I guess it's official that they are now coming after the word female rather than just woman.

THis has been happening for some time.

Prominant and influential TRAs such as Sarah Brown (Stonewall & Lib Dem) Sue Pascoe (Channel 4 & Conservatives) have been stressing that they are female.

I'm sure there will be TRAs in other political parties, postitions of influence who have similarly asserted this.

IdahoJones · 25/09/2018 12:22

So finally the Charity Commission articles and Royal Charter WILL be dragged into this mess, if the GG has been told by ECHR it is now mixed-sex. That's a huge change to its original and established aims.

Oh what a tangled web we weave ...

Rainbows I agree with Piers and JHB.
I will no longer click a link to the Guardian, but I will for The Mail
Strange times indeed

JessicaJonesJacket · 25/09/2018 12:16

I don't think people do buy into it and I think GG thought they could have this policy change and actually never need to face any of the obvious problems it presents because the percentage of transpeople is tiny and because GG units are small local groups where members would know if other members/leaders were trans and members would switch units accordingly. But that doesn't work when you start attending camps with other units and when parents start to question what information is being withheld from them.
GG needed to be bold and needed to fight for the girls it represents. Instead it capitulated in the worst way.

RainbowsArePretty · 25/09/2018 12:06

I agree with Piers - unusual!

OvaHere · 25/09/2018 12:04

One thing that stood out on the twitter thread following the GGUK statement was how many TRA's were saying transgirls are female.

I guess it's official that they are now coming after the word female rather than just woman.

I'm incredulous that so many people can just buy into the idea that a teenage boy regardless of pronouns, hairstyles or clothing is female.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 25/09/2018 12:02

Chocolala that's part of the point.

If they have to actually face up to the sea change in their organisation's mission that they have actually introduced, then they may decide to change their course (or have parents, volunteers & guides make them do it). At the moment they are pretending to be what they are not.

I don't think my daughter cares that much at the moment about Brownies being single sex, she just prefers the activities, but she might grow to value that aspect of it if and when she progresses further. I certainly won't be offering services as a volunteer though.

JessicaJonesJacket · 25/09/2018 11:59

Can anyone clarify which body has asked GG to change their description to mixed sex?
I feel so sad that GG has let it come to this. All they had to do was embody their founding principles and listen to their members who consistently voted to be single sex. They've thrown away their entire legacy for woke points and funding.

R0wantrees · 25/09/2018 11:55

But I specifically signed my DDs up to GG BECAUSE it was single sex. I wanted them to have space to explore all they could do away from boys, because studies are apparently clear that girls are shouted down by and dominated by boys (eg in class and in social groups).

Girl Guides need to hear from girls and their parents.

This will ultimately be the most significant influence on their decsions.

I think she means EHRC, same letters, different order. Equality and Human Rights Commission. The organisation tasked with upholding the Equality Act 2010. - Likewise, I think this was what she meant.

Chocolala · 25/09/2018 11:49

Ahhhh. Thanks

R0wantrees · 25/09/2018 11:49

If they are forced to announce they are now mixed sex (which is exactly what their new stealth policies mean) then they lose their USP.

They are being forced to announce what is already the case.

The Girl Guides could decide to re-assert it being a single-sex organisation.

The Girl Guides would then have to ensure all of its policies were compatible.

It was given very poor advice in suggesting it could be a 'single gender' organisation for children.

It has an opportunity now and a very significant decision to make.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 25/09/2018 11:48

They state on their website that if girls decide to transition to boys then it's down to a discussion with the Unit and the child's parents as to how long they stay, with references to 'change & uncertainty'.

So they are basically a mixed sex, mixed gender organisation.
Despite what their website & policies say.
If that's what they have decided to be, they need to own it and not keep up the pretence that they are there for girls.

WhatTheWatersShowedMe · 25/09/2018 11:47

@Ereshkigal

Helen denying that Jane Fae advised GGUK. It's a shame GGUK haven't managed to do so as far as I know.

Mimmymum is straight up lying.

Chocolala · 25/09/2018 11:46

But the convention is a document. What’s the body that has asked GG to change their description?

R0wantrees · 25/09/2018 11:45

Caroline Farrow tweet this morning.

Echr?

OvaHere · 25/09/2018 11:41

If they are forced to announce they are now mixed sex (which is exactly what their new stealth policies mean) then they lose their USP.

I expect they will see a distinct drop in numbers as families for whom single sex was an important factor will have nowhere to go and those that aren't bothered but want a sensible org that doesn't lie to and gaslight children and parents will choose Scouts.

WarmWishes · 25/09/2018 11:36

This is already on the other thread, I see. Am always behind the curve!

Things have moved on since I first posted and still not had a chance to watch this morning's broadcast. It's probably old news in this issue anyway by now.

Anyway just seen this on twitter. Apologies if it has been posted already...but is this goodbye to GirlGuiding? I hope not but this mess needs sorting. They can't have it both ways.

Susi Green is either being totally disingenuous when she doesn’t seem to grasp that trans girls are not the same as girls, or she’s stupid.

Is it possible that SG and people like her genuinely don’t mix with people outside their bubble so don’t understand why others are not falling in with their way of thinking?

They’re so accustomed to being able to knee-jerk with, “You’re a transphobic bigot” that it must be difficult to cope with being interviewed by a notionally neutral person and not be able to use that response.

Either way she should not be head of a charity.
