Noticed a thread on MNHQ sitestuff type thing on active asking why you use MN and was heartened to see that FWR seems to be one of the main reasons ppl keep coming back.

That has to be a good thing, right?

Especially now, when it's seems as though things are going backwards and the rights the suffragette movement won for us are teetering on the brink.

I hope everyone adds their bit, or even just has a read, as the contents are mostly encouraging; in that our message is getting through. Will try to link it if I can:

I'm getting more and more addicted to FWR everyday

ScienceIsTruth · 30/09/2018 21:04

HandsOffMyRights similar story for me as well.
WokerThanWoke, yes, I noticed that as well, and I think FWR is the only area that's happened to which is, as another poster said, pretty weird in itself.
Datun, I agree. I'm also hoping that MNHQ take note of the number of posters on there mentioning FWR, and I'm kinda also hoping that it was (as another poster mentioned) behind the reason for that thread.

Arh I see thanks!

Datun · 30/09/2018 13:33

strumpetblowingatrumpet

It stands for feminism and women's rights. They changed the name to feminist chat ages ago, but people still fondly call it FWR.

ScienceIsTruth · 30/09/2018 13:13

I'm like a lot of ppl on that thread, in that I've never thought of feminism as having anything to do with my life.
I'm in my 40s, and a sahm in a fairly traditional relationship, and it wouldn't ever have occurred to me that FWR could be relevant in my life.

My eldest dd has Aspergers and it was her struggles that took me onto the FWR boards, but it's the intelligence and breadth of knowledge of the posters that keep me coming back. You've all helped the scales fall from my eyes, and once you've seen the world as it really is, there's no going back to sleep.

I now talk to my girls about women's rights and how the struggle is far from over, and I read what I can and do what I can to help. I'm attending talks, I'm reading (thanks, Rowan!), and I'm following. I don't always post much as I feel like a fraud, but I'm always reading, listening and learning.
I've shown my girls those amazing 3D images of their reproductive system, and I'm encouraging them to read up on the suffragette movement, etc, so they understand more about women's rights and why we still have to fight.

Yeah saw that thread and it made me smile a lot. Don't write much on these boards and always called myself a feminist so definitely not radicalised me in any way but love MN with a passion for FWR and S&B.

WokerThanWoke · 30/09/2018 11:52

Indeed Shots Grin

strumpetblowingatrumpet · 30/09/2018 11:34

Sorry, what does FWR stand for please? Smile

TrumpsToddlerTantrums · 30/09/2018 11:18

My oh so woke SIL who may just have been in a heterosexual relationship for over 30 years however much she says they're queer once told me I couldn't possibly be a feminist because a) I got married b) I changed my name c) I have children d) I became a SAHM to look after those children.

FWR gave me my feminism back. Feel free to judge, I'm channelling Posie today, I'm angry and I don't give a flying fuck anymore

ShotsFired · 30/09/2018 11:05

I didn't see similar about S&B or Christmas. Which I thought was interesting in itself.

Well you know the old saying, Fox...
If a virtue signaller signals and no one is around to hear it, does it count as virtue signalling?

Datun · 30/09/2018 11:01

Yes, to the notion we are driving their business rather than a distraction from it.

Yes to the scales falling about misogyny, via the trans issue. The massive over reach of transactivists and it being so topical and in the public eye, has shoved misogyny straight into many women's faces.

And yes, I too was wondering whether or not it was a deliberate attempt to counter all the ways in which the site is being asked to shut women up.

SophoclesTheFox · 30/09/2018 10:44

It's, well, interesting that there a few who as well as saying they like Chat or AIBU, also feel the need to say they avoid or block the Feminism board, when this wasn't asked about

I saw that too, woker. I didn't see similar about S&B or Christmas. Which I thought was interesting in itself.

Theswaggyotter · 30/09/2018 10:44

It’s really surprised me too -in a good way. There must be 90% or more saying fwr is the main reason they are on MN. I hope the various companies who advertise on MN are reading that thread!

ToeToToe · 30/09/2018 10:39

I was so pleasantly surprised by that thread!

There is a real assumption that FWR is a tiny niche board tucked away, that only a few regulars use - but it's not true at all.

Wonderful women coming together to talk, or just to read and lurk. Fabulous Brew

ShotsFired · 30/09/2018 10:34

The minute I saw that thread I thought there was a subtext of "tell us you lot! Give us the back up we need to tell the naysayers and AWAs to piss off"

irishfeminist · 30/09/2018 10:20

I don't really post about my kids as they're a bit older, so I was hanging round Style and Beauty, Books and so on, and a bit of AIBU and Chat, for entertainment and info.

Can't remember how I stumbled into FWR. My feminism was a bit dormant after years of being too busy with life, but the Feminism board blew my mind and revived it with a vengeance. The standard of writing and thinking and research on there is extraordinary, as is the old school sisterhood. I read it every day and have directed countless women towards it. Massive props (and an awkward North European type hug) to the sisters. You are fabulous.

WokerThanWoke · 30/09/2018 10:07

It's an amazing thread.

It's, well, interesting that there a few who as well as saying they like Chat or AIBU, also feel the need to say they avoid or block the Feminism board, when this wasn't asked about.

HandsOffMyRights · 30/09/2018 09:53

I've posted on there because this forum gets stick for attracting (shock horror) radical feminists. In reality it attracts so many women from a range of backgrounds.

I joined MN 13 years ago. I consider myself an 'average' mother.

Posters who caused grief on the 'why did you join MN thread' won't be able to conceive the idea that there are many MN posters out there who make their own minds up about feminism without being radicalised by the magical portal.

That women like me, who knew nothing of this, have been welcomed on here, informed, supported and able to express legitimate concerns about issues that affect my life.

The forum is embracing of women. All women. Just as the suffragist movement had members from all walks of life.

I've been a MN user for ages and it because of this forum that I now see the world for what it is. That I am able to voice my concerns without fear of being harrassed. And if I get it wrong, if my posts lack eloquance, they are accepted.

There's patience here. I've said it before, but Datun's superb posts convinced me this was where I needed to be, while R0wan's bloody excellent referencing and informative posts back up the themed we are discussing. Thanks too to the many others who sent DMs and whose posts had me nodding in agreement.

Thank you

SophoclesTheFox · 30/09/2018 09:19

Oh, it does, science!

It also blows out of the water the theory that I have seen bandied about that the reason for FWR generating the clicks that it does is that it is from people coming here to be aghast at the transphobia, who think we are all hateful, vile people living in an echo chamber, but they are too mortally afraid to anonymously type a few words on a screen to say so.

That looks pretty unlikely as an explanation now, hey?

ScienceIsTruth · 30/09/2018 09:15

I was hoping it would cheer you up Grin.

I was pleasantly surprised too, but it's really made me realise that our voices are getting through. Also, that there's quite a lot of people that lurk on these boards, which although we knew, it's nice to have it confirmed.

OP posts:
TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap · 30/09/2018 08:23

Indeed. I came for The Archers! I think I probably found my way over here partly as a result of reading the Relationships boards. I've been so heartened to see women over and over again telling other women not to put up with all sorts of abusive and disrespectful behaviour from their partners. So many women seem to have a very low bar, don't see that they are worth more than that. MN has done great work there. That's coming up quite a bit on that thread too.

SophoclesTheFox · 30/09/2018 08:17

I'm still working my way through the thread - it's a thumping majority for the FWR boards!

MNHQ must be finding that very interesting reading. I often feel quite sorry for the mods trying to find a middle ground to let women speak under what must be quite relentless pressure from anti woman activists (and don't get me wrong: I think they don't get this right quite a lot). But this has to highlight to them surely that we are not an annoying distraction that threatens their business: we're driving their business. The clicks are what advertisers pay for. The exposure to their target market.

It's enormously heartening Grin

SophoclesTheFox · 30/09/2018 08:09

Oh my word Shock That thread though! That's amazing.

I mean, we sort of knew this because of the user stats about the amount of traffic being driven through FWR, but to see the words of the women behind that traffic is just wonderful Grin

It must be very dusty in here because something is making my eyes water.
