Accepting the term 'cis'?

During a debate with a teenage male family member, I was told I had to accept I was a ciswoman, not a woman...whether I liked it or not! I was also told as a ciswoman I had priviages trans mtf could only dream of.

I feel angry. Should I accept this? Or shall I continue standing up for my adult human female rights?!

Ellen7262 "Cis literally just means 'not trans'"

In chemistry.

In the context of gender it means accepting the ideology behind the word. It means nothing outside that ideology.

Trousered · 12/09/2018 19:49

I'm a cis woman = I am a silly person

inquiquotiokixul · 12/09/2018 19:49

'cis' doesn't actually apply to a vast majority of the population. Perhaps a tiny minority, less than 2%: a woman who has been so traumatised by full immersion in a sexist upbringing that she has internalised the misogyny of sexist stereotypes and actually believes and applies that to herself.

The vast majority do not feel the need to subscribe to stereotypes and do not subscribe to a culturally imposed prescription for their personality so are not cis.

Anyone who calls me cis can fuck right off. How dare anyone assume my level of acceptance of gender lies.

Bejazzled · 12/09/2018 19:48

Cis literally just means 'not trans', because whether you like it or not, trans women ARE women

They're not. Whether you like it or not.
And not cis either. I'm just a woman, DNA/biology all in order, as born with, simple stuff.

Ereshkigal · 12/09/2018 19:46

It's like being in an episode of Brass Eye.

Your cisness is in your Shatner's Bassoon. Gendered Intelligence said so.

RedToothBrush · 12/09/2018 19:46

It's funny how it's cis women but never cis men...

Kyanite · 12/09/2018 19:44

You are NOT a sub-category of your own sex!

Absolutely do not let this go. No doubt you would set him right on any other nonsense spoken or disrespectful behaviour from him.

Knicknackpaddyflak · 12/09/2018 19:44

because whether you like it or not, trans women ARE women

No.

Periods and miscarriage, abortion have been described as cis privilege (female).

Not by anyone who's actually had them/been through it, surely!

Just accept the name, it's no big deal. Everything will be fine if you accept your new place in the world. We will all get on so much better with everyone and be nice and happy and butterflies will fill your garden and there will be kittens.

Why do I feel like that would be accompanied by that gentle but firm head stroke you do when trying to put a young child to sleep...

Ellen GrinGrinGrin
Trans women need the definition woman, as in bio woman, otherwise they don't know what they are transing to
Trans women are only women if you are using gender as a descriptor
I prefer a biological definition. It doesn't rely on subjective feelings or stereotypes and if is provable

AspieAndProud · 12/09/2018 19:40

@Ellen7262 women and trans women would do, no need for imposing your descriptors on people who don't identify with them.

This.

If you need a term to distinguish real women from transwomen then 'women' will do.

We have a term for people who collect stamps: stamp collectors.

We don't have a term for people who don't collect stamps. Stamp collectors may but they can keep that to themselves because nobody is interested.

Turph · 12/09/2018 19:39

whether you like it or not, trans women ARE women
Except they are not, and most other people do not they are either. We're all quite happy to play along and treat them as if they were women, but only to a certain degree. I'm not going to call a 6'3" AGP a lesbian because they still fancy women. A trans woman shouldn't be allowed to box against a woman, they would kill her. There are limits. Whether you like it or not.

ToeToToe · 12/09/2018 19:37

"because whether you like it or not, trans women ARE women."

Completely irrelevant what I like or don't like - it is a fact that a woman is an adult human female. Nobody who was born a male can be a woman.

FloralBunting · 12/09/2018 19:37

You don't actually learn what the privileges are until you accept the name. Once you do everything becomes clear. Just accept the name, it's no big deal. Everything will be fine if you accept your new place in the world. We will all get on so much better with everyone and be nice and happy and butterflies will fill your garden and there will be kittens.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 12/09/2018 19:36

Is he "cis"?

NothingOnTellyAgain · 12/09/2018 19:36

Periods and miscarriage, abortion have been described as cis privilege (female).

I havent' heard the term cismen used much tbh.

MyBeloved · 12/09/2018 19:36

I just explained my position strongly. He is an intelligent and compassionate young man who yes, is liberal to the extreme. He was annoyed as he had watched a documentary involving a (as he described her) 'radical feminist' explaining to a mtf trans woman that she had grown up with male privilege and would never understand the world as a girl/woman due to this. What is to deny? It is a fact surely?

CosmicCanary · 12/09/2018 19:35

If they are an adult I would tell them to go fuck themself.

Racecardriver · 12/09/2018 19:35

Why didn't you just tell him you don't believe in gender and ask him to prove that it exists? Also interested about these so called 'privileges'. Last time I checked 'cis' women are disadvantaged by their bodies from birth. It would be nice to be able to procreate without spending a year with a numb brain or you know, risking death. The whole allying into a room and realising that most of the men in it could easily kill/rape you if they were so inclined because you are so much smaller and weaker isn't fun. Or maybe it is the dismissive attitude that health professionals take to sex specific concerns?

InezGraves · 12/09/2018 19:34

There's nothing remotely irrational in being annoyed at someone attempting to label you 'cis'.

And --

Ah, a male telling a female she has to accept a label she rejects. That's not at all authoritarian.

Indeed.

GulagMilkMonitor · 12/09/2018 19:34

I’ll accept cis when they accept pseudo.

BiologyIsReal · 12/09/2018 19:33

The arrogance of it.

Trans women can demand they are called 'she'. TRAs are demanding access to women's spaces, prisons, shelters, sports etc. etc.

We are expected to accept such ludicrous inanity as "assigned a gender", pregnant "person", "persons with a cervix", told off for daring to discuss the biological details real women have in common - periods, miscarriages, childbirth, menopause, etc.

Then the silly twerps get all arsey when we say we are not "cis".

What a load of prats.

Wish to hell they would grow up and act like adults.
