Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Given that nearly every university student seems to believe TWAW, will sanity ever prevail?

That's it really. They are tomorrow's politicians, teachers, lawyers. I am at a loss to see how we can turn this round.

Nobody believes TWAW. Otherwise everyone would ignore them.

PineappleSunrise · 07/10/2018 22:20

They don't. I work with an especially woke group of young people and although they are very, very supportive of LGBT people, when push comes to shove they don't actually believe that men change into women due to "ladybrain" or vice versa.

The main barrier they run into is that they are so new to the "real world" outside uni and used to seeing powerful old birds like me at work (or their mothers, let's face it) they think that feminism has won everything. I really shocked a couple of them last year when I told them of the last time I had to put up with a ridiculously inappropriate, OTT sexist comment at work (only four years ago). They really were thinking that all of that was sometime in the distant past.

BigGreenOlives, people are usually happy to ‘be nice’ till something affects them personally.

So city women were peak trans’d by Pips Bunce, others by Girl Guides. For me it was more about the shutting down of free speech and debate, and followed on from some similar virtue signaling/no debate on Fb from woke Momentum/Green friends. Self ID uses the same

My DC have been bemused by their mum coming out as a radfem. (I doubt I am actually - but there you go.) However DD messaged me a link about US swimming allowing trans girls to compete against girls yesterday. If the same happens in her sport it will not be safe. It would be a huge loss.

So one by one people are getting the message. We are many, they are few.

I was talking to an adult on Friday who kept saying but what’s the harm in saying that TWAW and, she seemed to think that anyone who really felt they were a W should be treated as one. She’ll never end up in a refuge or a prison, unlikely to need NHS care & feels it doesn’t affect her in anyway & we should just worry about these poor sad people’s feelings being hurt.

15 years ago when I was a student, I had completely rejected 'feminism' and believed that as a woman I had equality. Then I entered the real world and my perceptions changed. Going out to work and then having children made me see the world in a very different way. Even if students believe that now, it doesn't mean they'll still think that way in a few years time.

That Edinburgh article is priceless.

Politelygiveszerofucks · 07/10/2018 21:07

My kids don’t believe it either. Young kids don’t. Which is why the lobby feels the need to indoctrinate educate them from primary school age.

TimeLady · 07/10/2018 21:06

If I'm ever asked for my pronouns for a badge, I'm going to insist on eff/off

Velella · 07/10/2018 21:04

Thanks. I was beginning to get rather down about it. A couple of young people I have spoken to were completely on board. But small sample.

Edinburgh students seem sceptical, much to the disappointment of the author of this piece.

What does appear to be the case is that trans students seem very invested in entering political groups at university, thus those voices are heard.

TerfedOff · 07/10/2018 20:55

They don't.

The young people at work don't believe it.

My kids and their friends don't either.

Fear not.

I actually worry more about the public sector which has become a manifestation of 1984 group think.

The power of a mortgage, a lifestyle and social status to maintain.

Who is Gold, who is silver and who is bronze?

I assume, some MPs (Maria Miller and Angela Raynor types) and many public servants are bronze!

SPOFS · 07/10/2018 20:52

Most students develop critical thinking skills at university, meaning that most see straight through this rubbish.

The oh-Jeremy-Corbyn trend has been and gone too.

Needmoresleep · 07/10/2018 20:36

They don’t. They, like everyone, choose not to speak out for fear of being accused of being transphobic. There is real despair at Student Unions obsession with trans-rights, and prioritising this issue over the real issues today’s students face.

There are some real problems on campus. This is the first proper Facebook, internet generation, which is a huge difference. My feel is that there is more social isolation, more anxiety, and a lot more exposure to extreme porn. The experience for some girls is that some boys are seriously and openly misogynist. Some really bad rugby club behaviour, a surpring amount of problems like unreported drink spiking and so on.

Equally this is the generation that saw the flow and ebb of the Oh-Jeremy-Corbyn phenomenon, with no-platforming of Conservative or pro-Brexit voices. No debate is depressingly usual, which does not mean that the average student does not want the NUS or politicians to address their issues. There is sympathy for peers who appear to be confused about either their sexuality or gender. But though most would not say so, I think they would be quite worried about peers who embark on either hormones or surgery without a lot of thought.

What's more worrying is how many elected politicians seem to think TWAW.

They don't think it. They are just liars, opportunists or cowards.

OldCrone · 07/10/2018 20:34

What's more worrying is how many elected politicians seem to think TWAW. And they are the ones who are making the laws now.

JennyHolzersGhost · 07/10/2018 20:32

I remember the ‘sex positive’ feminists, before pornification became part of mainstream culture (sex videos, Kardashians, etc). Those women have radically revised their memory of what it was they believed in Grin 🤦‍♀️

UpstartCrow · 07/10/2018 20:31

Most of them don't, the ones that do will realise at some point and become born again radfems.
Of course, they'll have to start from the ground up, but that will be their problem, and they can deal with it like adults.

Hopefully it will be a lesson learned. 'Don't shit where you eat' or some such shizzle.

BlackeyedSusan · 07/10/2018 20:28

Feminists at uni have not got the vast range of experience of misogyny and sexism and harassment that comes with age. Things may change as they live life.

HamiltonCork · 07/10/2018 20:25

I think that young feminists might be a lost cause but give it 5/10 yrs they'll realise what utter horseshit they've been spouting.

NameChangedAgain18 · 07/10/2018 20:25

They don't. On the whole, the students don't believe it. Very few academics believe it. And the senior management don't believe it either.

DayMay · 07/10/2018 20:25

The non lib feminists don't attend advertised meetings.Wink

MaisyPops · 07/10/2018 20:25

I dont think they do all believe it.
