Andrew Gilligan
Be kinder on gender, begs Jan Morris
The writer and sex-change pioneer calls for tolerance amid a bullying campaign against opponents of the right to ‘self-identify’

(Extract)
Her comments come as friends of Penny Mordaunt, the minister for women and equalities, who is in charge of the consultation, said extremists on “both sides” were making the issue “more complicated”.

Mordaunt hopes to make a decision quickly after the consultation ends on October 19. The politician, a likely Tory leadership contender, faces a dilemma, with substantial opposition to the proposals in her party despite public support from the prime minister.

Sunday Times research shows that at least 15 public meetings held by feminist groups opposed to the proposals have been invaded, threatened, picketed, closed down or forced to move venue by transgender activists.

There have been at least six incidents of violence or intimidation against opponents of the reforms, with one trans activist convicted of assault. At least 11 opponents of the change have been targeted through their jobs.

Trans campaigners are bringing private criminal prosecutions against three opponents after the authorities refused to prosecute them.

Feminists say the reforms would allow any man who identified as a woman into protected female spaces such as changing rooms. Trans activists say anyone who identifies as a woman must be treated as such."

concludes:
"Only 18% of the public back the reforms, according to a YouGov poll. Yet few frontline politicians have spoken against them. “The silencing campaign has been successful,” said David Davies, the Tory MP for Monmouth, who has himself been subjected to three complaints by trans activists, all dismissed. “This is supposed to be a public consultation, but actually having a consultation and debate is the last thing the transgender lobby wants.”

The fact that she's hoping for a quick decision does indicate that she's not planning to change course. Our politicians are so out of touch with the electorate and continue to treat us with contempt.

Come to that, they're out of touch with material reality, both in their beliefs about biology and their belief that there has been abuse from both sides in this debate.

I'm wondering how they can pull back from this when the inevitable problems arise for women and girls. Or will they actually try and enforce things? Will we actually find the police on our doorstep if we state biological facts and will there be actual prosecutions rather than the intimidating interviews under caution? What will society be like after this has gone through, the entitlement of the TRAs is going to be alarming.

Shocking coming from a minister during a consultation!

AngryAttackKittens · 07/10/2018 07:25

Indeed. If pretending that males are female only inconveniences women then so what? If it inconveniences men then clearly that's not on.

Bold fail!

Except when it is their mother/ daughter/wife/sister /for relationship purposes.

Comments were weird yesterday on the Times, they took a while to show up. I think they might be pre-moderating them.

Potplant2 · 07/10/2018 07:09

Thank you

NopeNi · 07/10/2018 07:08

Thanks for the share token AAK Smile

AngryAttackKittens · 07/10/2018 07:07

If Mordaunt thought that this would be simply resolved if the stupid people would just stop shouting at each other then wow, she really doesn't respect the female half of the electorate at all.

It continues to irritate me that for a male to be labelled as an extremist he has to threaten to kill people and beat up pensioners, whereas for a woman to be seen as an extremist she just has to be visibly pissed off.

NopeNi · 07/10/2018 07:06

Can't see any comments, is that just my browser?

Potplant2 · 07/10/2018 06:58

Anyone got a share token?

ChrysanthemumsAreMums · 07/10/2018 06:52

Nope

They've treated us like idiots. They hoped to sneak it in under the radar, as they did the GRA. The Consultation is so deeply flawed and biased anyway

NopeNi · 07/10/2018 06:50

Do you think she really thought it was a simple question and there wouldn't be arguments for and against it? It is complicated. It's a minefield.

How the hell did she ever plan to analyse the data from that extensive, huge, difficult survey "quickly"?

Good for David and for everyone brave enough to actually stand up for debate and reason.

ChrysanthemumsAreMums · 07/10/2018 06:42

That's a really important article.

Thanks again to AG and to David Davies, MP for Monmouthshire

Well done on quoting that and then going on to demonstrate that in fact the extremism and bullying is coming mostly from one side. Where are the feminists shutting down trans events and sending death threats?

I mean, good job on finally noticing that not all trans activists are trembling little fauns in need of protection, Penny, but you still don't seem to be quite grasping the full picture.

Hahahaha

How funny.

You are funding TRA out of tax payers money.

You won't debate.

You have no respect for women.

You are pushing a lie that males are women.

Hahaha

Grin Grin Grin

Totalitarian Tory!

DayMay · 07/10/2018 04:11

Fuck the truth, Fuck public opinion. Fuck democracy eh powerless Penny!

See where that gets you - you are a public laughing stock and you are making an already Brexit angry public more angry with your lies!

Velella · 07/10/2018 04:06

So to clarify, does whatever Mordaunt decides after the consultation closes have to go through both houses to be approved?

howard97A · 07/10/2018 02:11

"Mordaunt hopes to make a decision quickly"

I think she's already made it

R0wantrees · 07/10/2018 01:01

The Conservatives could capitalise on this.

Me too, DoubleThink.

I shared the Spectator article on the trans guidance in schools today. I hope it reaches some of my teacher friends.

BesmirchingMotherhood · 07/10/2018 00:56

Isn’t it odd that the extremist position on the GC side is pretty much the law as it currently stands?

R0wantrees · 07/10/2018 00:50

Mordaunt hopes to make a decision quickly !!!

Just like that eh?

Makes for grim reading. Though at the moment I am seeing any article through a "would this be a good one to share on fb" light!
