The term "men in dresses"

Trans-excluders like to say that they're absolutely fine with boys who don't fit in with gender stereotypes. And I, not one of you, am fine with children not fitting gender stereotypes. But I don't think that is true of all of you. Why is "man in a dress" used as an insult by so many of you?

What about men wearing dresses while eating breakfast?

NotANotMan · 12/09/2018 10:52

Men wearing non-trousers is completely acceptable in many parts of the world outside the global north west.

Call me an optimist if you like, but I think a ‘men’s red carpet/runway/celebrity fashions combined WITH breakfast foods AND viewed through a feminist lens’ thread is totally do-able.

Datun · 12/09/2018 10:51

I know it's not strictly a dress.

I disagree. Fun though the breakfast posts are- and I have been guilty of asking a poster if they have a cake to decorate myself- I think we are shooting ourselves in the foot when we do it. I think we should ignore or engage. But not derail.

SittingAround1 · 12/09/2018 10:49

BeyondAnOmnishambles I'm aware middle eastern men have a specific word for their garments, which obviously isn't the english word 'dress'. I was merely trying to point out that clothing is cultural and not all cultures have men wearing western style trousers.

If western men wish to break out of the traditional trouser wearing mould and start wearing clothing typically associated with women then I think that's great.

I fully respect whatever anyone wants to wear.

I think the line is crossed when men use traditional women's clothing to claim they ARE women and insist on invading women's protected spaces.

Noqont · 12/09/2018 10:47

Apparently it interferes with their uniform and the signal that they are women.

So they're admitting that they look like men in dresses then and other men can't do it because we won't be able to tell the transwomen from the men. Lol. Funny innit how biological women can wear dresses or trousers and we can still see they are women.

Branleuse · 12/09/2018 10:47

I do agree that there are very few outwardly available ways to express femininity because it IS just a dress code in so many ways to alot of men.

I do love a menswear catwalk show.

HQ should not have deleted the breakfast posts. OP starts a goady thread using the term trans excluders and immediately abandons it.

Posters should therefore be allowed to discuss whatever they like as long as it doesn't breach guidelines until OP deigns to return. IMO.

Flatpackjackie · 12/09/2018 10:46

Why has so much on this thread been deleted? I can't follow it at all!

Bigmamma5764 · 12/09/2018 10:46

bet your kid has problems

Datun · 12/09/2018 10:45

Bert

I've just spent quite few minutes admiring Jaden Smith in his skirts. Honestly, looks good.

BettyDuMonde · 12/09/2018 10:45

I’ve got a massive to do list today but I am really looking forward to the possibility of a nice long GNC men thread on my return.

Can we add some chaps in eyeliner?

Bigmamma5764 · 12/09/2018 10:44

can i speak to the man in charge plz (silly woman)

DixieFlatline · 12/09/2018 10:44

But....... honestly? People really think Bowie looks better in a dress than a suit?

I thought the Bowie dress was a bad choice in terms of length, too. I'd advise a woman of the same stature not to wear that + those boots.

GulagMilkMonitor · 12/09/2018 10:44

Some transactivists are furious when men wear dresses but say they're not trans.

Apparently it interferes with their uniform and the signal that they are women.

FFS? This is maddening.

Datun · 12/09/2018 10:43

Where is the OP?

Because I don't think their opening gambit

"Trans-excluders like to say that they're absolutely fine with boys who don't fit in with gender stereotypes...But I don't think that is true of all of you."

Isn't really holding up.

BertrandRussell · 12/09/2018 10:43

Am I the only person who thinks all the men in the pictures look a bit silly?

Obviously I will defend almost to the death their right to wear dresses. But....... honestly? People really think Bowie looks better in a dress than a suit?

GulagMilkMonitor · 12/09/2018 10:42

Marc Jacob’s panto pirate shoes are a step too far.

Full on Monica from Friends ~1995.

TheMostBeautifulDogInTheWorld · 12/09/2018 10:42

One more man in a dress for the collection: Mick Jagger

DixieFlatline · 12/09/2018 10:42

I just can't get on board with the suit jacket with kilt look. The jacket completely overpowers the kilt and the length is all wrong, but I can't see how making it shorter would be an improvement either. Much prefer the look of the jumper (incl. where it cuts off) in Betty's Vivienne Westwood look. Can Scottish men not just wear very nice jumpers with their kilts, or something?

🤢

Worse than honey in an avocado, I reckon.

Branleuse · 12/09/2018 10:40

Man in a dress isnt an insult anymore than man in a suit is.

Loads of men seem to like to wear these stereotypical feminine clothes. Its pretty common. Its not a problem in my opinion. Completely seperate to what sex they are
