IMPORTANT NOTICE - It is with regret that we have to announce that our meeting in Leeds cannot go ahead due to late and unreasonable cancellation. We will be emailing attendees shortly with more information. We condemn this act of silencing women. More to follow.

Take heart. Even Sophie Walker of WEP thinks the cancellation of WPUK in Leeds was a bit much. Hmm

Women should have the right to meet and discuss changes to the law that will affect them. It is not transphobic to ask questions and we will not resolve valid questions about single sex spaces by shutting down debate.

To lift spirits

Leeds WPUK cancelled

So glad you have found another venue. I was about to get on my horse and travel up there and in 3 days time lift up my dress and petticoats, take stones out of my drawers and start smashing windows.

I would be happy to contribute to any legal proceedings. The government is holding a consultation about these issues, and local government is banning women from discussing them. This is a sham democracy.

Are you a fan of Jane Austin or Ellis Peters? Courtesy of both, I tend to refer to journeys in terms of horse or donkey ride length. :)

This is beyond belief - these TRAs need a cold shower, and fast!

I think since this is a public authority - and there are tweets of people saying they didn't just complain, but slandered WPUK to the relevant authorities - in cancelling a contractual licence for 'political' reasons (since 'transphobia' as claimed by TRAs is NOT a thing, so not a legitimate reason) they are definitely subject to judicial review etc.

I've read a couple of cases where for political reasons councils have breached contracts for groups to have their meetings or have enacted boycotts etc and the courts held that these violations of private law (contract) were illegitimate (Verrall v Gt Yarmouth, Wheeler v Leicester CC (which was a House of Lords case): from 1978 and 1985, so maybe the law has changed since then, although the HRA has come in and freedom of thought, of speech and of association are enshrined in it, so they should count for more...).
I wonder if that's why there appears to be an 'evolving' narrative, with someone saying that WPUK had been refused under their first name and then booked 'dishonestly' under another... That would give them a contractual reason to cancel (bit like lying to insurance), and I think they are trying to cover their backside.

So yes, I would dearly like to see a barrage of FOI requests and then a claim in contract, or book somewhere else where a similar situation might arise but prepared to serve an immediate interim injunction (which then means going to court).
These 'pretend' rights, the 'harm' that the complainers suggest - we know they do not exist YET (the rights), 'gender' is not a protected characteristic and the 'harm to feelings' is not and has not ever been considered sufficient in English law to prevent lawful activity or to breach enforceable contracts.

It would cost though, and you really need a good legal team.

On the negative side, those TELI-types wanted test cases.

FYI - I’ve FOIA’d Leeds City Council.

FermatsTheorem · 28/09/2018 20:41

I'm sure I've seen Aish Iqbal's journalism before and been very impressed by her.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 28/09/2018 20:31

Superseded by events since they have a venue, but otherwise a good article, thank you sensible people at Yorkshire Evening Post.

HarropShitman · 28/09/2018 20:22

Stillmuddlingthrough · 28/09/2018 20:15

how can Leeds residents help with this - any knowledgeable ladies have any ideas - could there be pressure or discussions with councillors?

MnerXX · 28/09/2018 20:08

Glad you found another venue. What an absolute shower of shite to pull out like that. Hope it backfires.

AngryAttackKittens · 28/09/2018 20:02

So the home of West Yorkshire Police and their oddly politicized Twitter account, Mermaids, MESMAC, and the "managed zone" in which women can be kidnapped and raped and it's OK because the rapist thought they were a prostitute has decided that it doesn't like uppity women talking out of line? I am so shocked.

The concentration of anti-woman behavior in that area needs looking into. By outsiders, since clearly the force that oversaw Rotherham and interviewed Sutcliffe 9 times before actually charging him couldn't find its own arse with both hands and a map.

ToeToToe · 28/09/2018 19:58

Wooohoo Grin

Up the women!

Manderleyagain · 28/09/2018 19:54

Sorry that was ssshhh not saggy!

Manderleyagain · 28/09/2018 19:54

2rebecca. Saggy Don't tell them!

ApocalypseNowt · 28/09/2018 19:53

I'm in Leeds and have just seen a group walk past with 'GRA does not threaten women's rights' placards Sad

I was hoping to run into your group tbh. Stay strong ladies, we're not all bad in Leeds!

Ereshkigal · 28/09/2018 19:51

They'd do better ignoring us and having large meetings and posters of their own

They know most people agree broadly with us and that we're more convincing. They won't admit it but they do.

Ereshkigal · 28/09/2018 19:50

I warned my other half last night that at some point one of us will have to walk under a fucking racehorse.

It really is looking like it.

Ereshkigal · 28/09/2018 19:48

Oh that's brilliant that you've found a new venue. Courage calls to courage Thanks

gendercritter · 28/09/2018 19:46

I was so angry reading this but now I just think 'you utter wazzocks.' Anyone doing any research into the meeting will see that it was going to be quite reasonable and straightforward. Lots of people watching on will only look at the council's actions and think what the hell? There was no reason to prevent them meeting at all. It will only add to our growing numbers. V glad to hear another venue was found.

FermatsTheorem · 28/09/2018 19:46

Great work with the alternative venue.

I should say I lived in Leeds for Finley's years and love the place and it's people - but the city council and the institutions with the power are a shower of shite.

Power to the brave women attending tonight.

speakingwoman · 28/09/2018 19:45

Well done, I’m really sorry about this

2rebecca · 28/09/2018 19:44

Getting our meetings shut down and posters taken down shows their intolerance. They'd do better ignoring us and having large meetings and posters of their own and concentrating on progressing their views rather than trying to stop ours being heard
