they are entitled to, whether male or female.
I'm sure there is a degree of phobia/hate/disgust expressed on these boards - this is the world wide web after all, and users will hold the full spectrum of views - but they are in a minority.
We fight for sex-based protection and freedom from oppression, particularly of male violence and gender stereotyping.

placemats · 09/10/2018 10:12

Do it!

In the next census I'm putting myself down as male.
