I’m thinking of applying for an opportunity on the basis of being non-binary

Don’t want to say too much about the reward on offer - a work thing, with real kudos, let’s leave it there.

But... it’s only open to people who self-identify as transgender or non-binary (or a lot of other words which, having Googled, are synonyms for the same).

Some people don't identify with any gender is one of the descriptors of what non-binary means. And that’s true of me. I don’t identify as female, I just happen to have a female body. I do “present in a feminine way” though. And I’m straight, married, still breastfeeding...

But, I can apply, right? I’m nervous, but fucked off with myself for cowering behind the parapet for this long.

The only reason a non-binary individual would be on the receiving end of "literal violence" (Hmm) is is the person in question wouldn't shut up about it and about how their identity makes them oh-so-special. If they just went quietly about their lives nobody would even know they were non-binary.

LangCleg · 09/10/2018 18:30

What exactly do you think non binary means?

Can I give it a go?!

There is a theory that alternative culture is a precursor to the next stage of capitalism — I’ll just leave you to figure that one out for yourself.

Non binary is the perfect example. It's a classist notion attracting privileged people who could not otherwise claim marginalisation and it is spawning a hyper-capitalist market segment comprising bullshit initiatives such as the one in the OP and bullshit jobs for similarly privileged people.

AyeRobot · 09/10/2018 18:29

Surely there's a list of the binary stuff so one can decide if one is non binary?

I think there was one, wasn't there? Although Northern women caused some confusion.

VickyEadie · 09/10/2018 18:24

I find it amazing that Stonewall and supporters define trans (including non binary) as 'anyone who says they are, no questions asked', until it suits them to claim people are taking the piss or claiming to be trans or NB when they're - apparently - not.

PlantsArePeopleToo · 09/10/2018 18:21

@DakiniTawa

What exactly do you think non binary means?

LangCleg · 09/10/2018 18:21

Or smirking at the oh so witty piss taking of non binary people?

What piss taking? Either one is what one says one is, or one isn't. Not our fault the definition of non-binary is so wide it encompasses 99% of the population. Note for the future: keep it narrow and stop throwing tantrums about gatekeeping.

VickyEadie · 09/10/2018 18:20

DakiniTawa

What do you understand by the term 'non binary' and how do you know the OP is not non binary?

I'm 60. I've never had children (didn't want them). I don't wear skirts, make-up, nail polish, shoes with heels and have short hair.

Am I non binary? I think I am. Do you?

DakiniTawa · 09/10/2018 18:16

OP are you experiencing literal violence and an erased existence?

Or smirking at the oh so witty piss taking of non binary people?

Probably something to consider before you apply.

TheElementsSong · 09/10/2018 18:07

I'm very HmmHmmHmm of the phobic posters who are gatekeeping the OP's clearly authentic lived experience of being non-binary - isn't this literal violence and erasing her existence? Grin

FFSFFSFFS · 09/10/2018 17:52

This is from Lush's educational page on gender which someone linked to above

uk.lush.com/article/lets-talk-about-gender

Cisgender - (often abbreviated to simply cis) is a term for people whose gender identity matches the gender that they were assigned at birth. Cisgender may also be defined as those who have "a gender identity or perform a gender role society considers appropriate for one's gender". It is the opposite of the term transgender.

So I wonder what these gender roles are that society considers appropriate for women and at what stage does a woman become a man if she steps outside of a box?

If a woman goes to medical school - still a woman then? Okay to stay a woman if a GP but if she becomes a consultant (currently male dominated) at that stage is she not identifying with the gender role assigned to her at birth?

How many nappies does a man need to change until he crosses over the gender threshold?

Jesus wept.

This makes a mockery not only of feminism but also of people who suffer with what must be a very distressing condition of sex dysphoria.

sausagebap · 09/10/2018 17:51

genuine question, why is the word ‘folk’ always paired with trans/non-binary?

DakiniTawa · 09/10/2018 17:45

The only legal way an organisation can limit a job function to trans or non binary people is by taking positive action to help people who share that protected characteristic.

See positive action:

www.equalityhumanrights.com/en/advice-and-guidance/commonly-used-terms-equal-rights#positive

So the OP is unethical if her intentions are not to help this organisation take positive action to help trans and non binary folk.

If her intentions are genuine then she / they should go for it.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 09/10/2018 17:44

DakiniTawa I believe the OP genuinely lives a non gender binary existence, as I and many others do.
Surely you are not saying that to be ‘truly’ non-binary you have to abide by particular stereotypes of gender expression or use a limited set of pronouns for example?
I identify as agender. Therefore how I live my life is authentically agender.

Charliethefeminist · 09/10/2018 17:43

I would happily apply for the non binary role. I am non binary in terms of gender. I'm sure it's not just me.

Charliethefeminist · 09/10/2018 17:42

Wear the change
Be the change
You ARE the change

Charliethefeminist · 09/10/2018 17:41

How can you be scathing of the non-binary experience if you experience being non-binary every day. That doesn't make sense.

howlsmovingcastle84 · 09/10/2018 17:40

It's hardly scathing if you are non-binary according to the definition.

Maybe if more GC non-binary women got involved in the TRA lobby we would see some positive changes. 'Be the change you want to see' as they say.

Somerville1234 · 09/10/2018 17:39

I never called it a role; it's not that in any way. I'm not going to encourage doxxing by saying anything other than opportunity/reward, especially as I haven't namechanged.

OP posts:
kesstrel · 09/10/2018 17:36

So never a good idea to "imagine" things disparaging to the OP without reading the whole thread.

kesstrel · 09/10/2018 17:35

The OP said earlier that the role itself has nothing to do with trans or non-binary or LGBT issues.

bzzbeebzz · 09/10/2018 17:30

What exactly is the non-binary experience, DakiniTawa?

FekkoTheLawyer · 09/10/2018 17:29

I'd just tell them that I identify as gender agnostic.

DakiniTawa · 09/10/2018 17:27

Please don't do this Somer.
It's bad enough that the transwomen walk into women's protected roles without even thinking about the ramifications for women.
Please don't be the woman who squares the circle by doing the same thing in a LGBT protected role
2 wrongs don't make a right

Seconded. I imagine the role involves leading group sessions and workshops with non-binary folk so it isn't right or ethical to apply for the post if you are secretly scathing of the non-binary experience.

icannotthinkofauser · 09/10/2018 17:17

@MNHQ this is the second email I've received saying I've been mentioned by a poster on this thread, I have not commented on this thread nor has anyone mentioned me in any post here.

I’m thinking of applying for an opportunity on the basis of being non-binary
EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 09/10/2018 17:08

Please don't be the woman who squares the circle by doing the same thing in a LGBT protected role.

Somerville didn't say anything about LGBT though. Specifically trans & nonbinary.
