Why is the feminism board fair game?

  • When asked what posters like about Mumsnet, they mention the fact that they don't like or hide the feminism board or say it should be removed, although that wasn't the question.
  • There are always threads asking how to hide a board, without fail many posters join to say yes I hate the feminism board too.
  • Posters make threads or post on existing threads telling us what we can/can't discuss on here.

There's lots I think that's pointless, boring or inane on MN but I just don't click on those threads or topics. I don't post on the threads and tell people how boring I think they are or that they should talk about something else.

Does it happen for any other board?

Oh dear. We’d all better let women identifying men into our spaces then, just to keep the ‘woke’ happy.

AssassinatedBeauty · 02/10/2018 23:36

Just to point out that people on the aibu thread about this are having a field day about how vile/transphobic FWR is. Which is nice.

PickleNeedsAFriendInReading · 02/10/2018 23:18

I think it's because people are quite interested in the topics. But it's not a board that many people would feel comfortable posting on, unlike other boards that they might just want to hide. I read a lot, but just lurk. I'm fairly intelligent, find it relatively easy to write, had the start of an academic career, but there's still almost no way I'd dare contribute to any of the threads here. So I can see why it's more controversial than other boards, because people don't really want to just hide it.

Viago · 02/10/2018 23:09

How did you find the thread then Crazy?

ToeToToe · 02/10/2018 23:06

SD - it's because that board has been trolled relentlessly for years by men's rights activists. The 'just asking questions' brigade.

It's actually not nearly so snippy as AIBU can be, or the Doghouse. But somehow it's worse when it's feminism.

CrazyToast · 02/10/2018 23:03

Cos people don't like feminists and feminism, even women, even other feminists.

The feminist boards never show up on my Active, wonder why?

SD1978 · 02/10/2018 23:01

Partly, it may also be when someone who doesn't really have much knowledge of what feminism is and where to look- there can be some seriously snippy replies of do your own research and don't rely on us to tell you where to look. Happened to me, and have seen it happen to others.

ToeToToe · 02/10/2018 22:55

Incidentally, I was heartened by how many MNetters came out to say they were here for the Feminism Boards on the recent thread by MNHQ - really uplifting.

ToeToToe · 02/10/2018 22:53

perhaps this feminism board would be more accurately called the gender-critical board?

No, it's all feminism. All woman centred, as it should be. Some men don't like that of course.

The FWR board was re-named feminism chat in 2014 because a few people started whinging that it was exclusive and too academic - and that was way before the trans issue became mainstream here.

There is a certain section of society that just don't seem to like women gathering together to talk about themselves, and their own experiences. Banish the penis from your discussion - you're a target.

FloralBunting · 02/10/2018 22:50

Galvantula · 02/10/2018 22:35

I've been here 9 years and I'm sure I remember the "hiding the Feminism board" comments from long before the TRA debate threads became common.

disrespectfulpenguin · 02/10/2018 22:27

Oh for the love of.
I have a husband. i am a stay at home mum. I like baking and sewing.
i have a drawer of make up and spend far to much money on my hair.
I am a feminist.
I like ballet which i know, i know, sigh, but it soo pretty. BUT I am still a feminist.
I dont care how you dress.

What makes me a feminist is, I think my daughter should be paid the same as my son for the same work. MY daughter cant trans out of the pay gap. I want female children around the world to have access to the same rights, the same education, for fucksake the same right to live as the male ones. Girls cant trans, opt out of this.

I am conditioned to be nice to get along. I was told all through my childhood dont be bossy, let your brother win, BLAH BLAH BLAh

PS i do shave my legs because i am condition my society to do so. I wonder why in so many peoples minds NOT shaving your legs is such a big no no no?

Why wouldn't a movement and group of people who wish to destroy women's ability to define themselves as a class of females who are oppressed by males as class not be worth the amount of attention it gets here?

Feminism as anything meaningful is lost when males can become females overnight. If it was just a few random individuals pushing for this then it would probably be largely ignored, but instead they are a very well funded group who are actively pushing for legislation that forces us into the same legal category as men. Not to mention to regressive ideology of gender that goes against everything women fought for before us.

It is annoying that we have to spend so much time simply fighting for our right to legally define ourselves, but it must be done.

GoldenWonderwall · 02/10/2018 22:05

I believe feminists become pregnant through sheer force of will. I feel very very sorry for their poor sons because they are being brought up by man haters who they will call them rapists before they even have their gender cruelly assigned at birth.

AyeRobot · 02/10/2018 22:01

I would suggest that threads started from a feminist perspective on other topics have an almost zero chance of being dismissed as goady. Why would they be? Centering women is what we do!

As I always say, FWR is not a magazine, it's user generated content. Produce the content you want to talk about - the format is here for you to do just that.

Persifleur · 02/10/2018 21:58

/snark - I'm assuming BernardBlacks was posting in the same spirit but these days you just can't tell. I'm not on broadband atm so hard to check

Before then it was nasty feminists saying you can’t be a sahm or you can’t shave your legs or you can’t have sex with your husband.

The name of the site is "Mumsnet". How do they think the feminist mums got pregnant? I mean, a few will have used other means, but I'm guessing the majority got pregnant the old fashioned way.

PipGoesPop · 02/10/2018 21:57

AIBU. Particularly the instamum threads.

The Doghouse or Pets Corner or whatever it is. Dogs are the bollocks and humans suck V dogs are cunts 4eva

AssassinatedBeauty · 02/10/2018 21:56

When you start threads about more important feminist topics you're dismissed as goady, @HappyGowerGirl?

HappyGowerGirl · 02/10/2018 21:55

@Molo that is total bullshit. Of course women getting raped in prisons is horrific, but ultimately women getting raped by transgender women in prison is a TINY proportion of all the injustices faced by women all over the world. Not saying it’s not important, but it is a TINY proportion. Yet about 75% of the threads in Feminism are about this.

Many mumsnetters who are also feminists no longer feel at home on the Feminism board because it no longer represents their views, and when they post on the board to discuss their views they are instantly dismissed as trolls/goady. The Feminism board does feminism a disservice by alienating women.

I chuckle every other month or so, 7Days, about the tumbleweed on the Human Rights board. I think perhaps that the equalists were more interested in maintaining the status quo, which I'm sure is a surprise to many of us.

There's a lot to lose for many if they think about feministy stuff to much. Or perhaps feminists are mostly wrong. Or something.

Molokonono · 02/10/2018 21:42

Some women just give no shits about other women and girls until it affects them I guess.

Who knew that rapists in female prisons would be such a 'first world problem'...

Oh hang on...
