Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I’m thinking of applying for an opportunity on the basis of being non-binary

Don’t want to say too much about the reward on offer - a work thing, with real kudos, let’s leave it there.

But... it’s only open to people who self-identify as transgender or non-binary (or a lot of other words which, having Googled, are synonyms for the same).

Some people don't identify with any gender is one of the descriptors of what non-binary means. And that’s true of me. I don’t identify as female, I just happen to have a female body. I do “present in a feminine way” though. And I’m straight, married, still breastfeeding...

But, I can apply, right? I’m nervous, but fucked off with myself for cowering behind the parapet for this long.

CountFosco
Transactivists appropriated the suffragette flag.

Personally, I think they are making a coded point that the Suffragettes stepped out of their expected sphere as women, and so in their eyes acted like men; which makes them non binary.

Charliethefeminist · 09/10/2018 17:02

How is it wrong?

Charliethefeminist · 09/10/2018 17:01

I'm so sorry not to have read the thread, but you are non-binary aren't you? I don't understand how it would be a lie.

I am non binary. I don't identify with the male or female gender. What feminist does? Why wouldn't it apply to you too?

Andtheresaw · 09/10/2018 17:01

Please don't do this Somer.
It's bad enough that the transwomen walk into women's protected roles without even thinking about the ramifications for women.
Please don't be the woman who squares the circle by doing the same thing in a LGBT protected role.
2 wrongs don't make a right.

donquixotedelamancha · 09/10/2018 16:56

so when an athletic trans woman wants to participate in the olympics it's the 'end of women's sports' and they're 'invading women's spaces' but when you want to participate in something that's only for trans people you can go

I have a lot of sympathy for this viewpoint. I wouldn't want GC men self identifying into opportunities for women, even though this is very effective for highlighting the stupidity of self ID.

I think it depends very much on the role and why it requires someone to self identify in this way; e.g.

  • a job addressing healthcare needs of those with gender dysphoria; not cricket to take it under false pretences.
  • a well paid boondoggle requiring a bimonthly meeting to spout gender based drivel; yep I'd cheerfully subvert it from the inside.

The question is: can the OP honestly do what is required in this role?

are you joking? non binary is trans too and if you don't even know what queer means then you don't qualify to be it

@Ughhh By enlarge the posters of MN agree with your argument (albeit sarcastically). We think words like: gay, gender dysphoria, male, female etc mean something. We object to the agenda being pushed by anti women activists that says anyone can self identify as anything and there will be no negative consequences.

The AWAs who want self ID would call your posts transphobic. They believe that saying the words 'I am non-binary' or 'I am a woman' is enough. They call discussion of biological sex or diagnosed gender dysphoria gatekeeping. They will likely harm the rights of transgender people far more than they harm the rights of women by the time this is done.

MsBeaujangles - finally an identity I can identify with!

Micke · 09/10/2018 16:12

I didn't think any thing got changed - she ran a campaign, and the government refused to make it a law that women could be forced to wear a different dress code to men (and that heels could be part of that dress code)

I mean, they'd never have employed me - but apparently the code was 2-4 inch heels - I only have 9 inch feet, so 2 inch heels are excruciating for me (if they can even be found wide enough for my feet)

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 09/10/2018 16:11

We need a 'pin the gender on the body' party game. Sort of like 'pin the tail on the donkey' but with the eleventy billion gender variations.

CountFosco · 09/10/2018 16:11

Look, you can buy this beautiful non binary flag to proudly hang above your desk.

So is that flag the Transactivists appropriating a suffragette flag or the radical feminists taking the piss. Because I'm officially confused now.

drspouse · 09/10/2018 16:07

This is one of eleventy billion genders and it means that people talking about and referring to your gender is distressing and you reject all references to your gender in favour of sex.

Hooray! I can now happily tell people not to misgender me when they call me cis.
Perfect!

LangCleg · 09/10/2018 15:46

Philippa Somerville's true identity was as a boy called Annibal.

But she gave away the cunning plan with a fan flick. I am, of course, a genuine mercenary.

MsBeaujangles · 09/10/2018 15:42

OP, it sounds to me as if you, like me, are indeed antigender. This is one of eleventy billion genders and it means that people talking about and referring to your gender is distressing and you reject all references to your gender in favour of sex.

DerelictWreck · 09/10/2018 15:42

kendodd I think she did win? It was her agency rather than the company who enforced the dress code and they got their wrists slapped

MissHoolee · 09/10/2018 15:29

Thanks for the links

DodoPatrol · 09/10/2018 15:23

I think the definition is 'don't identify with any gender AND take yourself deadly seriously AND write angsty letters to your local paper/Facebook page about people failing to notice that your email sign-off has changed to Mx'.

That should be enough.

KennDodd · 09/10/2018 15:20

Sorry, wouldn't WEAR heels.

KennDodd · 09/10/2018 15:19

Does anybody remember that receptionist working in the city who got the sack because she wouldn't water heels, took employer to court and lost? I wonder if she'd identified as trans/non-binary because she didn't conform to female stereotype if she'd have won?

Fearandsurprise · 09/10/2018 15:08

Posh pan- binary check your privilege
Grin

As Le Creuset can go from freezer to oven, should I check my privi-fridge?

Fearandsurprise · 09/10/2018 15:03

Lush also gave some definitions here:

With an nteresting comment at the end!

Fearandsurprise · 09/10/2018 15:01

The Stonewall glossary is here:

MissHoolee · 09/10/2018 14:59

Serious question. I'm confused by a lot of the terminology in terms of non- this, fluid- that etc. Is there a handy list somewhere that explains it all?

Fearandsurprise · 09/10/2018 14:57

Woks are inter-pans so should not be brought into this debate.

Micke · 09/10/2018 14:57

Absolutely! On my only visit to Tate Modern, I stomped round scoffing increasingly loudly at every bloody thing in it.

HA! ME too! (there were 2 rooms dedicated to a wierd person who sent goats skulls filled with butter to some journalist - and rather than reporting him to the police, she apparently decided he was a genius - I may have very slightly mis-represented/mis-remembered it, but that was definitely the gist I took away). I'm taking the kids to the portrait gallery when we're next in London. I reckon they'll enjoy it much more (and then I also don't have to avoid the frankly horrific section with 'adult' art at that was also at the Tate Modern when I was there)

I'm definitely non-binary (I only bought a dress recently just to try it out, otherwise I've worn trousers for the entirety of my adult life, I work in a male dominated profession, with both traditionally male and female hobbies. Oh and I forget what they call it - people who want to be in a romantic relationship before they have sex with someone (I used to think that was pretty standard, but apparently that's special) I'm one of those.

Now, looking at me, it might be hard to tell, because I'm short and dumpy and often have a couple of kids saying 'muuuum' at me - but still, by every definition (except the generally accepted one of 'adult human female') in this philosophy, I'm non-binary. (and so is everyone else I know)

Lweji · 09/10/2018 14:52

Perhaps this is why the quote was for £100 more?

Maybe. He should identify as female to pay less (or is that not legal anymore)

Lweji · 09/10/2018 14:51

Yes, but woks...
