The term "men in dresses"

Trans-excluders like to say that they're absolutely fine with boys who don't fit in with gender stereotypes. And I, not one of you, am fine with children not fitting gender stereotypes. But I don't think that is true of all of you. Why is "man in a dress" used as an insult by so many of you?

I think it is an interesting question (I agree, it is annoying to have wade through the silly breakfast shit to discuss it). I am Scottish so used to men in kilts, but visitors may ask 'is it true men wear skirts in Scotland'? In many cultures men wear sarongs or tunics, so the point is not the garment itself, but the cultural associations. In the west 'skirts' are culturally associated with women, but there is absolutely no practical reason men should not wear them and look good in them.

Some gender non conforming men do wear skirts and dresses and often look great. This is different from men who wear dresses to try to 'pass' as women as they have gender dysphoria. In the latter case, it is cruel, if factually correct, to call them a 'man in a dress'. Kindness in all things is to be encouraged.

The OP uses an expression that no-one else does and their mate doubles down on it and then blames the women who don't use it.

I think the only people ive heard use this phrase this century are my elderly uncle and men in newspaper comments sections.

This. Perhaps people who perpetuate this lie are the cruel ones. I think this is a good subject for discussion. Fully on board with that.

The trouble with perpetuating a lie is that it is out of step with reality. Eventually, there will be a mismatch between reality and the lie and that will mean a further lie is necessary to perpetuate the first lie. This will continue until eventually reality kicks in.........

Isn't this the basis of Farce?

Op, obviously the GC regulars here will say it's factual, but regardless of whether it is or isn't accurate it's the kind of phrase that upsets those affected more than those unaffected could possibly comprehend

Perhaps the OP shouldn't use it then. This is just garden path stuff. The OP uses an expression that no-one else does and their mate doubles down on it and then blames the women who don't use it.

Men should be able to wear dresses if they do choose. There’s lots of men wearing make up, and doing tutorials on YouTube. Men dancing in high heels. Bloody good for them. Love seeing stereotypes challenged. Need to see more of it.

Still men in dresses/make up/high heels. Not appropriating womanhood and claiming to be a woman.

My Ds used to love wearing dresses. That’s all it was: wearing a dress.

Stop turning it into a drama and get on with it.

Dragoncake · 12/09/2018 09:07

A man wearing a dress is nowhere near noteworthy. Until the man claims that wearing a dress somehow makes him a woman. Which is sexism, in old money.

'Men' for male people is also perfectly acceptable. Dresses or not.

LangCleg · 12/09/2018 09:05

I'm a woman in trousers. Men's trousers too, since they have pockets and I don't have much of a waist.

I regard "I identify as..." as a bourgeois means of appropriating oppression from actually oppressed groups.

There! A Rat friendly post. No need for all that hangriness.

Oh, sod that. WEETABIX!

calpop · 12/09/2018 09:04

I doubt anybody here has a problem with men wearing dresses, kilts, tutus etc, I certainly don't, or womem wearing trousers or shorts. Men wearing dresses and saying that makes them the same as, if not better than women is what GC people have an issue with i.e TRAs. Men in dresses is a factual description not an insult.

What are you reporting people for? Literal breakfast violence? I don't see how talking about what you're having for breakfast breaks any guidelines. Im about to have toast and a hot chocolate!

howlsmovingcastle84 · 12/09/2018 09:04

I'm wearing a dress today. the description "woman in a dress" would therefore be correct. If I was man the description "man in a dress" would be correct. Neither is an insult.

You’re all weird liking 🥑 It makes me rethink if you are right about other things and if I should’ve been listening to you all these years Grin

Datun · 12/09/2018 09:02

Is the OP coming back?

I feel I should point out that we are not draft excluders at all, since we include transmen.

And the assertion that 'so many' on here insult people by saying men in dresses is wrong. It's not an expression that is often used here.

Perhaps if men in dresses hadn't been lied to, their expectations of everyone having to continue to lie to them wouldn't be quite so devastating.

This. Perhaps people who perpetuate this lie are the cruel ones. I think this is a good subject for discussion. Fully on board with that.

Much like TWAW impacts women.
