I guess it's hardly surprising, but here's the GRA consultancy guidance that Mermaids have put out...

Current thread, OP twofalls post includes response:

"I’m writing to let you know that I’ve raised your concerns regarding Mermaids UK, one of the organisations we link to on our Gender and autism page, with a number of teams within the National Autistic Society. In light of the concerns raised in your message, and of other feedback that we have received, we have decided to remove all links to Mermaids UK from our website, while we take the time to consult with relevant professionals and to reconsider which organisations we wish to place links to on our website.

As such, our Web Team are working to remove all links to Mermaids UK from our website as soon as possible. Please do be aware, however, that, as we are currently in the process of updating our website to reflect our new branding and organisational identity, it may take a few days for this to be actioned."

Spectator article 'Don’t tell the parents: the official guidance to teachers of ‘trans children’
As in so many progressive schooling fads before it, children are the experts and teachers are just there to facilitate'
by Madeleine Kearns

concludes:
"What’s worrying is that anyone who challenges the new teaching on trans issues can find themselves in trouble. So when Victoria Atkins, the Minister for Women, admitted to being ‘a little cautious’ about teenage sex-changes, she was accused of bigotry. And Dr Kenneth Zucker, perhaps the leading authority on gender dysphoria in children, was recently ousted from his clinic in Toronto after being accused of ‘transphobia’ and supporting ‘conversion therapy’ because his 40 years’ experience and research had led him to the conclusion that affirming a child’s perceived gender can be counterproductive.

Many of these transgenderism training programmes are publicly funded. Last year, LGBT Youth Scotland received more than £1 million in grants, including £350,000 from the Scottish government, £160,000 from local authorities (all but one SNP-controlled), and £75,000 from Education Scotland. Mermaids UK, meanwhile, was granted £35,000 from the Department for Education and £128,000 from Children in Need.

Something is off here. Teachers are being asked to put ideology before evidence and to exclude parents from serious welfare decisions about their own children. Parents are often not allowed to take part in the discussion. Children are being asked to make important decisions about their gender, which is a surprisingly adult notion for many to grasp. What’s clear is that the issue of gender dysphoria in children is one of tremendous complexity, both medical and moral. To suggest otherwise — to children or teachers — is a dangerous mistake."

People who say "little girls are kinky" > like that mate of the bloke who wanted into the girsl changing at top shop. The top shop man had images of himself dressed as a highly sexualised ?12yo or sometihng it was. Girl obv.

Should be regarded with MASSIVE SUSPICION not feted FFS and allowed to do whatever they want. Held above criticism.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 04/10/2018 09:03

deepwater and validation and also using "poor trans kids" is a great prop for the less sympathetic arguments of walloping great big blokes with loads of kids who are clearly fetishists.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 04/10/2018 09:01

Sorry should say there

Was trying to be all girl / boy / trans friendly

JJ is male
For a 17 yo boy not to have urge to masturbate not to have had orgasm is abnormal
For a girl >> different. Not all girls that age have mastubated or had an orgasm. There is desire though > hence boybands Grin different sexuality.

I trippe over myself triyng to be "gender neutral" which was stupid wasn't it.

Ignore that line. I was talking about boys.

deepwatersolo · 04/10/2018 09:01

That has to be of massive intererest to a not inconsierable number of poeple (men).

I mean, just looking at social media and beyond: the fervent interest some grown TRAs have in transing children they don't even know, is surely something to behold. Not sure it can all be explained by empathy, particularly considering how their own journies were so different (fathering children, successful careers as men before transition...).
(Transpeople, who would have had a similar journey are often way more critical of underage transisiton (e.g. Blaire White)).

"What happens to the brain without puberty. We know there is a pruning of neuronal pathways in puberty which matures the brain and makes it more efficient
What happens if a child doesn't go through puberty. Does their brain stay pre pubescent along with their genitals?"

On a thread before the answer is yes.

Puberty isn't just about physical changes - our brains change, we "grow up". The attitude and behaviour, risk taking, separation from parents, is a PITA Grin but is normal, it's part of puberty.

No puberty > the brain and the body are suspended in child like state.

I found this incredibly disturbing and upsetting > it was a thread about Jazz Jennings. 17 yo transgirl > never had a orgasm. No urge to masturbate. This is obviously personal to them but I was horrified > this is NOT NORMAL for a 17yo child of either sex. It just hadn't occuered to me that this would happen with puberty blockers. Just a "pause" right?

You can end up with 18yo (legal for porn and prostitution) with the minds and bodies of pre pubescant children. Hairless. Undeveloped genitals. Easily manipulated (not had brain develop). LEGAL.

That has to be of massive intererest to a not inconsierable number of poeple (men).

And for the child > the surgery. No sex drive > no sexual pleasure? This is a massive loss.

This needs discussing more openly. It's horrifying.

Rowantrees - thanks for the link to that Susie green video. I got 3 minutes into It where she says something like

“ what I had decided by the time she was about two was that I had a very sensitive quite effeminate boy who was probably gay “ .

Based on the facts that her two year old wore a tutu at the child minders and played with polly pocket.

And she says that her husband thought that by “ allowing “ a two year old to dress up in Snow White costumes she was “ facilitating and encouraging “ .

They removed all his favourite toys to punish him for being “effeminate”.

Then she told her 6 year old son that when she was a grown up he could have an operation to make him a girl.

It’s terrifying how stupid these people are . And how they are allowed to impose their delusions on their children and duck up their lives.

In any other context this would be seen as child abuse.

deepwatersolo · 04/10/2018 08:34

What happens if the trans person changes their mind afterwards and wants to go back, (which has happened sometimes)?

It is all part of the gender journey... Glitterball (where are the rainbow and unicorn icons on here!?!!?)
Just ask Dr. Ehrensaft & Co.

Lead Spectator article, 'Trans rights have gone wrong
The new gender orthodoxy allows no room for dissent'
James Kirkup
(extract)
"Your 13-year-old daughter tells a teacher that’s she’s uncomfortable with her body. She prefers trousers to skirts, football to ballet. She says she thinks she’s a he and wants to be treated as a boy at school. Would the teacher tell you your daughter wants to change gender?

Your 11-year-old granddaughter comes home from school upset. Changing after gym, another girl stood watching her undress and playing with her penis. (The girl in question is transgender, so yes, she has a penis.) When your family complains to the school, what happens?

In the first case, no, the teacher wouldn’t tell you. ‘All people, including children and young people, have a right to privacy… Staff should not disclose information that may reveal a pupil’s trans status to others, including parents.’ In the second, it’s not the girl with a penis who has a problem, it’s the girl without one. She and her parents have wrongly assumed the child with the penis is ‘not a real girl’. That error should be ‘challenged through training and awareness raising’ so your granddaughter is comfortable with her classmate.

These cases are real. So are the responses, which come from the Allsorts Trans Inclusion Schools Toolkit, guidelines for school staff developed with Brighton and Hove City Council and used, in different forms, by several dozen councils in England and Wales. It is unsurprising that schools want guidance on how to deal with children describing themselves as transgender, since more and more seem to be doing so." (continues)

"Such cases help explain why a significant number of women (and men) are deeply uncomfortable with the agenda promoted by Stonewall, TELI, Allsorts Youth Project and the rest of a loose network of ‘trans-rights’ advocates who enjoy immense influence in public life today, and significant public funding.

Others groups include Mermaids and the Gender Identity Research & Education Society, both frequently consulted by councils, NHS trusts, police forces and Whitehall departments for guidance on applying the law around transgender children. Both are tiny charities run not by lawyers but by parents whose children changed gender; it’s hard to think of another field of policy where personal experience is prioritised over objective expertise.

According to Michael Biggs, an Oxford University sociologist, the speed at which transgender rights advocates have advanced their cause is unprecedented in western history. In less than a decade, he suggests, the movement has embedded itself in public and corporate life and often succeeded in changing policy and practice without significant scrutiny or question." Guardian today, 'Charities need to stop slide in public trust warns regulator
Groups risking censure, says Charity Commission, citing aggressive fundraising and betrayal of charitable focus'

(extract)
"Registered charities may not survive unless they behave with greater selflessness and stop the slide in public trust, Tina Stowell, chair of the Charity Commission is warning.

Lady Stowell, a former Conservative minister, is to set out a tougher stance over the regulation of the £74bn-a-year sector after a string of scandals, including the collapse of Kids Company in 2015, and the sexual exploitation in Haiti by a senior Oxfam worker, which emerged in 2018.

The UK’s 168,000 registered charities face censure unless they show they are “a living example of charitable purpose”, she will say on Thursday.

In a speech that also attempts to draw a line under criticism of the regulator’s own effectiveness, Stowell will warn that the “concept of charity” is under threat." (continues)

Amnesty on GRA
'If you are the parent of a trans child or a young trans or non-binary person check out Mermaids’ guidance to respond to the consultation.'
(extract)
" 2. Children and young people should have access to legal gender recognition

Trans and non-binary children and young people are currently completely excluded from applying for legal gender recognition and the government has vowed to maintain this exclusion. While trans and non-binary children and young people can change their gender on other documents, such as passports, they must wait until they turn 18 to be able to obtain a gender recognition certificate. This puts them at risk of their privacy being violated and of discrimination. Young trans and non-binary people suffer greatly from discrimination and bullying: 8 in 10 trans people bullied at school or college are self-harming.

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) requires states to respect the right of children to be heard and to duly take into account their views. Legal gender recognition should be accessible to minors, taking into account the child’s freely expressed views regarding their own best interests, and in light of their evolving capacities. A blanket age restriction would not be appropriate to achieve this - absolute denial of legal gender recognition to individuals under a given age is not consistent with existing standards regarding the rights of children.

AIUK recommends that the self-determination process is open to those aged 16 and above. For those aged 16 and below there should be an administrative process based on parental support. A back-up mechanism should be available by which a child without parental support should be able to apply for gender recognition – ideally an administrative rather than court-based process." Some one pointed out on twitter that in sailors' tattoos, mermaids were what men used to signpost they like giving blow jobs but aren't into sodomy.

Serfisafleur · 02/10/2018 22:35

I always thought "Mermaids" was basically about transformation of a particularly "feminine" kind.
Fish tail or openable legs. You choose.

Trinity1976 · 02/10/2018 22:26

I've been trying to figure out for a while what the hell is motivation behind the actions of this 'charity'. This Susie Green character seems to be trying to convince as many parents as possible to trans their kids in order to normalise it, because of some deep-seated guilt about what she did to her son? Is that it?

What was Mermaids like as an organisation before she became CEO? I gather they've been around since 1995, so was the pre-Susie era better?

TimIsHavingABadDay · 02/10/2018 22:16

Funny how the timeline differs between the mothers and the kids section on the ted talks.

Either way, That kid has been failed

R0wantrees · 02/10/2018 19:21

I came across this a few weeks ago:

(2014?) Mermaids and Action for Children joint portfolio of work, including project for schools, 'Where do the Mermaids Stand?':
www.mermaidsuk.org.uk/assets/media/Mermaid%20Brochure.pdf

www.actionforchildren.org.uk/what-we-do/children-young-people/identity-lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender/

With apolgies for the de-rail but I find the 'Where do the Mermaids Stand' essay by Robert Fulghum cited in the guide as curious. Its from a very popular 1980's book (apparently) 'Lessons I Learned in Kindergarton'

The premis is that a game is set up and children are asked to choose one of three options; wizard, dwarf or giant. One child rejects these & wants to be a mermaid / says they are a mermaid. They are exempt from the game, standing with him instead and the child's comments leads to his 'profound' musings.

However, a different reading of the situation is that this one child either doesn't understand the game or refuses to play by the rules. An adult may, instead of elevating the child to special status and celebrating their assertion, have explained the game again or modified the next round to instead have mermaids, dragons and minotaurs for example.
The other question is, what if more or all children had also chosen to be different mythical / fairy tale creatures than the three he chose? What would the kindergarton teacher then done as the game (which was set-up to engage & manage a large number of children) would have failed in its purpose?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_I_Really_Need_to_Know_I_Learned_in_Kindergarten

& wondered if this essay was the basis for naming the UK charity Mermaids?

Just watched that Ted talk in which Jackie says "it's part of my DNA" with no sense of irony at all.

Oh Fekko Sad

"Odd choice of name - a mythical creature who neither belonged here nor there and died because of it."

Granted I'm hormonal today but that's stopped me in my tracks.

FekkoTheLawyer · 02/10/2018 18:58

Are there any other little mermaids in the family? Odd choice of name - a mythical creature who neither belonged here nor there and died because of it.

ChrysanthemumsAreMums · 02/10/2018 18:25

NopeNi

Ah yes. I forgot about the link with autism too

LikeDustWeRise · 02/10/2018 18:25

Normally people don't recognise the fact that their parents are misguided arseholes until they are around 30 years old.

I wonder whether any 'transkids' are nearing that age?
