Accepting the term 'cis'?

MyBeloved · 12/09/2018 18:52

During a debate with a teenage male family member, I was told I had to accept I was a ciswoman, not a woman...whether I liked it or not! I was also told as a ciswoman I had priviages trans mtf could only dream of.

I feel angry. Should I accept this? Or shall I continue standing up for my adult human female rights?!

... all these bloody labels and terms are just pointless

You do understand that our rights and power relations, our whole bloody society, is regulated by bloody labels and terms, also known as definitions, yes?

There is a reason society won't let a person who is labelled male and 45 years old reidentify as a little girl so s/he can go back to nursery school. Bloody labels and terms my arse.

CisMyArse · 16/09/2018 14:43

feedmecoffee keep thinking about this. You are reading headlines and not reading in depth. This issue is massive and impacts so much.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 15/09/2018 20:42

I'm just seeing where the tipping point is for some.

MitchDash · 15/09/2018 20:26

I struggle with the right terminology with trans issues. I don't care generally what people identify as and have no issue with using whatever personal pronouns anyone prefers. However, I do not understand how people decide because they dont like cars and football but like glitter and heels they must be girls. Now that's a statement made by a trans woman on a reality show this year so not my appraisal of the situation. Can't boys like glitter and heels? Aren't many of them still boys? Why has society allowed the boxes to reduce to such binary elements? I don't underand it at all.

FermatsTheorem · 15/09/2018 20:09

Yes, I too am waiting anxiously for a coherent, rational, non-circular, logically consistent and scientifically accurate explication of what is meant by the phrase "if a woman transitions then she becomes a man and vice versa."

I suspect I could be waiting a long time.

JellySlice · 15/09/2018 20:06

There are two genders... man and woman if a woman transitions then she becomes a man and vice versa

Rubbish.

JellySlice · 15/09/2018 20:05

Trans woman as in post op on hormones or intact male in a dress who feels like a woman

Why differentiate? Both are XY males.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 15/09/2018 19:46

Trans woman as in post op on hormones or intact male in a dress who feels like a woman (whatever that is?). Pip Bunce who says that they are a woman part of the week (Christ I'd hate to work in that office) -who won a womans business award (and he only works part the week as a woman anyway?).

XX / XY can't be changed with some lippy and 'feels'.

feedmecoffee · 15/09/2018 19:42

Don't think it's offensive but think it's daft and unnecessary 😂 what's wrong with woman, and if you are a trans woman then why can't you just refer to yourself as a woman? There are two genders... man and woman if a woman transitions then she becomes a man and vice versa... all these bloody labels and terms are just pointless 🙈

LorettasBox · 15/09/2018 19:19

These last two posts are excellent analysis.

It's not even that the terms are male centric, Nothing - they are porn-director-centric. The assumption is that any human will shag any other human if you put them together, and that any deviation from this is abnormal (I was about to suggest that women my age were exempt, whether because we're not seen as sexual beings, or simply not seen as human beings I'm not sure - but then I remembered the existence of "granny porn".)

It's a very peculiar mindset - the belief that to be fully sexual is the same as being utterly lacking in any discrimination whatsoever. I can't help but think there are two attitudes going on here - that men should be able to shag any attractive woman around in order to prove their manhood (with non-attractive woman simply invisible in this world view) and that women should be prepared to shag any man, because (underlying this world view) of a tacit belief that women aren't actually sexual at all, they just demonstrate a sort of ersatz sexuality for the benefit of men, and are there as passive recipients (passive, barring the obligatory faked orgasm for the sake of the man's ego) of the men's sexual interest.

It really is a view of human sexuality and behaviour drawn entirely from people whose whole mindset is formed by porn - not just consuming it, but creating it.

"I heard the term 'demisexual' for the first time today. Will they only stop coming up with new words when everyone on the planet had their own unique word to describe their sexual preferences?"

Related:
These terms also show up how male centred it all is.
Descriptors of sexuality seem to take a stereotypical young male sex drive as default and then anyone who does not meet that needs a special word.
So for eg Demisexual "A demisexual is a person who does not experience sexual attraction unless they form a emotional connection. It's more commonly seen in, but by no means confined, to romantic relationships. The term demisexual comes from the orientation being "halfway between" sexual and asexual".
Note this is completely normal. It does not need a special name. Nore that "sexual" assumes "up for fucking anyone who you fancy" ie back to stereotype of sexuality of a young man.
Ditto:- there's one that means "has sexual desire but not all the time, sometimes feels up for it and sometimes not". Again this is completely NORMAL certainly for women and lots of men too. It needs a special term though to differentiate it from defualt >> up for it all the time.

When you start looking at it,it is completely male centric and not just any males but ones who are stereotypical any holes a goal any time anywhere any one type thing.

There is the porn influence here as well, with the idea that perpetually up for it is the norm.

I haveheard that teen girls are adopting these terms as an easy modern way to tell boys to fuck off and stop going on at them. If it works for them fine, it doesn't exactly address the problem though which is boys going on at girls for sex.

MyBeloved · 15/09/2018 16:02

Are you of the string em up variety

No one mentioned executions. But men should never be put in women's prisons. The UN has ruled it's a human rights abuse

Absolutely this! People in possession of a penis should not be in women's only spaces - end of.

(oooh the data's in! We're going to have to create more street theatre aimed at people who are Libra and like coconut....)

Knicknackpaddyflak · 15/09/2018 15:08

When asked on a form for my gender I often want to write 'frostgender demiboi' (that really is a thing....) and see what they do with it.

It's not as if there is a particular kind of provision they're going to whip out for frostgendered people, demiboi or otherwise, or a change to the risk assessment. It's pure posturing. You might as well be asking my colour season, star sign or favourite flavour.

cobwebsinthebelfry · 15/09/2018 14:55

I refuse to use the term 'cis'. It's meaningless when you accept the reality that their are no dog women, cat women, trans women or cis women, only women.

YeTalkShiteHen · 15/09/2018 14:42

No I don’t have to accept it.

Anyone who tells me I do is an arsehole.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 15/09/2018 14:36

JellySlice · 15/09/2018 11:40

Never. I am a woman.

What I have in common with white women, angry women, dead women, Jewish women, disabled women, famous women, Communist women, sterilised women and transmen is our biology. We do not need a label to define our relative biologies.

Transwomen are men. What they gave in common with dh is their biology. They already have a label to define how their biology differs from women's biology.

What transwomen and dh have in common with me is our humanity. Not our sex, not our socially and culturally prescribed gender roles.

If TW are literally women and TG are literally girls as per GG, swim england prison service etc
Then the words "woman" "girl" have no meaning whatsoever.

Not just that, by calling men women we remove all protective legislation involving the word "women", by adding a sub group word such as "cis" we are one tiny step from completely blocking women from recognition in law surely because the next step is logically that when a law is there to protect women and "transwomen" are now the definition of women then that law only protects them and not "cis"women because they now need their own set of laws drawn up.

Can you see the danger of where this is headed?
