I guess it's hardly surprising, but here's the GRA consultancy guidance that Mermaids have put out...

I have ChrysanthemumsAreMums but they're almost always autistic (which is more neurological than mental health related).

ChrysanthemumsAreMums · 02/10/2018 18:19

I have never read an account of a 'trans child' that doesn't betray the parents old-fashioned and damaging views about gender stereotypes. Or involve a child who has experienced trauma, abuse or mental health difficulties.

NopeNi · 02/10/2018 18:17

Of course they do.

Fucking hell.

VickyEadie · 02/10/2018 18:16

I know others have already said this - but parents who take their daughters abroad to be genitally mutilated get arrested and charged with a criminal offence...

VickyEadie · 02/10/2018 18:15

I began playing football - about which I was obsessed (the first in a series of obsessions, if I'm honest) - when I was 9. I was a bit crap, though you don't admit that to yourself as a child, and I dreamed of playing for my favourite club and for England. If someone had told me I could 'change sex', I have no doubt I'd have said "Oh, yeah!"

Fast forward to age 14 and the next obsession (a popular beat combo) kicked in with a vengeance. I fancied the pants off one of the blokes in the group - all thoughts of being a bloke long vanished.

Kids, eh? Getting mad, unfeasible ideas in their heads for thousands of years. Only now, some adults - including the ones with most responsibility for protecting them - are encouraging them to do some particularly drastic things to themselves as a result.

RomanyRoots · 02/10/2018 18:06

Gosh, all kids have some sort of confusion growing up.
I was convinced I was a lesbian because I played with boys rather than try to date them. I climbed trees, played outside a lot and had no interest in hair and make up.
I've been married for 27 years, have 3 dc and have a fulfilled sex life.
I could well have bi tendencies, I'm not sure, but I know I'm not gay.

FekkoTheLawyer · 02/10/2018 18:03

Exactly. Like we did a generation ago. Some grew up gay, some straight, some bi - and a teeny tiny transsexual. Why is it now decided that they are actually in the wrong body? Are gay people now all saying that they really wished they'd had surgery when they were a child? Quite the opposite a rally - I'm hearing horror that they would have been sterilised and had surgery before they could decide what they were happy with.

She is a straight woman - how dare she decide for another human being? How the hell could she know that a small child 'needed' this?

deepwatersolo · 02/10/2018 18:02

Not sure, Bienchen.

The youngest person with SRS is Kim Petras, I believe she was operated on in Germany. What is a document change compared to that?

R0wantrees, what annoys me the most about this TED-talk is that if you take her narrative at face value what happened was:
Son was gendernonconforming, she was ok with it but husband could not take it and tried to make the kid be like a boy, basically teaching the kid that if he likes girl stuff he is a girl.
And then the transjourney started. I sure wonder how the kid's journey would have looked, had both parents been ok with a 'pink boy'.

FekkoTheLawyer · 02/10/2018 17:56

Children frequently get bees in their bonnets about all sorts of crap. My sister was absolutely going to join the police, DS was going to do all sorts to be honest, I was going to either be a witch or live in a big house with logs if dogs. I really really wanted to be a witch though.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 02/10/2018 17:53

not RTFT

In repsonse to title > but of course they do.

Now will read.

Bienchen · 02/10/2018 17:52

I got as far as the bit Other countries have provided TNB CYP with
LGR and nothing bad has happened! States such as Norway, Malta,
Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Argentina

Germany has done no such thing. Intersex people have the option of a third gender that is all.

In some instances, parents or those with parental responsibility may have a view that is not consistent with the child’s view. If possible, the child’s preference should prevail even if the child is not Gillick competent. "

Dear God. If your little girl wants to use the boys toilets, or the gents, you must let her.

Does this apply to toddlers?!!!

FekkoTheLawyer · 02/10/2018 17:47

It does look like someone loudly trying to justify their actions and encourage others to do the same so that she is vindicated.

She really does need to just stop dragging her kid through the press and let them have a bloody life, not a 3 ring circus.

Datun · 02/10/2018 17:47

Does anyone feel that the women who took her son to Thailand is trying to change the law to make what she did look acceptable

This is the woman who took her (then) son to the doctor because of his preference for girls' toys. And she, or her husband, removed every toy in the house, because they were the 'wrong' toys. Whose son subsequently thought they were the wrong sex.

Gender stereotype appears so ingrained in her psyche she seems to think it's entirely natural.

R0wantrees · 02/10/2018 17:46

As an aside, NHS Transgender policies include specific sections for children.

eg From Yorkshire and Humber Protocol:
(extract)
"Gender variant children and young people should be accorded the same respect for their self-defined gender as are Tran’s adults, regardless of their genital sex.
Where there is no segregation, as is often the case with children, there may be no requirement to treat a young gender variant person any differently from other children and young people. Where segregation is deemed necessary, then it should be in accordance with the dress, preferred name and/or stated gender identity of the child or young person.
In some instances, parents or those with parental responsibility may have a view that is not consistent with the child’s view. If possible, the child’s preference should prevail even if the child is not Gillick competent. "

Bit like retrospective planning permission?
Imagine the horror of recognising that you had been mistaken in making your child a lifelong patient and eunuch.

Noqont · 02/10/2018 17:45

This is a massive safeguarding issue.
